A New Year's storm brought deadly flooding, high winds and landslides to the northern part of California, along with many feet of snow, shutting down roads and stranding drivers. New details are emerging in Idaho after police finally arrested a suspect in the murder of four college students. 28-year-old criminology student Bryan Kohberger was taken into custody Friday in Pennsylvania. In Washington, Republicans are all set to take control of the house, but leader Kevin McCarthy is being forced to make some big concessions to right wing members of the party in his bid to become speaker. It could be a sign of things to come, as republicans prepare to turn up the heat on President Biden. Turning to the war in Ukraine, Russia launched a new wave of drone attacks overnight, after strikes on cities killed three civilians on New Year's Eve. These attacks come as bitter fighting continues in some areas of the country, after recent Ukrainian successes on the battlefield. At the Vatican, it's a day of mourning for Pope Benedict XVI, who died on Saturday at age 95. Thousands filed past the Pope Emeritus' body, as it lay in state at St. Peter's Basilica. He will be buried by his successor, Pope Francis, on Thursday.

12/29: Travel trouble persists as another busy holiday weekend approaches. Migrants are still packing shelters at the U.S.-Mexico border.
The latest on the travel chaos for tens of thousands of fliers around the U.S. A big part of the misery is the mountains of luggage piled up at airports that were hard hit by bad weather over the past week. The dramatic spread of COVID-19 in china is pushing the U.S. to introduce new rules for travelers from that country. Starting one week from today, anyone leaving China for the U.S. will have to test negative for COVID before getting on a plane. A district attorney in long island, New York is investigating Congressman-elect George Santos. The Republican has admitted making a series of false statements about his education, work experience, and religious heritage. The Nassau County district attorney says her office will find out if Santos committed any crimes. Russia launched dozens of missiles this morning at targets across the country, but Ukraine says it shot most of them down. The Russians have also intensified shelling of the southern city of Kherson, recently liberated by Ukrainian forces. In Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu is returning to power for a record sixth time as his government is sworn-in this morning. His recent election victory led to the creation of a government that includes ultranationalist and religious parties that were once on the fringes of Israeli politics.

12/28: Southwest Airlines apologizes to customers after cancellations. Buffalo and western New York start digging out after deadly storm.
Southwest airlines cancelled more than 2,600 flights yesterday. By comparison, Delta, United, American, and JetBlue had fewer than 200 cancellations combined yesterday, after frigid weather hit air travel hard over the Christmas weekend. The airport in Buffalo, New York remains closed, and so are most of its streets, while the death toll from the Christmas blizzard keeps rising. A new storm system is hammering the west this morning. It has knocked out power to more than 200,000 homes and businesses across California, Oregon and Washington state. The Supreme Court has decided, for now, to keep in place a controversial policy that allows border officials to quickly expel many migrants seeking asylum. The white house wants to end that pandemic-era policy. New York Congressman-elect George Santos says he's determined to be part of the new Congress, after admitting he lied about much of his background. But he faces growing criticism even from fellow Republicans about his deception. The Vatican says this morning that retired Pope Benedict's health is "Worsening," and Pope Francis is asking the faithful to pray for him. One of the leaders of a plot to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has been sentenced to 16 years in prison. Adam Fox was convicted in august of conspiracy to kidnap, and conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction. In Ukraine, officials say Russian forces shelled the maternity wing of a hospital in the southern city of Kherson yesterday. Early reports indicate no one was hurt. It was the latest in a wave of Russian artillery attacks on the city since Russian forces withdrew from the area in November.

12/27: Buffalo winter storm death toll continues to climb. Airlines struggle to bounce back from massive disruptions.
The latest on the brutal weekend cold snap that swept over much of the country, killing at least 55 people. The worst of it is in western New York state. More snow blew through the Buffalo area overnight, and President Biden has declared a federal emergency there. Travelers who endured a nightmare journey to their Christmas destinations could have just as much trouble getting home. More than 17,000 flights in the U.S. have been cancelled since last Wednesday, leaving hundreds of thousands scrambling to make new plans. Now to the newest border fight between the Biden Administration and Texas Governor Greg Abbott. More than 100 migrants, bused from Texas to Washington, arrived at Vice President Kamala Harris's official residence on Christmas eve, when it was below freezing. The newly-elected congressman caught lying about his background is talking publicly about it for the first time. In a pair of interviews with conservative news outlets in New York City, Representative-elect George Santos defended his record, but admitted he had misstated his true biography. Most of the lies were revealed in an investigation by the New York times earlier this month. Health experts say a jump in flu, RSV, and COVID-19 cases could get worse after holiday gatherings. All these respiratory illnesses are driving up demand for children's medicines, and some pharmacy shelves are now empty. Turning to Ukraine, where the country's leaders are talking openly about the possibility of peace talks even as the fighting continues. Despite the war, Ukraine's Jewish community still managed to celebrate Hanukkah.

12/26: Winter storm blamed for at least 38 deaths in 7 states. China's top health authority says it will no longer publish daily case numbers.
We begin with the deadly winter storm that gave much of the country a freezing cold Christmas. The bomb cyclone is blamed for at least 38 deaths in 7 states. More than 60,000 utility customers are still without power, and some areas got record amounts of snow. Russia's military says it shot down a Ukrainian drone over an air base deep inside Russia overnight, and 3 Russian soldiers were killed by falling debris. In China, where new COVID infections are soaring, the country's top health authority says it will no longer publish daily case numbers. Authorities in Zhuh-Zhang province report 1 million new infections a day, and that number is expected to double in the coming days. Retailers expect about 18% or $158 billion of merchandise sold during the holiday shopping season to be returned. But this year many retailers are making changes to their return policy that could make it more difficult and costly for the consumer. Actor Peter Billingsley known for playing, "Ralphie" from the 1983 holiday classic "A Christmas Story," shares the unexpected turns his life has taken.

12/23: Winter storm causes travel nightmare for millions Americans. The January 6th Committee issues its final report.
A historic winter storm is raging across several states at this very moment. People are urged to use extreme caution when getting around on icy roads, and in whiteout conditions. Along with the snow, it's also bitterly cold in much of the country, and thousands have lost power, making conditions even worse. Today is expected to be the second busiest travel day around Christmas and New Year's. Already more than 3,100 flights in the U.S. have been canceled, and more than 900 others are delayed. The January 6th committee released its final report. It finds that, "the central cause of January 6th was one man, former President Donald Trump." The House Select Committee argues that due to his alleged involvement in the violence of that day, Trump should be barred from holding office in the future. Now to *breaking news* out of france - where authorities say at least three people have died, after a gunman opened fire just north of central Paris. FTX founder Sam Bankman-Freed has been released on $250 million bond after his first court appearance in the U.S. An update on a bizarre scandal surrounding Long Island Congressman-elect George Santos. A New York Times investigation suggests he fabricated parts of his life story -- including his education, his work history, and even his ethnic background.

12/22: Winter storm sweeps across U.S., crippling holiday travel. Ukrainian Pres. Zelenskyy makes a rare speech to Congress.
There are bitter temperatures and blizzard warnings in effect across multiple states just as millions of Americans are trying to get home for the holidays. About 3 million people are booked on around 47,000 scheduled flights today, making it one of the busiest travel days of the year. Now to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's historic visit to Washington. He received a hero's welcome when he arrived to speak to Congress last night. The visit came at a time when many Republicans are questioning U.S. spending on Ukraine's battle against Russia. Russian drones made another brutal attack on the capital city of Kyiv, Monday. From the beginning, soldiers and civilians have been under Russian attack. From Texas to California, it's estimated that tens of thousands of migrants are waiting for title 42 restrictions to end, so they can enter the U.S. to seek asylum. They will likely spend Christmas waiting in the cold. Sam Bankman-Freed, founder of the bankrupt crypto-currency exchange FTX, could appear in a U.S. court as soon as today. A man believed to be the 30-year-old former CEO landed at Westchester County Airport in New York overnight, after Bankman-Freed agreed to return. Federal prosecutors now say two of his associates, including his ex-girlfriend, have pleaded guilty to fraud charges and are cooperating with the investigation.

12/21: Holiday travel trouble. Ukrainian Pres. Zelenskyy heads to the Capitol to meet with Pres. Biden.
It could be tough to get where you want to be this holiday. Nasty weather across a wide swath of the country including rain, snow, and a bitter cold blast over the next several days. Nearly 113 million Americans expected to travel for the holidays, more than a third of the population. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy heads to the Capitol to meet with President Biden and address a joint session of Congress. It's his first foreign trip since Russia invaded his country in February. Former President Trump's long effort to keep his tax returns hidden is coming to an end. Congress had big stacks of documents wheeled in, as House Democrats voted to finally make those returns public. Texas is trying to counter America's border crisis with a big show of force. Members of the Texas National Guard have been deployed, along with heavy duty equipment, to help keep migrants out amid fears of a major spike in asylum-seekers, if a pandemic-era policy is allowed to expire. In northern California, the power is still out for more than 14,000 customers hit by yesterday's powerful earthquake. The Governor declared a state of emergency for the area, about 200 miles north of San Francisco. In Afghanistan, the Taliban is limiting more rights and freedoms for its female citizens. The Government ordered a ban yesterday on women attending universities. This means girls won't be able to get more than a sixth- grade education in that country.
