Sabr

Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan gives a mesmerizing lecture on the reflections from the Qur'an regarding Sabr. Sabr is impossible without Shukr.  Almost a hundred verses in the Qur'an command us to be patient and teach us about the blessings of patience. Anas RA  said that the Prophet ﷺ said, “The real patience is at the first stroke of a calamity.” Being patient is a part of belief in Allah. Many prophets like Nuh AS, Ibrahim AS, Musa AS, Ayyub AS, and Prophet Muhammad SAW set forward exemplary standards of patience in the wake of insults, humiliation, and torture. Sabr and Iman go hand in hand. True righteousness is depicted when we exhibit patience or Sabr. Those who are patient are promised glad tidings by Allah on the Day of Judgement. It is through patience that Allah will save us from the punishment of Allah.

Jumuah Khutbah 12-09-2016

Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan centres his Khutbah around some of the Ayats belonging to Surah Al Yusuf that involves the wisdom coming from Yaqub AS and encapsulates this beautifully in Surah Al Yusuf. The education provided by the Qur'an makes us a better human being.  “[Of these stories mention] when Joseph said to his father, "O my father, indeed I have seen [in a dream] eleven stars and the sun and the moon; I saw them prostrating to me."[Of these stories mention] when Joseph said to his father, "O my father, indeed I have seen [in a dream] eleven stars and the sun and the moon; I saw them prostrating to me." [Surah Al Yusuf] The Tafseer of the above Ayats have been elaborated in immense detail in order for us to fully comprehend the beauty of the education that Allah SWT is imparting us through this magnificent Surah.

Surat Al-Baqarah - Part 55

Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan delves into an explicit explanation of Ayats 143 - 144 of Surah Al Baqarah. “And thus we have made you a just community that you will be witnesses over the people and the Messenger will be a witness over you. And We did not make the qiblah which you used to face except that We might make evident who would follow the Messenger from who would turn back on his heels. And indeed, it is difficult except for those whom Allah has guided. And never would Allah have caused you to lose your faith. Indeed Allah is, to the people, Kind and Merciful. We have certainly seen the turning of your face, [O Muhammad], toward heaven, and We will surely turn you to a qiblah with which you will be pleased. So turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Haram. And wherever you [believers] are, turn your faces toward it [in prayer]. Indeed, those who have been given the Scripture well know that it is the truth from their Lord. And Allah is not unaware of what they do.” If one is a Prophet, he had two attributes: He has to deliver the message of Allah clearly.  He has to live the message of Allah clearly. What is the meaning that we have become an Ummah and we share this responsibility?? The Messenger delivered the message to us and that message, in summary, is Allah’s book. His ﷺ  life mission was to deliver this book to the best of his ability and he did his job, He finished his job, to represent it’s teaching in our character, not only that but to be closer to Allah. Two things that will ensure success in this world and the Hereafter:     One thing is the promise of the Messenger ﷺ.      The second thing is the promise of Allah. Allah’s promise to us is said to us three times which is to really be an Ummah is to be united and Allah says “hold on to Allah’s rope tightly”. That rope of Allah is the Quran. The more we are tied to the Quran, the more we are tied to each other and it’s the glue that bonds us.

Surat Al-Baqarah - Part 54

Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan delves into an explicit explanation of verse number 142 from the esteemed Surah Al Baqarah. سَيَقُوۡلُ السُّفَهَآءُ مِنَ النَّاسِ مَا وَلّٰٮهُمۡ عَنۡ قِبۡلَتِهِمُ الَّتِىۡ كَانُوۡا عَلَيۡهَا ؕ قُل لِّلّٰهِ الۡمَشۡرِقُ وَالۡمَغۡرِبُ ؕ يَهۡدِىۡ مَنۡ يَّشَآءُ اِلٰى صِراطٍ مُّسۡتَقِيۡمٍ‏ ‘So now the foolish people will say, “What has turned the Muslims away from the qiblah (prayer direction) which they formerly observed?”; proclaim, “To Allah only belong the East and the West; He guides whomever He wills upon the Straight Path.” After his migration to Madina the Prophet ﷺ continued to pray in the direction of Jerusalem for between sixteen and seventeen months. Subsequently, he received the order to pray in the direction of the Ka'bah. This reinstates a point in the narrow minds of the ignorant people and those with limited vision that lend undue attachment to formalities such as the direction and location of Prayer. They presumably conceived Allah to be confined to a particular direction.  In reply to their absurd objection the first thing which was explained was that all directions belong to Allah. Fixing any particular direction for Prayer does not mean that Allah is confined to that direction. All those who have been favored with the true guidance of Allah SWT rise above these conformities and look at the wider aspect of our Deen - Worship of Allah SWT and following the message sent to us through His beloved Prophet ﷺ.

Surat Al-Baqarah - Part 53

Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan delves into an explicit and elaborated explanation on the Ayats 135 -141 of Surah Al Baqarah. And they say: 'Be Jews or Christians, you will be rightly guided” Say: “Nay! (we follow) the religion of Ibrahim, the upright one, and he was not of the polytheist” (135). Say: “We believe in Allah and (in) that which has been revealed to us, and (in) that which was revealed to Ibrahim and Isma'il and Ishaq and Ya'qub and the tribes, and (in) that which was given to Musa and Isa, and (in) that which was given to the prophets from their Lord, we do not make any distinction between any of them, and to Him do we submit” (136). If then they believe in like of what you believe in, they are indeed on the right course, and if they turn back, then they are only in great dissension; so Allah will suffice you against them, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing (137). (We have received) the dyeing of Allah, and who is better than Allah in dyeing? and Him do we worship (138). Say: “Do you dispute with us about Allah? and He is our Lord and your Lord, and for us our deeds and for you are your deeds; and we are sincere to Him (139). Or, do you say that Ibrahim and Isma'il and Ya'qiib and the tribes were Jews or Christians?” Say: “Are you better knowing or Allah? And who is more unjust than he who conceals a testimony that he has from Allah? And Allah is not at all heedless of what you do” (140). This is a people that have passed away; they shall have what they earned and you shall have what you earn, and you shall not be called upon to answer for what they did (141). We need to understand that in comparison to Islam, both Judaism and Christianity came much later. Hence, if man's guidance depends on following Judaism or Christianity, how can Ibrahim AS and other Prophets who are accepted as having been rightly-guided even by the Jews and Christians be considered so when they were born several centuries before the birth of Judaism and Christianity? If they were rightly-guided from whom did they receive their guidance? The answer lies in this thought-provoking lecture and deserves a fair listen. All the Prophets sent by Allah invited mankind to the Message of Allah and hence, for anyone who is really a lover of Deen, it is necessary that he should recognize all of them to be its bearers and not just believe in one single Prophet.

Never Fear The Enemies Of Islam

It can be challenging to practice Islam in America today. The bigotry, Islamophobia, xenophobia, media bias, and constant need to apologize for Muslim extremist actions can take its toll on us. Part of being an American Muslim is standing up for our beliefs and speaking truth to ignorance. It is time for us to stop apologizing, and to unapologetically declare that we are proud to be Muslims in America. Delivered at the 15th Annual MAS-ICNA Convention.

Surat Al-Baqarah - Part 50

Ustadh Nouman Ali Khan delivers an excellent lecture highlighting the meaning of Ayat number 129 of Surah Al Baqarah. This Ayat captures the way Prophet Ibrahim AS plans to secure the future of his coming generation. “Our Lord! and raise up in them an Apostle from among themselves who shall recite to them Your communications and teach them the Book and wisdom, and purify them; surely You are the Mighty, the Wise.”  Today we are an ethnically oriented society, age oriented society, etc., all sharing a common Deen - Islam. Hence, it is of paramount importance that we among ourselves appoint the carriers of the Message of Allah for each of these different fragments of society so that no one is left out from the beauty of Islam. Humility is something we should cultivate from within us and it cannot be gauged from the outside. Wisdom mentioned in the Quran includes the belief and morals we need to inculcate within us. Morals and laws coexist and should go hand in hand.
