12/20: House Jan. 6 committee recommends criminal charges for Trump. The Supreme Court temporarily pauses lifting Title 42.

The House committee on January 6th has recommended criminal charges against former President Trump, and several others close to him. We saw the final public hearing of the committee yesterday, after an 18-month investigation, but there could be more revelations to come. Harvey Weinstein has been convicted in another sex-crimes trial, this time in Los Angeles. A jury found him guilty yesterday of three charges, including rape, but cleared him, or failed to reach a verdict, on several other counts. The number of migrants crossing in El Paso, Texas has gone down in recent days, but there are fears of a huge spike ahead. That's because a pandemic-era immigration policy could soon expire, perhaps as early as midnight tonight, despite a temporary hold on the rule from the Supreme Court. China is battling a disturbing new surge of COVID infections. A new study from the University of Hong Kong warns the country could see nearly a million deaths from the virus this winter, after lifting its harsh zero COVID policies. A 6.4 magnitude earthquake in California hit along the pacific coast overnight. The U.S. Geological Survey says the nearest town to the epicenter is Ferndale, some 4.5 hours north of San Francisco. A wide range of potential offenses could be on the table, including insurrection, although these would be recommendations for the Justice Department, not official charges. Turning now to the humanitarian crisis at America's southern border. Thousands of migrants are crossing into El Paso, Texas each day. The city's mayor has declared a state of emergency. The scheduled end of a pandemic-era policy called title 42 this week could make things even worse. Travelers on a plane going to Hawaii had a sudden midair scare yesterday when the jet hit dangerous turbulence. 36 people on a Hawaiian Airlines flight from Phoenix to Honolulu were hurt. The failed crypto-currency CEO, Sam Bankman-Freed, is no longer expected to fight his return to the U.S., according to the Reuters news agency. This morning, Argentina is bringing the World Cup home, after an extraordinary finish to the world's biggest sporting event. At least 3 people were killed by storms across all of Louisiana, and a big cleanup is underway. For the 4th straight day, severe weather will threaten the south. The latest from El Paso, Texas, where a sudden jump in migrants seeking asylum is straining local resources. More than 2,000 people a day are arriving at the border to be processed. Local leaders say the number has become unsustainable. Although inflation is slowing down, regulators say rising prices will be an issue for months to come. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell made that clear yesterday, as the central bank raised interest rates for the 7th time this year. Tens of millions of Americans could be affected. New details about the man accused of attacking Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband with a hammer. Police say David Depape has admitted he had other targets as well, including an Oscar-winning movie star. Paul Pelosi suffered a skull fracture in the attack. Russia has released an American citizen in a mass prisoner swap with Ukraine. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran who lived in Ukraine, and was detained by pro-Russian forces several months ago. Here in the U.S., the Senate has voted unanimously to ban TikTok on government devices, amid fears the China-owned app could be used to spy on Americans. Hollywood is mourning the shocking loss of dancer and entertainer Stephen "Twitch" Boss.
