Growing Relationships With Graham Solomon – PTC 378

There are many strategies to monetize your podcast. Using your podcast to grow relationships is one of those strategies. It is also one that is often overlooked. Hearing your voice on the podcast allows your listener to form a strong relationship with you. There is just something about the spoken word that sparks the imagination. However, you can also use your podcast to build relationships in other ways. Before we jump into relationships, let's talk audience growth. RELATIONSHIPS Let's talk about using your podcast to build profitable relationships. There are four types of relationships you can grow with your show. First, you can develop relationships with your listeners. When you build these relationships, you can lead your listener to a discovery call or strategy session. Next, you can develop relationships with your guests and turn them into clients. Rather than worrying about a big audience, use your podcast to open doors to prospects. It is much easier to invite a prospect to be a guest on your podcast than it is to get them to take your cold sales call. Let the interview lead to conversation and relationship. Once you build the trust, you can discuss working together. You can also develop relationships with potential JV partners by featuring them on your podcast. Your podcast is your stage. Invite partners to have access to your audience. Finally, you can build relationships with other podcasters to help you get more exposure. An interview swap is a great way to get in front of more potential listeners. Helping Chris Lewis Grow Dads With Daughters Podcast – PTC 377

On the podcast today, we help Chris Lewis grow the audience and impact of his Dads with Daughters podcast. Chris has been in podcasting for years. He has produced this particular show since 2020. It has hit that growth plateau so many of us face in our journey. Link to Dads With Daughters Podcast: https://www.fatheringtogether.org/dads-with-daughters-podcast/ Link to the Fatherhood Insider: bit.ly/fatherhoodinsider GROWTH EQUATION As we have discussed in the past, there are two sides to the growth equation. First, you need to talk to current listeners and get them to actually listen to the show. If your current listeners aren't coming back, you won't grow regardless of the number of new listeners you attract. Second, you need to attract new listeners. How are you getting in front of your new potential listeners and inviting them to the show? STRATEGY As you create your growth and monetization strategy, begin with the end in mind. Who do you want to attract to the show? What do you want your listner to do when the episode ends. And ultimately, where do you want listeners to end up on their journey with you? If you are looking to monetize your show, this last question typically ends with becoming a client. ACCELERATOR Developing and following a strategy is difficult to accomplish alone. How long have you been trying to figure this out on your own? When you get a collective group together who are all trying to accomplish the same thing, the transformation is amazing. The things accomplished are phenomenal. One plus one ends up equalling three through the power of collaboration. That is why I started the Podcast Profits Accelerator. It is a group of podcasters coming together to help and support each other to achieve growth and monetization together. Napoleon Hill, author of "Think and Grow Rich", calls it the Mastermind Principle. Hill describes the Mastermind Principle as "The coordination of knowledge and effort between two or more people who work towards a definite purpose in a spirit of harmony … no two minds ever come together without thereby creating a third, invisible intangible force, which may be likened to a third mind". He calls this the Mastermind. The Podcast Profits Accelerator is just that. It is a group of people coming together working toward a definite purpose. Chris is the father of 2 daughters that are now in their tweens and teens. He started Dad of Divas as a blog to share his own personal experiences as a father in 2007. In 2018, Chris launched the Dads With Daughters Facebook Group. The Dads With Daughters podcast has now been publishing since early 2020 with over 100 episodes. We Have Cohosts With Different Goals – PTC 376

Today, we are going to answer listener questions. These include cohosts with different goals, a podcaster who wants to pivot, recording remote interviews and more. We will hit as many as we can in the next 30 minutes. I would love to answer your questions. You have two options. If you would like a free coaching call with me, we will record that call and use it as an episode. Not only will you get coaching with me, you'll get great exposure on this podcast. You can apply for that opportunity on the Podcast Talent Coach website at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/apply. Or, you can simply send me a question in audio form. I'll play it here and answer your question. Much shorter and easier. However, you don't get to ask your questions and get some coaching. Record your question and email it to me at coach@podcasttalentcoach.com. Either way, I would love to help you overcome your struggles and move forward. Take advantage of either of these opportunities. I can't guarantee everyone gets in. There is only so much room on the show. Get in while you can. MORE PODCASTS Mark asks, "Is there room for more podcasts? I want to create a podcast that helps men on their spiritual walk. This will tie in with the mastermind I am building. There are so many podcasts out there about life coaching and men's groups. Is there room for more?" There is absolutely room for more podcasts. There are 600 million blogs. 37 million YouTube channels exist. There are just over 2 million podcasts. There is plenty of room. More important than that, people enjoy different styles. Consider all of the money podcasts available. You can listen to the Ramsey Show with Dave Ramsey. Ramit Sethi hosts I Will Teach You To Be Rich. NPR offers Planet Money. You can check out The Stacking Benjamins Show with Joe Saul-Sehy. Each of these shows has its own personality, style and approach. RAMSEY Dave Ramsey on The Ramsey Show gives you tough love to get you to your financial goals. Dave was a real estate agent and investor from a young age. He went through bankruptcy and then build a multi-million dollar business helping people get out of debt. He has been there and done that. The podcast is a replay of Dave's radio show where he takes calls from listeners and answers their questions. SETHI On I Will Teach You To Be Rich, Ramit sits down with couples who share real money problems and real numbers. It is a coaching session. Ramit tells it like it is. He takes a different approach than most experts. It is 100% bootstrapped and 100% remote. He started his website in 2004 while studying technology and psychology at Stanford. He came from a middle-class family. The only way he could afford college was to pay his own way. He believes you should buy all the lattes you want while getting out of debt. Much difference approach than Dave. NPR Planet Money from NPR is a typical NPR show in that National Public Radio style. Imagine you could call up a friend and say, "Meet me at the bar and tell me what's going on with the economy." Planet Money wants to create that discussion in a fun way. SAUL-SEHY The Stacking Benjamins Show episodes are actually introduced by Joe's mom. No big voice guy. That is the style of the show. They have a bunch of fun. Joe is a former financial advisor and represented American Express and Ameriprise in the media. He was the "Money Man" on Detroit television. The podcast features various co-hosts and a lively discussion. All four shows talk about money and getting out of debt. However, they all have a different style and approach. Some listeners are attracted to Remit's syle. Others enjoy Joe's style. Anyone can copy your information. Your style and personality will set you apart. To ensure there is room for your podcast, be unique by being yourself. PIVOT Raven says, "I am a painter and have a podcast that has been a book club to this point. However, I want to pivot to discuss about race relations in the U.S. It ties in with my artwork in a better way. How can I connect the podcast to selling my artwork?" The good news is that it is your show. You can pivot anytime you'd like. The question becomes how to connect the content to clients. The answer is to start with the end in mind. What do you want your listener to do when the show is over? If it is to purchase your artwork, let's figure out how to get them there. How do people purchase your art? This could be online, during a one-on-one meeting, at an art show or maybe during an auction. Let's say you sell your artwork on your website. Why would listeners come to your website other than buying art? You could create a quick "how to" guide that teaches people how to evaluate and buy art. Give this away on your website as a lead magnet to get their name and email address. Your email list is now being filled with people interested in buying art. By building your email list, you can then let listeners know when you have new artwork for sale. Now, how do we create great content that attracts art buyers so we can send them to our lead magnet? You can interview other artists in your niche. Your content could teach listeners how to evaluate and buy art. Share with your listeners where to find art. On the show, create content that talks about the why and stirs emotion. Get them excited about buying artwork. Then, send them to your site. COHOSTS Jason wants to know how to promote his business when the cohosts have different businesses. He says, "My cohost and I do a podcast that helps leaders lead from a point of service. We highlight business leaders on the show. I offer leadership coaching, but my cohost isn't part of that business. He has a business of his own outside of this niche. We have no lead magnet, because we can't figure out how to make it fair. How can I promote my business in an equal way when he has nothing to promote?" Many friends get together to start a podcast talking about their passion. After the show is up and running, they start to wonder how to monetize. It is a challenge with cohosts have different businesses. With this case Jason, just create an agreement where you can promote your business on the show and your cohost can benefit from it as well. Your cohost would be similar to an affiliate. Let's say you offer leadership coaching on a monthly basis. Your clients pay you every month to coach them. Create a deal with your cohost that pays him each time you land a client through the show. Send your listeners to a dedicated sales page that is only promoted on the show. When a client purchases coaching through that page, your cohost gets paid. You would then have another sales page to gain clients through your other methods separate from the podcast. Your cohost wouldn't get paid for any sales through this other page. REMOTE INTERVIEWS Let's get one more quick one in here. Kelly asks, "What is the best way to record an interview when the two people are in different locations? How do we connect? What is the best way to get good sound quality? How do I edit the episode?" I use Zoom. Some podcast experts are audio snobs and want to create CD and wave quality audio. Flawless audio as if it were recording in a professional studio. I'm all about creating good audio quality. But, you also need to keep in mind that your listener is listening to your show through cheap earbuds while they are working out at the gym. Your audio doesn't need to be pure. Russel Brunson will often record his show while driving to work. Gary Vaynerchuk's episodes are sometimes recorded in the back of an Uber. Your guest doesn't usually have a high quality mic. So, don't worry so much about the recording platform. Zoom provides decent audio that is good enough for a podcast. It will record both a video file and an audio file. In your audio editing software like Audacity or Hindenburg, record your show intro and the show close with your call-to-action. Drag the Zoom audio file into the session. Edit it together and export it. Don't make it harder than it needs to be. If you would like help editing your show, visit www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/editing. You can see some options there. People come to your show for great content, not great audio. Nobody says, "I love that podcast, because the audio is flawless. The content is pretty average, but the sound quality rivals any album I've every heard." Spend more time creating great content rather than worrying about your audio quality. YOUR QUESTIONS If you would like a free coaching call with me, so we can record it and use it as an episode, apply at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/apply. Or, you can simply send me a question in audio form. Record your question and email it to me at coach@podcasttalentcoach.com.

Make Your Podcast A Habit – PTC 375

People are creatures of habit. If you can make your podcast a habit for your listeners, you have the potential to see real growth in your downloads. You can then leverage that attention to grow your business and generate more revenue. YOUR QUESTIONS Before we get started, I would love to answer your questions. You have two ways to get your questions answered here on the show. If you would like a free coaching call with me right here on the podcast, you can I can have a call that we will record to use it as an episode. However, you don't get to ask your questions or get the coaching. If you would prefer that method, record your question and email it to me atcoach@podcasttalentcoach.com. HABIT Let's talk about making your podcast a habit for your listener. In radio, listeners would tell us they spend every morning with our morning show. It was part of their morning routine. I started in radio in 1988. Rough math, I've done a little over 33,000 hours of radio. In that time, I've learned what drives listening. I've learned by trial & error, by attending conferences and by receiving coaching from some of the best in the business. Let me share a little of that with you. On a morning show, you will hear segments internally called benchmarks. These are content elements that happen at the same time everyday. That's how they get the name benchmark. Some shows would air news right at the top of the hour. You might hear the contest at 7:20. On our country station, the show would do Joke of the Day every morning at 7:50. When we were out at appearances, we would have listeners come up to us and explain how they listened everyday and describe what they love about the station. One day, a lady was explaining how she and her kids listened every morning on the way to school. This wasn't uncommon. What she said next really opened our eyes. She told us that she and her kids loved the show and always played along with the games. Then she said, "We know if we get to the stop sign coming out of our neighborhood before Joke of the Day comes on, we know we will be to school on time." That family listens everyday, because that Joke of the Day benchmark has become part of their lives. The show has become a habit. How can you turn your show into a habit, so your listener listens every week on the way to church or every week while they are cleaning the house? There are 7 things you can do to become part of your listener's life. FAST ATTENTION First, grab the attention of your listener right at the start of the show. Many podcasters like to start with a cold open. This is where the content begins before the standard show intro. The host gives a little content prior to the prerecorded show open kicks in. A cold open can be a powerful way to get your listener right into the content. But, you need to use it properly. There are two mistakes many podcasters make when using a cold open. The first mistake with cold opens is the length. If the length of your cold open is too long, new listeners will be lost. Listeners who haven't consumed your podcast for awhile may not remember why they are here. A cold open should pique the interest of your listener. The purpose of the cold open is to hook the listener and get them to stay for the entire episode. The other mistake podcasters make with the cold open is forgetting the new listener. Many cold opens are not structured to be inviting. There are terms or comments that regular listeners may understand, but new listener don't get at all. When this happens, you run the risk of turning off new listeners. They may feel lost. If that happens, your new listener is leaving. Instead, make the cold open brief and compelling. Open the loop and get your listener to stick around to close it. BE REAL The next way to become part of your listener's life is to be real. By being authentic, you begin to form a relationship with your listener. People listen to podcasts for companionship. They want you to keep them company while they are doing other things, like exercising or driving. If you are slick or salesy, you'll turn off the listener. When you are real, you create true connections. Share a bit of your life. Connect by being authentic. STORY The next way is to connect through story. If you want to create meaningful friendships with your listener, tell stories. Friendships are developed through self revelation. The more you reveal about yourself through your stories, the stronger the connection becomes. Your stories tell your listeners what you value and believe. When you share details in your stories, your listener learns how you operate and how you treat people. The listener decides if they like and trust you. Friendships help encourage your listener to spend time with you every week. Your stories develop friendships and help make your podcast a habit. EVOKE EMOTION You podcast also becomes habit when you evoke emotion in your listener. Emotion is powerful. Sharing facts and information is bland. People can find information anywhere. When you stir emotion, your listener truly become involved. Emotion makes your listener care. When they care, they come back time and time again. SHAREABLE Habit can also created by making your podcast sharable. Encourage your listener to share you podcast with others. When your listener is telling others about your show, they want to listen more to stay congruent. People do not want to say one thing and do another. Psychologically, they want to be congruent by doing what they say. Therefore when you listener tells others about listening to your show, they feel the need to listen themselves. Get listeners to share. BENEFIT Sharing brings us to the next key and that is the benefit. Provide a benefit for the listener. If listeners are going to share the show, a why needs to exist. Your listener will rarely share the show just because it has good content. You need to include a benefit. How is your listener different when the show is over? Your listener will share a benefit more than information. They may say, "If you want to build a sales funnel, you should listen to this show." They will be much more likely to say, "If you want to double your revenue, you need to listen to this show." How to build a funnel is information. Doubling your revenue is a benefit. Be sure you make your benefit clear. The benefit of this episode is growing your audience, so you can leverage the attention to grow your business. It is not about creating better content. WEBSITE Finally, make it easy to subscribe to your podcast. Put the platform badges on your website. These badges are the little icons to the podcast players like Apple Podcasts. When you have the links on your website, listeners can easily click and subscribe. When they subscribe, they are reminded of new episodes by the platform. These badges should link to Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Google Podcasts. Those are the big three. You can then include others you are on such as Audible, Stitcher, TuneIn, iHeartRadio or any of the others. START WITH CONTENT Start this week with your content. As you prepare for the podcast, ask yourself how you might refine the content to begin creating habit with your listener. Where might you tell a story? How can you stir emotion? Are you making the benefit of the episode clear? Start there. Before you know it, you will be a habit for your listener and part of their weekly routine. If you don't have a mentor who can take your hand and walk you every step of the way, go to www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/apply, click the button and apply to have a chat with me. We will develop your plan and see how I can help and support you to achieve your podcast goals.

Find Time For Your Podcast – PTC 372

When you are an entrepreneur, you have many responsibilities and demands of your time. How do you find time each week to create a podcast? Planning and scheduling is critical to keep all of your plates in the air. To find time to produce an episode each week, you need to be organized and follow your calendar. There are three tips you can use to make your week more efficient. PERFECTION First, stop trying to be perfect. Get the best show produced in the given amount of time you have allotted to the podcast. If you only have 3 hours a week to produce your show, make it fit into three hours. Stop trying to edit out every "um" and stumble. Perfection is the enemy of done. Shipped is better than perfect. Get it recorded and get it out to the world. FIND TIME OR MONEY There is a saying that goes, "You can spend time or you can spend money." If you have more time than money, by all means figure out how to do it yourself. Go learn how to do it and save the money. However, if you can spend the time making more money than you would spend hiring someone to do the task for you, hire it out and go sell something. Let's say it takes you three hours to produce and publish your show after you record it. In that same three hours, you could conduct two discovery calls and land one client. If it costs you $100 to hire a producer for your podcast episode and the client brings in $500, stop spending time producing. Hire it out and use your time creating revenue. HONOR THE SCHEDULE Finally to find time to produce your show, you need to honor the schedule. Budget your time just like you would budget your money. There are only so many hours in the week. Be deliberate as you decide how to spend those hours. Schedule the week before it begins. Then, honor the schedule. It won't be perfect when you first start out. You will find things pop up at the last minute. You will need to decide how important those things really are. As you get better at budgeting the time, you will start to build in time for life to happen and things to pop up. But you won't get better unless you start. PANDEMIC The pandemic hit right as Robin Fejes was considering a podcast launch. We talk to her today to lay out a launch plan. How can she find time in the week? Where can she get tech help? How can she use her podcast to drive her non-profit? Enjoy the conversation. FIND TIME FOR COACHING Big thanks to Robin Fejes for joining us on the show today. I hope you gained a few nuggets from our conversation that will help you find time for your podcast this week. If you don't have a mentor who can take your hand and walk you every step of the way, go to www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/apply, click the button and apply to have a chat with me. We will develop your plan and see how I can help and support you to achieve your podcast goals.

Building Your Podcast Strategy – PTC 371

How do you decide if a podcast is right for your business? That is what we answer today for Nikki Brown. You need to define the strategy first to determine if a podcast makes sense for your business. Find Nikki at CoachNikkiB.com. Begin with the end in mind. Then, determine how you get your clients to that point. There is a process a person experiences in their journey to become your client or customer. She discovers you, gets to know who you are and what you're all about, understands what you offer, realizes that solution is for her and decides to buy. To create a client, you need to build rapport, qualify her to ensure your solution is the right solution, education her on your solution and sign her up. It is a simple, focused sales strategy. In that strategy, where does your podcast fit? Your content allows you to share your stories and build rapport. The podcast also allows you to demonstrate your solution. YOUR STRATEGY As you build your strategy to attract clients, start with the end in mind. Where do you eventually want to lead your listeners? You may be trying to attract clients to your one-on-one coaching. Your strategy could be getting listeners to buy your books or become a customer of your company. If you are interviewing guests on your podcast, create a format that allows you to share a bit of your expertise. During the interview, share a bit of your personality. Let your listener get to know you as you have your conversation. Your content is all designed to build a relationship with your listener. When you are on the radio, one of the worst things that can happen is losing your voice. The second worst is getting the hiccups. One day on the radio I opened the mic to start my show and suddenly got the hiccups. I laughed a bit and said, "Well, this is gonna be a long show." Luckily, the hiccups went away quickly. Two days later, I ran into two ladies who listened that day. They told me how much they had laughed when they heard me get the hiccups. People come to your show for your powerful content. They stay for your amazing stories and personality. Share yourself with your audience and build relationships. MONETIZATION STRATEGY Today, we are going to help Nikki Brown determine if a podcast is right for her strategy. Before we get into the conversation, I want to invite you to a powerful event where I will help you build your podcast monetization strategy. We actually get stuff done in this day-long bootcamp. So many times, we go to webinars hoping to learn something only to find out it is full of fluff. This event is where we build your plan. You now have a chance to join me for a 7-hour Podcast Profits Bootcamp where I will take you through the entire process and build your podcast monetization strategy. During this event, you will discover 6 ways to monetize your show. We will then select the one strategy that is perfect for you. This isn't one size fits all. It is specific to your podcast. You can enroll at www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/bootcamp. You will also get a workbook that will help you stay on track as we develop your strategy. During the bootcamp, we walk through the workbook step-by-step. HOW IT WORKS We will start with your foundation to ensure you are building on solid ground. Then, we will develop your purpose. I'll show you why most podcasts don't make money, so you can avoid those pitfalls. Many people think ads and sponsorships are the way to make money with your show. That is a myth. I won't just show you, we will build it together. We will discuss the various ways you can monetize your show, and we will pick the strategy that is right for you. Finally, you will have plenty of time to ask me questions to refine your strategy. This is so much more than a webinar or workshop. It is a bootcamp where we will actually get things done. Where most webinars last an hour, this is an all day event. It all happens on Thursday, February 10th. REGISTER You can save if you register before the end of January. Helping Karen Robinson With Her Podcast Process – PTC 369

Budgeting your money helps you determine where to spend it. The same is true with your time. If you find that your podcast process is eating a lot of your week, budget your time and allocate it efficiently. There are three things you can do to improve your podcast process. I want to help you with that today. Then, we will talk with Karen Robinson of the Heal Thrive Dream podcast and help her refine her process to grow her impact and business. Before we start, there are two events coming up that can help you with your podcast. If you have not launched your podcast yet, join us for "How To Launch Your Podcast In 30 Days". It is a free training that happens on Monday, January 17th. Get the details HERE. If you have a podcast and would like to grow your engagement and convert your listeners into buyers, join us for the Podcast Profits Bootcamp. It is a full-day event where we work together to build your strategy. You can get those full details HERE. BATCHING Batching your content is one way to spend your time efficiently. It helps you maximize efficiencies of scale. When we talk about batching your content, we are talking about setting up your gear and preparing once. Then, record multiple episodes in the same sitting. You will save time by batching in 3 different ways. SET UP First, you only need to set up the gear once. Even if you leave your studio in tact, it still takes time to power up the equipment, turn on the lights, set the mic levels, gather your show prep, grab your water and all of the other little things that go into getting ready to record. You then need to clean it all up at the end. Let's say set up and tear down takes you 20 minutes. If you do it once and record 3 episodes during the same sitting, you spend 20 minutes. When you record three episodes at three different times, you spend 60 minutes setting up and tearing down. You save 40 minutes batching. THE ZONE Next, you benefit by being in the zone. When you start recording, your mind gets in that creative mode. You get warmed up, and the content starts to roll. This makes it easier to create your shows. THE THREAD Finally, your content has a flow to it. One episode starts to connect with the next. There is a thread that ties it all together. As you record mulitple episodes in the same sitting, you remember what you discussed in the last episode. You begin referring to that conent and it connects your episode and content. Rather than having multiple isolated episodes, your begin to develop a storyline and theme through your shows. This encourages listeners to go consume previous shows. It also allows you to properly tease upcoming episodes. SCHEDULING The second thing you can do to improve your podcast process is schedule your week. Remember when you were in college? When you had three weeks to write a paper, it took three weeks including a couple all-nighters. When you had three days to write the same paper, it took three days. When you move to a bigger house, your junk just expands to fill the house. Your podcast will take as long as you give it. It is similar to all of the work you would get done in the day or two before you left for vacation. Deadlines have a tendency to make us very productive. Schedule a specific amount of time to get the show produced. Then, honor the schedule. Focus on the work and get it knocked out. EFFECTIVE Finally the third thing you can do to improve your podcast process is to spend time on those things that move the needle. There are specific tasks that you can do each week that produce the show, promote your podcast and build your audience. Spend time there. Will removing every "um" from your show grow your audience or get your show produced faster? Nope. It just eats time. Will researching a few important pieces of information help your show? Sure. It makes your content stronger and builds your authority. However, a little goes a long way. Don't spend 4 hours doing research. Find a few important pieces of data that supports your point and roll with it. Do you really benefit by spending 30 minutes processing your audio and making it sound perfect? Nobody comes to your podcast because your audio is flawless. They come because you have great content. Spend time on things that make an impact. If you would like to have my team edit your podcast for you to allow you more time for the things that matter, get editing details HERE. KAREN ROBINSON Karen Robinson is a Social Worker, Psychotherapist, Supervisor, Wife, Mother, Daughter, Niece, Cousin, Child of God, Friend, Neighbor, Girl Scout Leader, Perpetual Student, Coach, Ex-Wife, Sister, Aunt, Consultant, Speaker, Daughter-in-law, sister-in-law, Christian Counselor, and more. Karen is the host of the Heal Thrive Dream podcast. Her company's mission is to bring compassion, comfort, and healing to professional mothers recovering from childhood abuse. Today, we help Karen get clear with her process and interviews. Enjoy the conversation. BE A GUEST If you would like help with your podcast, let's talk. If you don't have a mentor who can take your hand and walk you every step of the way, go to www.PodcastTalentCoach.com/apply, click the button and apply to have a chat with me.
