It was fantastic to welcome to the JOY 93.9 Sport Studio Angie Greene CEO Stand Up Events and Tom Campbell, AFL Player with the Melbourne Football Club who have been creating safe and inclusive environments in sport for everyone, regardless of sexuality or gender. The main goal of Stand Up is to implement their customised preventive programs into sporting clubs, in an attempt to eradicate homophobic language and behaviour developed from the results of world first research from Monash University. We also explore the AFL as a safe space for athletes to be their authentic self and the barriers. And if you are interested in the contribution of Don Dunstan former Labor Premier of South Australia head along to An Audience with Don which explores his political life and the battles he so proudly fought such as LGBTIQA+ rights, racism, Indigenous rights, and electoral reform. Mardi Gras is here for the 47th year! All the action starts on Friday 14th February! Penny Gulliver, 78er who is the Chief instructor at the Gay & Lesbian Martial Arts Newtown, is a 6th Dan Black Belt and is the Tournament Director of Mardi Gras Martial Arts Championships! Andrew Wilmot President Freezone Volleyball – Sydney’s LGBTIQA+ friendly volleyball club joins the show to tell us all about it and how we can get involve in the Mardi Gras Volleyball Tournament 2025 on February 22 and 23, 2025 at Perry Park Recreation Centre. The NBL Champion Pride Round was held for the third year over the past two weeks. The aim of the round was to let everyone know that basketball a safe, welcoming, and inclusive space where the LGBTIQA+ belongs. Melbourne United held their Pride Night at John Cain Area and JOY 94.9 was there – we had an outside broadcast for 2hr before the game that was a lot of fun and Alyssia Algeri was also there having won the double pass to the game! Alysia was a guest in the JOY 94.9 Sport Studio to tell us all about her night! (Starts 3;00minutes)
Beau Newell, National Program Manager Pride in Sport tells us about a fantastic first – the inaugural Australian Pride in Sport Festival running from February to April with a Calendar of Sporting Events, he talks us through the Diversity Equity and Inclusion direction in the USA and what that means in Australia, and reminds us to get our nominations in for the annual Pride in Sport Awards that close on 10 February!(Starts 15:37minutes)

On the show this week we are joined by Dean Vickerman Coach Melbourne United in the JOY 94.9 Studio to talk basketball, pride and living your authentic life in sport. The Melbourne United Basketball Club is committed to being the most inclusive sporting organisation in Australia! The annual Melbourne United Pride Round game as part of the NBL Pride Round is now in its third year taking place on Saturday, February 1. Dean was instrumental in the instigation of the pride round and talks about his support of Isaac Humphries who he was coaching at the time. Make sure to head to John Cain Area for an extra special outside broadcast on the day from 6-8pm before tip off! It will be a high energy packed event with a host of notable notables to be confirmed as well as an appearance by the Melbourne Spectres – Melbourne’s very own LGBTIQA+ Basketball Club! (Starts 2:24)
Professional Aussie cricketer Andrew Tye AJ joins the show from 6:30pm to talk about the Perth Scorchers’ annual Pride game and being an awesome Ally. AJ has a unique way of showing he is an ally at every match not only the Pride match! Perth Scorchers BBL|14 Pride Match will take place in the Club’s final home fixture against Adelaide Strikers at Optus Stadium on Saturday 18 January.
And this year the Perth Scorchers are proud to stand alongside Perth Wildcats in a show of both Club’s commitment to diversity and inclusivity in sport! Perth Wildcats Pride Game is on Friday 31 January against South East Melbourne Phoenix at RAC Arena, as part of the NBL’s third annual Pride Round celebrating inclusion and diversity. (Starts 23:14)
And Kade Matthews from Proud2Play shares more sporting events for your diary including this Sunday’s Midsumma Sports Precinct as part of the Midsumma Carnival. Sunday 19th January will be the place to be at the Alexandra Gardens beside the Yarra River in magnificent Melbourne. The Glam Slam is an international tennis event sanctioned by the Gay Lesbian Tennis Alliance (GLTA) and held in Melbourne during the Australian Open as an opportunity for participants who identify as LGBTQ+ to participate at competitive and social competitions. This year thirty four countries are represented from the 24 – 26 January. The film explores Jelena Dokic’s refugee experience, rise to world No 4 in tennis, and her tumultuous relationship with her abusive father Damir Dokic. We hear from Director and writer Ivan O’Mahoney, In Films about the making of this powerful film which carries the message that there is away out of domestic violence and that by speaking up and having the conversation this can challenge stigma, shame and judgement.
