Creating Soundtracks for Dreams: The Healing Power of Music with Dr Michael Mollura

Today’s guest composes music to his patient’s dreams, capturing feelings and moods and deepening the psychotherapeutic process. Dr. Michael Mollura is a PhD licensed clinical psychologist and also an award-winning music composer for TV and movies. Michael started by scoring music to his own dreams and later found out how valuable the practice was in deepening the healing for his psychotherapy clients. We play a clip of one such piece called Scary Path Dream. Michael describes the process of scoring the piece including using cello to represent the waving branches of the trees. He also describes the effect that listening to this creation had on his client in deepening her process and even bringing up waking life memories that she had forgotten. We take a call from Steven Ernenwein who describes his own experience scoring music for the dreams of guests on his podcast The Dreams that Shape Us. BIO: Dr. Michael Mollura is a licensed clinical psychologist with a Ph.D from Pacifica Graduate Institute and a Master’s Degree in Performance Studies from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. He composes music to the dream reports of his psychotherapy clients as a way of accessing unconscious material to provide healing pathways on neurological and collective levels. The therapy draws a bridge between Dr. Mollura’s work as a professional award-winning music composer and as a clinician and is an innovative way to promote healing and well-being for his clients. Have you ever felt better about yourself after telling someone your story? Today we speak with author and cult survivor Gerette Buglion who guides others to tell their “I got out” stories in a process she calls Writing to Reckon. Doing the Opposite with Chris Cunniffe

When should you do the opposite of what you usually do?  Today we speak about lucid dreaming, shadow work, and dream yoga with Chris Cunniffe. Chris had been a lawyer for 8 years when he had a dream which nudged him onto a more spiritual path. In the dream, Chris was at a Milli Vanilli conference which led him to wonder about what part of his life was a false front. Chris urges us to consider “doing the opposite”. For example: dreaming is meaningless; consider that it might be meaningful. Nightmares are bad and should  be avoided; perhaps they are helpful. I should run away from that monster in my dream; maybe I should turn towards it. Chris gives examples of using this idea with shadow dream figures. We then speak about treating waking life as a lucid dream including connecting with those cartoon-like figures we encounter over and over. I got some personal ahas from this discussion about my own trouble delegating tasks. We end by talking about the idea that some of the people we meet in our dreams are counterparts or soulmates. BIO: Chris is a graduate of Holy Cross College (1993) and Harvard Law School (1996). He has a career background as an entrepreneur in both law and real estate. In 2015, Chris founded Lucid Coaching, LLC, as a creative vehicle for offering coaching services to clients and for publishing articles and videos about dreams, personal development, and spirituality. Chris currently serves as a board member and volunteer facilitator at Bliss Spiritual Co-op, a Charleston based retreat center, where he facilitates discussion groups about dreams and other topics. The Natural Dream, a Rodger Kamenetz Replay

Instead of puzzling over the meaning of your dreams, bring them to life with Natural Dreamwork. This show originally aired last Fall. Katherine speaks with poet and author Rodger Kamenetz. He suggests a practice of exploring dreams which starts with counting your blessings. He also spoke about dreams as symbolic in the same way that poems are and about dreaming as a sacred encounter. We take calls from Kat from Delaware who dreams about a baby with a too long neck and from Maureen who dreams about waiting for her boyfriend by two bridges. BIO: Rodger Kamenetz is the author of 15 books of poetry and prose. His book The Jew in the Lotus is an international best-seller. He is Professor Emeritus at LSU where he founded the MFA program in creative writing and the Jewish Studies minor. He is the founder of Natural Dreamwork, an international group of twenty dreamwork practitioners who approach the dream as a natural resource for healing and spiritual growth. The History of Last Night’s Dream was featured on Oprah Winfrey’s Soul Series. The Natural Dreamwork approach is to avoid interpretation and focus instead on bringing to life rich moments of feeling in dreams that arise in sacred encounters. A recent presentation to the Yale Alumni Association gives a good sense of the approach that he’s developed after eighteen years of experience working with dream clients: https://youtu.be/KFQCBU9U7ik Find him at kamenetz.com and thenaturaldream.com Twitter: @Jewinthelotus, Instagram: @rodgerkam, Tiktok: @kamenetz, FaceBook: Rodger.Kamenetz, YouTube: https://bit.ly/RodgerKYouTube Intro music is Water over Stones and outro music is Everything both by Mood Science. Hogwarts Live from the 40th Annual IASD Dream Conference

Why do we go to all the trouble and expense to come to a conference anyway? I ask six dreamers what they find here and the answers vary: family, inspiration, friendship, understanding, plus going to conference is like going to Hogwarts! My guests are Victoria Rabinowe, Curt Hoffman, Marcia Emery, and Bob Krumhansl in the first half, and Linda Schiller and Lauren Schneider (with a reprise from Victoria) in the second. The conversation ranges on from my original question and includes topics like why are dreamers considered airy fairy when my dreamer friends are the most grounded people I know? And, where do the images come from anyway? I apologize for rough audio in the first 30 minutes! Skip ahead if you want to, or take a listen all the way through. There is still time to register for the online portion of the conference at IASDconferences.org/2023 Intro music is Water over Stones and outro music is Everything both by Mood Science. Nightmares Demystified with Dr. Leslie Ellis

Nightmares: what’s their cause and cure? Our guest is clinician and dream demystifier, Dr. Leslie Ellis. Nightmares seem to be caused by anything upsetting whether in recent life or from long ago. Luckily, we don’t need to know what is causing a nightmare to work with it. Dreaming helps us metabolize emotions but nightmares can wake us up, interrupting the process. She describes a dream as a picture of our current or habitual nervous system condition (ala Eugene Gendlin). It can be helpful to rescript the dream or change the ending in an environment where we feel calm and safe. Dr. Ellis describes bias control and aspects of Stephen Porges’s polyvagal theory. BIO: Leslie Ellis is author of A Clinician’s Guide to Dream Therapy and offers online dreamwork certification to mental health professionals. Her experiential approach to engaging with dreams is based on focusing, an approach that privileges the body’s felt sense in the exploration of dreams. Developed by Eugene Gendlin, a focusing approach includes finding help in a dream and bias control. Leslie has expanded on this method to develop an embodied approach to treating nightmares, and recently published a paper in the journal Dreaming on nightmares and the nervous system.  Find our guest at: DrLeslieEllis.com Intro music is Water over Stones and outro music is Everything both by Mood Science.
