Getting our game on with the Sydney Frontrunners, All Gender Games, Rainbow Crows and Josh Cavallo
Welcome to Game On JOY 94.9’s Home of Sport every Wednesday from 6-7pm where you’ll hear where you can get your game on! This show is all about showcasing where sport is safe, inclusive, welcoming and fun for the Rainbow community!
Ben Drogemuller, Co-President – Sydney Frontrunners – a community running club that champions inclusivity and connection through sport shares “Marathon Training 101” – the essentials for anyone thinking about taking on the challenge of 42.2 kilometres. Ben also gives us the benefits of joining a running group and has a call out to anyone who might like to volunteer at the Sydney Marathon on Sunday 31 August as a marshall! Get involved and join the crew for a bevvy and some banter after the event! (2.20)
The All Gender Games is back for another season. It’s a soccer competition and training program for LGBTQIA+ folks in Melbourne Victoria. They are all about community, love for soccer and carving out queer-trans participation in sports. Plus, the Games serve a free banquet after every game. Cat Hoang, Director of the highly successful event now in it’s fourth year tells us more and encourages you to get involved! (21:36)
We then talk footy – AFL with Brendan McGarrigan, Committee Member of the Rainbow Crows – the official Adelaide Crows LGBTIQA+ supporter group. Brendan updates us on how you can head to the footy safely, have fun and proudly wear your Rainbow colours and we chat about a recent unfortunate alleged homophobic slur which has made the headlines this week and the upshot. And to close the show who is getting their game on? Professional footballer Josh Cavallo. Josh made history by coming out as gay in October 2021, becoming the first openly gay professional male footballer in a top-flight league with Adelaide United. He was recently a guest on Shaun Micallef’s ABC program Eve of Destruction where each guest brings on two items they’d save as their home is destroyed. One of the items Josh brought is a photo of him proposing to his partner Leighton Morrell at Coopers Stadium in Adelaide. Josh shares the importance of openly being your authentic self. (40:00)

Beau Newell National Program Manager with Pride In Sport who has been a fantastic supporter of the show is moving on to greener pastures. As of tomorrow! So the show is dedicated to Beau, the legacy he has left in sport over the past six and a half years with Pride In Sport, and a thank you for his incredible support over the years on the show.
We hear from Kristina Mitsikas, Senior Manager Inclusion and Innovation, UWA Sport ( University of Western Australia) about starting from scratch on an LGBTIQA+ sport inclusion journey.
Cassie Lindsey, Inclusion, Diversity & Equity Specialist, Red Consulting and Training, chats about about winning the Pride In Sport Ally of the Year award and the role of major sport to be an agent of change
And we look to the future chatting with Ben Cork currently Senior Relationship Manager with Pride In Sport.
We also have one more special guest join the show Ian Roberts, Australia’s first openly gay National Rugby League player, and now Director and Co-Founder of Qtopia-Sydney, Australia’s first LGBTIQA+ history museum. Ian shares his journey in sport and the impact Pride In Sport has had over the years for the LGBTIQA+ community.

Stephen is a Clinical Myotherapist with Muscle Motion and a member and medic with the Melbourne Chargers. Lita Neptune joins the show again to share her love for competitive pinball and to tell us how she went at BPAC – the Brisbane Pinball & Arcade Collective where she competed with other passionate pinball peeps. And the Federation of Gay Games judges and delegates were in Perth last month checking out whether to select Perth as the host for the world’s largest sport and culture event for the LGBTIQA+ community and allies – the Gay Games. It is down to two cities – Denver in America and us for the 2030 Gay Games 13! Justin Barnes is the volunteer Chair of Team Perth, the HUB for LGBTQIA+ Sport in Western Australia and the Director of Marketing & Community for Perth’s 2030 Gay Games Bid and joins us after with an update. We chat with Madi Crowley-Long, Participation & Programs Manager – Metro North, Brisbane, Queensland about making strides in pride in the AFL across the Sunshine State. The team won the Pride In Sport 2025 LGBTQ+ Inclusive Innovation Award earlier this year for the 2024 Jarah Corporate Pride Round spanning across all AFL Queensland’s competitions, bringing vibrant colours and celebrations to ovals all over the state with educational sessions. We spoke with Tom Harley, Chief Executive Officer, Sydney Swans about another important event on the AFL inclusive sporting calendar – the annual Sydney Swans AFL Pride game now in its 10th Year. This year the Swans take on the Bombers in a show of support for unity across the game. Tom shares the exiting events in the lead up to the first bounce on Saturday 2 August at the SCG, the significance of the game, and how he aims to continue with inclusion efforts across the AFL when he takes on his new role at AFL House in October as Chief Operating Officer. Movember is on a mission to help men, and their communities, live healthier, longer lives and has partnered with Pride Cup to change men’s health in sport by reducing homophobic behaviour through engaging young men in meaningful conversations about inclusion, respect and belonging. And the TCS Sydney Marathon has become a member of Pride in Sport reinforcing their commitment to building a running community that is diverse, welcoming, and empowered at every level so we hear about all the opportunities for avid runners! Alex Watson, Outreach Manager with The Flying Bats is on the line sharing all the fun of the club’s first ever Pride Cup on July 6 after 40 years in operation. The Flying Bats is the largest LGBTIQA+ football club in the world. Based in Sydney, Australia, the Club was founded in 1985, is run by a dedicated committee of volunteers.
