True Hauntings Case 121: The Church of Bones Sedlec Ossuary Czech Republic - A place where death is around every corner
The Church of Bones | Sedlec Ossuary
“The house smelled musty and damp — and a little sweet, as if it were haunted by the ghosts of long-dead cookies.”
So… what kind of place smells like dead cookies?
Welcome to the Sedlec Ossuary — better known as The Church of Bones.
From the outside, this small Gothic church near the picturesque Czech city of Kutná Hora looks unassuming, even quaint. But descend into the basement and you’ll find something profoundly unsettling.
Chandeliers made entirely of human bones.
Towering bone pyramids.
Skulls marked with bullet holes.
This is not a set piece.
This is not folklore.
This is real.
The bones of tens of thousands of people were exhumed, bleached, carved, and arranged into ornate — and deeply macabre — works of art that now coat the walls, ceilings, and altars of this underground chapel.
Why were they placed here?
Who decided this was sacred art rather than sacrilege?
And does a space built from the dead ever truly rest?
In this episode of True Hauntings, Anne and Renata explore the history, legends, and chilling atmosphere of one of the most disturbing religious sites on Earth — a place where mortality is impossible to ignore, and the dead quite literally surround you.
