From the outside, this small Gothic church near the picturesque Czech city of Kutná Hora looks unassuming, even quaint. But descend into the basement and you’ll find something profoundly unsettling.

Chandeliers made entirely of human bones.

Towering bone pyramids.

Skulls marked with bullet holes.

This is not a set piece.

This is not folklore.

This is real.

The bones of tens of thousands of people were exhumed, bleached, carved, and arranged into ornate — and deeply macabre — works of art that now coat the walls, ceilings, and altars of this underground chapel.
