Episode 67: Is Broadcom (AVGO) Stock A Buy Now?

Broadcom (AVGO) has finally closed its acquisition of VMware (VMW) after a year-and-a-half since it was originally announced in May 2022. The newly combined company is a juggernaut in computing infrastructure and software, and a unique stock. The new Broadcom is almost a fifty-fifty split between semiconductors and cloud and enterprise software. But is Broadcom stock really a buy now that it owns VMware? Chip Stock Investor breaks down the financials, and explains how Broadcom’s sprawling chip and cloud software business is organized and managed. Nick and Kasey also discuss an important valuation metric using enterprise value and free cash flow, and what Broadcom’s key priority will be in the next couple years. Additionally, they explain why Broadcom stock may not be the value it was a year ago when they were buying it last. And finally, they take a look at the implications of Broadcom’s high level of debt. Over two years ago, Nick called out similarities between Intel (INTC) and IBM of the 2010s, and early in 2023 discussed mounting headwinds for Texas Instruments (TXN). Now, he’s calling out a potential issue that Broadcom investors should be mindful of. Is Broadcom becoming the next General Electric (GE)? That may be a premature call, but investors interested in or invested in Broadcom should be aware of new risks after the VMware purchase. Don’t miss this important episode of Chip Stock Investor! Nvidia blew away expectations again in Q3 as AI sales to a new breed of data centers continues at a breakneck pace. Additionally, Nvidia seems to be also enjoying the start of a robust recovery for the PC market, as peers AMD and Intel also reported recently. Chip Stock Investors Nick and Kasey revamp their valuation with assumptions for the rest of this year, and an early look at what 2024 could hold for Nvidia. They then give their thoughts on whether Nvidia stock is a buy, and how most investors may want to approach a stock like this one. At the end of the episode, a brief recap of Broadcom’s valuation now that the VMware acquisition is being completed is also given. Stay tuned for more on that topic! Episode 65: Does Applied Materials Legal Issues Mean ASML Is Next? And OpenAI Business Model Drama

It was a dramatic weekend in the high tech world. OpenAI fired its co-founder and CEO, Sam Altman, and the subsequent uprising has many scratching their heads over the generative AI app creator. Altman is now at Microsoft. Chip Stock Investor has a hunch and a few ideas as to why Microsoft may want Altman to stay in-house, and surprise(!), it may have to do with semiconductors! Reuters also threw a wrench into a seemingly decent Applied Materials (AMAT) quarterly earnings late last week. The report claims that AMAT sold “hundreds of millions of dollars” worth of machines that were under the U.S. export ban to China. If you have been reading the 10-Q filings, though, you would know that this has been disclosed in each quarterly report since August 2022. But this does beg the question: Will this investigation stop at Applied Materials? Or will it also affect companies like ASML and others in the “Fab Five” that sell semiconductor manufacturing equipment? Also, India has been pushing hard to bring semiconductor manufacturing to the country. News from Tata Group! Stay tuned to Chip Stock Investor for an Nvidia (NVDA) quarterly update later in the week! Episode 64: Nvidia H200 Is Coming, Will AMD and Intel “Catch Up” In the AI Arms Race?

Nvidia recently announced its newest GPU-powered system for AI training and inference, the H200. This will be the first using HBM3e (an updated version of third-generation high-bandwidth memory) integrated with Nvidia’s Hopper GPU chip architecture to deliver more data for AI training and inference.  Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang is clearly aware of coming competition, as he’s always been in the past, but the stakes have never been higher. AMD and Intel have AI chips of their own. AMD in particular has been investing in accompanying software (the ROCm ecosystem) to “catch up” to Nvidia. But is this even possible? And more importantly, is playing “catch up” even the best way to measure progress for investors in AMD and Intel? Chip Stock Investors Nick and Kasey discuss two general things that need to happen to unseat a technological leader. After that, they invert the argument for AMD and Intel and provide some simple metrics shareholders in the two companies can use in the year ahead as the AI race heats up. Episode 63: Tesla’s Lithium Refinery “A License to Print Money,” and Is Livent (LTHM) Stock Out Of Juice?

In this video, we will discuss Tesla's recent move into lithium refining and what it means for the company, and the electric vehicle industry as a whole. Tesla is investing in lithium refining with the new facility being built in Texas, in order to reduce its reliance on external suppliers and lower the cost of its electric vehicles. This is a smart move, as lithium is a key component of EV batteries and a significant cost of the electric vehicle. Tesla's move into lithium refining could put pressure on its competitors, who will need to find ways to reduce their own costs in order to compete. This could lead to an even deeper price war in the EV industry, which would be good for consumers, and one in which Tesla is most capable of winning. Livent, another lithium company, is merging with Allkem, to form the company Arcadium. The deal is expected to close by the end of 2023. The merger with Allkem would further vertically integrate the company and make it more competitive in the lithium production space as well. However, Livent stock has taken a beating, with the cost of raw lithium tumbling in the last several months. However, lithium refining is a lucrative business, and Livent seems to have that “license to print money” that Elon Musk was talking about. What are our long term thoughts on each of these companies, and the lithium market overall? Check out this episode to find out! Episode 62: Warren Buffett’s Energy Bets Going Bust, and Air Products (APD) and Albemarle (ALB) Stock Disaster?

It’s been a rough earnings season for many stocks, and “next-gen” energy and fuel companies have been no exception. Leader in hydrogen and liquid natural gas Air Products and Chemicals (APD) continues its big spending spree on infrastructure for future growth, as has Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A)(BRK.B). In the lithium market, Albemarle (ALB) once again adjusted its 2023 expectations as well. It’s been a particularly turbulent year for this sensitive and cyclical proxy stock for electric vehicle growth. What’s going on? Chip Stock Investors Nick and Kasey delve into some of the current challenges for these companies, including some accounting effects, that could dramatically ease in 2024. They also unpack why big expenses on infrastructure don’t phase them as much as they do for chip manufacturing company Texas Instruments (TXN) as they discuss the importance of industry dynamics and business model when building a portfolio. Episode 61: Qualcomm vs. Apple Stock -- 2 New Chips Attack the Big Laptop Market

Qualcomm is a mobile chipmaker and designer that has been trying to break into the laptop market for years. Apple has been a major player in laptops and made significant headway with the introduction of the M-series chip in 2020. Just recently, Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon X Elite laptop chips. The Snapdragon X Elite is based on Arm architecture and will give x86 chip makers Intel and AMD, and maybe even Apple (?) a run for their money. It remains to be seen whether Qualcomm will be successful in its attempt to enter the laptop market. However, the Snapdragon X Elite platform is a significant improvement over Qualcomm's previous efforts, and it could give Qualcomm a competitive edge. Meanwhile, Apple just front-ran Qualcomm with the quick announcement and availability of MacBooks powered by the M3 chips. The competition between these two companies could lead to more innovation in the laptop market, as both try to develop the best possible products as far as power-to-performance goes. Which stock is a better buy in this important area of the semiconductor race? Chip Stock Investor breaks it down in this episode, along with a brief history of the x86 vs. Arm laptop chip battle in recent decades. Episode 59: Is the Bear Market Really Over? Best Ultra-Long-Term Stocks to Buy Now

Many stocks, especially large- and mega-caps, have performed incredibly well in 2023. It would seem the bear market is a distant memory. But that’s not the case for everyone. Many companies, especially smaller ones, are still down significantly from highs, and catching a fresh wave of pessimism from investors in recent weeks. Chip Stock Investor takes a break from semiconductors in this video to discuss what a bear market is, what causes them, and when new bull markets begin. They also discuss some of the backdrop that has caused so much investor pain going on year three, and the composition of some of their “core portfolio holdings” that they plan on holding indefinitely. Episode 58: A New Semiconductor Recession? Onsemi, Aehr Test Systems, and Lattice Semiconductor Stocks Plummet

The end of October served up a nasty shock to some semiconductor stock investors. As interest rates rise and electric vehicles (EVs) become less affordable to finance, some demand is weakening and throttling growth prospects. Onsemi (ON) confirmed as much in its Q3 2023 earnings update, sending its shares (and those of Aehr Test Systems (AEHR), which derives most of its revenue from Onsemi) down by some 20% in a day. The market wasn’t much happier with Lattice Semiconductor (LSCC), which also counts industrial and automotive markets as top customers. It had another strong showing in Q3, but it's outlook is also cloudy. The stock has crashed from all-time highs in recent weeks. Chip Stock Investors Nick and Kasey discuss these three top stocks, and whether the drop is a buying opportunity. Besides a general market overview, they also provide a fair value estimate using a discounted cash flow model, and how they’re handling their own small positions in Onsemi, Aehr Test Systems, and Lattice Semiconductor.
