During the mid-1930s, the British and overseas newspapers were filled with extraordinary tales of Gef, a creature referred to as a "talking mongoose" or "man-weasel," which was said to have appeared in the home of the Irvings, a farming family residing in a remote area of the Isle of Man.According to reports, the creature was capable of speaking in various languages, singing, stealing objects from nearby farms, and eavesdropping on local individuals.Despite the presence of written reports, magazine articles, books, several photographs, fur samples, paw prints, extensive correspondence, and eyewitness accounts, there is still no real agreement on what precisely happened to the Irving family.Was it a hoax?An extreme case of shared psychosis?A poltergeist? This place was designed to house only 29 prisoners at a time, from poor debtors to execution victims.Between 1730 – 1832 in excess of 222 crimes carried the death penalty - 56 prisoners met their end at Derby Gaol where their hangings were spectacles witnessed by crowds of people waiting in eager anticipation.Terror, torture and death, you could be murdered for the coat off your back!This prison sits under a normal housing estate. I wonder if the neighbours have any stories to tell?Would you get a whipping?A branding?
