It was an absolute pleasure to welcome Jackie Rosario Diversity & Inclusion Coordinator and Stuart Murphy President of the Red Tag Fly Fishers to the JOY Sport Studio to share the joys of fly fishing! Catch a rainbow and head along to their Come and Try day on Saturday 17 May at Yarra Bend to recognise IDAHOBIT day – International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia! The event is free, it’s fun and it’s a welcoming introduction to the world of fly fishing, with hands-on activities like casting, fly tying, and checking out all the gear. There’ll be prizes, giveaways and a light lunch too! Give it a go – you might get hooked! (Starts 1min 50secs)
IDAHOBIT Day is such a important day – a day dedicated to raising awareness and taking action against discrimination and violence experienced by the LGBTQIA+ community. The date marks the anniversary of the World Health Organization’s decision in 1990 to remove homosexuality from its list of mental disorders.
We talk pride in netball with David Capron – a nonbinary netball player who was featured on the front page of the Herald Sun on ANZAC Day with the headline Netbrawl. David enacted the Netball Victoria community sport policy and has played for both the men’s and women’s teams causing a kerfuffle. We delve into how participation in sport is evolving and changing. We are joined by Paul Heptonstall, General Manager Wellbeing and Education of the NRL and the Rugby League Players Association who took out the Ally of the Year Award at the 2025 Pride in Sport awards! Paul outlines inclusion initiatives in rugby league, the locker room as a safe space for players to be their authentic self, and the journey to achieving the commitment of the code to welcoming everyone regardless of race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or any other characteristic. We talk Pride in Fencing with Avery Holderness-Roddam, Participation Manager – The Australian Fencing Federation. Newly appointed Avery shares his journey in fencing as a trans man and encourages us to head along to an inclusive event on this Saturday – Come Out and Fence: Intro to Fencing for LGBTQI+ People – at the State Fencing Centre in North Melbourne from 3.00-5.30pm. Welcome to Game On JOY 94.9’s Home of Sport every Wednesday from 6-7pm where you’ll hear where you can get your game on! This show is all about showcasing where sport is safe, inclusive, welcoming and fun for the Rainbow community!
On the show we speak with Pride In Sport award nominee – Ben Dew, Inclusion, Equity and Diversity Pathways and Events Specialist with Tennis Australia who is in the LGBTQ+ Ally of the Year Awards category about inclusion in tennis. Ben talks us through where Tennis Australia has demonstrated sustainable committed to increasing opportunities and accessibility to tennis for LGBTQ+ people.
And after 6,30 we replay an interview on an earlier show with Zander Murray, the first male Scottish senior player to come out as gay. Zander shares his struggle with his sexuality and hiding his authentic self at the same time as forging a career as a professional footballer and being a top goal scorer. If you are ever in Scotland, you can check out his jersey which he wore when he came out – it’s now proudly on display as an artefact in the Scottish Football Museum. It’s there so that school kids visiting can see that today there is a place for the LGBTIQA+ community to be out, loud and proud in elite male sport!
We also hear from Keir Ford, Committee member Emerald City Kickball and James Goldsworthy aka The Silver Stone about why you should join the Kickballers every Sunday afternoon for a kick in the park with friends!

Chris Wells, President of the Melbourne Rovers, an inclusive soccer club shares exciting news about the Club’s involvement with A-Leagues club Melbourne Victory as part of the annual Pride Cup now in its third consecutive year. Melbourne Victory is a club for everyone who calls Melbourne home no matter your sexual orientation, gender, ability, or faith – the game of football should be a place where everyone is celebrated and feels included. That’s the message behind the Pride Cup as part of the league wide Pride Celebration. Ally David Keogh, Diversity and Inclusion Officer with the Collaroy Tennis Club on the Northern Beaches shares the exciting details of their awesome free community event promoting inclusivity, celebrating diversity and encouraging LGBTQ+ participation in sports on this Saturday – a tennis event with a carnival atmosphere! The Club has been awarded a grant to participate in the inaugural Australian Pride in Sport Festival. This will be a fantastic Twilight Event, held at the Club from 4pm on Saturday March 22, organised together with Fusion Pride Northern Beaches. Tanya Hosch, AFL’s Executive General Manager of Inclusion and Social Policy joined the show to share a fantastic initiative in sport and the AFL – a dedicated LGBTQIA+ education module aimed at targeting homophobia in the sport. The module must be completed by all 787 players and 3232 officials before the start of the AFL season with all AFLW players also included for the start of their season later this year. It’s fantastic that the AFL continues to advocate for the LGBTIQA+ community to be welcome in our national game on and off the field while sending the strong message that homophobic language is not welcome in sport. The Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Steve Dimopoulos jumped on the line to talk sport across Victoria and the excitement of the National Football League (NFL) regular season game coming to the MCG as part of a multi-year commitment from spring 2026!
