Episode 57: The “Infinitely Scalable” Business Model, and Are Semiconductors Really the “New Oil”?
Investors often talk about the beauty of software businesses being “infinitely scalable,” and why software stocks have greater potential than the “new oil” semiconductor industry.
However, past results suggest something very different. The so-called commodity semiconductor industry is greatly outperforming software. Why? Is software really infinitely scalable? And are chips really the new oil?
Chip Stock Investors Nick and Kasey discuss this effect, the importance of understanding how industries are structured, and the business model of the best stocks to focus for the decade ahead.

Episode 56: 1 Top Chip Stock Making Waves In Healthcare and Drug Discovery (CDNS)
In this episode of Chip Stock Investor, Nick and Kasey review another stellar quarter from EDA (electronic design automation) software company Cadence Design Systems (CDNS). Some headlines have suggested the company is suffering from a weak semiconductor industry, but nothing could be further from the truth.
Cadence and its EDA peers benefit from increased R&D as chip and computing system designs get more complex. Now Cadence is betting on a similar dynamic playing out among big pharmaceutical and biotech companies. Cadence is in the early stages of making its OpenEye Scientific acquisition (over the summer of 2022) a giant in computing power for drug discovery, development, and optimization. Similar trends in chip and AI could help propel this new market for Cadence higher as well.
Finally, Nick and Kasey discuss valuation, and assumptions the market may have for Cadence stock. There’s no denying shares trade for a very high premium, so they discuss how investors may choose to approach this top chip stock if they don’t already own it.

Episode 55: Is Intuitive Surgical Stock Sunk Because of Ozempic and GLP-1 Weight Loss Drugs?
Intuitive Surgical (ISRG) is one of our favorite “forever stocks” at Chip Stock Investor, best known for its Da Vinci robotic surgical system. The company's stock has been a strong performer over the long term, but it has recently come under pressure due to the growing popularity of GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) weight-loss drugs like Ozempic. GLP-1s are also associated with a number of other health benefits, including a reduced risk of diabetes and heart disease.
It appears the popularity of Ozempic is already having an impact on Intuitive Surgical's business, and some investors worry GLP-1s could lead to a decline in the number of bariatric and related surgeries over time.
However, over the long term, the impact of Ozempic on Intuitive Surgical may not be as important as some fear. Like most things in investing, the impact of a disruptive force like Ozempic on the business world is a complex issue. Nick asks Kasey to weigh in on the matter given her past experience in the operating room.

Episode 54: Are Hopes For An End-of-Year Stock Rally Now Gone? Tesla (TSLA), Lam (LRCX), and Taiwan Semi (TSM)
In this video, we discuss the latest earnings reports from Tesla (TSLA), Lam Research (LRCX), and Taiwan Semi (TSM), and what they mean for a possible end-of-year stock rally.
Tesla's Q3 2023 earnings weren’t great, with revenue and deliveries below expectations. The EV price war is hurting, and even Elon Musk said Cybertruck production is going to hurt. However, the company is still on track to produce 1.8 million vehicles in 2023, and is making progress on its 4680 battery cell production and new factories in Berlin and Texas. Did Tesla really “dig its own grave” as Musk quipped?
Lam Research is expected to recover in 2024, but profit margins could flatline as the company invests in new chip developments. We think LRCX is a moderate buy, and perhaps a better bet on the memory chip market than Micron, given its profitable, repurchasing stock, and pays a 1.3% a year dividend yield. But investors may need to endure some hurdles.
TSM's CEO sees the return to industry growth in Q4 2023, driven by the continued strong ramp of its 3-nanometer technology. However, inventory digestion is expected to continue due to the persistent weaker overall macroeconomic conditions, slow demand recovery in China, and ongoing weakness in PC and smartphone sales. Is it time to buy the world’s largest and most advanced chip manufacturer?
Overall, we are cautiously optimistic about the end-of-year stock rally, in spite of surging interest rates. Tesla, Lam Research, and Taiwan Semi are all well-positioned to benefit from the long-term growth of the semiconductor industry. However, investors should be aware of the potential risks, and invest accordingly. Tune in for this important episode of Chip Stock Investor!

ASML Q3 2023 Earnings Update: Is ASML Going to Miss Its 2025 Financial Targets?
ASML Holding is notching impressive growth in 2023, but management has now flagged 2024 as a "transition year." Customers still aren't making purchase orders, and it seems the company's most advanced EUV (extreme ultraviolet) lithography systems are experiencing sluggish adoption.
Could this put ASML's aggressive financial targets for 2025 at risk? Chip Stock Investors Nick and Kasey discuss the implications of the last quarterly earnings update, how it impacts ASML stock's valuation, and how they're handling their investment in the top chip fab equipment company.
Stay tuned later in the week for updates on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM) and Lam Research (LRCX)!

Episode 53: Are ASML’s Days of Lithography Dominance Coming to An End? ASML and Canon Stock Analysis
ASML has a stranglehold (but not a total monopoly) on lithography equipment for semiconductor manufacturing. Japanese conglomerate Canon (CAJPY) is doubling down on competing advanced chipmaking equipment it originally acquired in 2014, and recently announced a new breakthrough it thinks could compete with ASML’s most advanced machines. Canon certainly wants to be more than a PR-driven player in this department, but ASML’s roots are deep in the chip supply chain.
In this video, Chip Stock Investors Nick and Kasey discuss aspects of lithography that make ASML special, but how Canon’s nanoimprint lithography (NIL) machines could make some headway in the years to come. They also discuss how they’re handling ASML stock, given its elevated valuation and new risks that could emerge for the business.

Episode 52: Aehr Test Systems Warning to the EV Industry, and Taiwan Semi’s Poor Stock Performance
Aehr Test Systems is a hyper-growth small-cap stock, but its huge run up in the last year has sent the valuation sky-high. Investors are split on the merits of buying now. In light of this, CEO Gayn Erickson dropped some highly useful data regarding the EV industry during the last earnings update. Nick and Kasey discuss what they're doing regarding AEHR stock right now after selling for a tidy profit a few months ago.
Chip foundry powerhouse Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM) reported September sales, and it's indicating Q3 2023 earnings could be ugly. Nevertheless, AI and other chip needs should push the company back into growth mode. But when? Chip Stock Investor mulls over reasons TSM could be a buy now, and why some investors might want to hold tight.

Episode 51: 3 Stocks We're Buying In October 2023 (AMAT, CRM, CROX)
It’s been a wild couple of months, with plenty of bad news weighing down the stock market: rising interest rates, political discord and dysfunction, renewed calls for a coming recession, and war.
But deals can still be found for investors with a long-term mindset, and oftentimes it’s easiest to find deals among common business names -- perhaps ones you already own.
In this month’s “shallow dive” of top stocks, Nick and Kasey discuss three stocks they are definitely buying more of, why, and possible risks for each of them.
Stay tuned later in the week for an earnings update on Aehr Test Systems (AEHR) and a preview on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM).

Episode 50: 1 Cheap Chip Stock For October 2023 (Tower Semi), and How to Invest In The Sphere Las Vegas (SPHR)
In the last Chip Stock Investor video, we discussed two cheap small-cap chip stocks we're watching closely in the coming months. This time we're adding small chip manufacturer Tower Semiconductor (TSEM) to that list. Nick and Kasey discuss what has happened since Intel's (INTC) failed acquisition of Tower, why it could be a great value stock right now, and what will move them off the sideline and buy the stock.
In keeping with the small-cap stock theme, Chip Stock Investor next discusses The Sphere. The next-gen tech property in Las Vegas recently opened with a U2 concert, and early reviews show this could be the future of entertainment venues. Nevertheless, Nick and Kasey dug up some particular financial risks investors should be aware of with investing in Sphere Entertainment (SPHR), the holding company for The Sphere Las Vegas, and its ties to an older sports and media empire.

Episode 49: Photronics (PLAB) and Amkor (AMKR): Two Cheap Chip Stocks to Buy For the End of 2023?
Our last episode about ASML and the semiconductor lithography equipment market briefly discussed the photomask business Photronics (PLAB). Lithography is a critical step in semiconductor manufacturing, and it can’t be done without photomasks. That’s where Photronics comes in. It’s a small business with a sharp focus, and it’s profitable. Is it a good long-term buy? Chip Stock Investors Nick and Kasey discuss.
Next up is Amkor (AMKR), an OSAT, or outsourced semiconductor assembly and test company. They package and test semiconductors and computing systems for leading companies such as Taiwan Semiconductor. There has been a steep drop in stock price recently. Why did this happen and is it cheap enough for us to add to our portfolio?
All of this and more in this “value stock” edition of Chip Stock Investor!
