A New Kind of Hero’s Journey, Dream-Inspired Creativity with Author Donna Glee Williams
We all know that dreams can galvanize your creativity. Today we meet an author who has published three dream-inspired fantasy novels which seek to reimagine the hero’s journey. Author Donna Glee Williams, PhD is our guest and her latest book is called The Night Field. Plus music by Lynn Morgan Rosser.
Donna Glee describes her 17 year mentorship with Jeremy Taylor which began as an exploration of an ongoing dream theme of difficulty getting to water. She also speaks of dreams that are gifts for others and shares that she recently wrote a story based on another’s dream. When published it will have the dreamer as co-author.
She describes using dreams to inspire creativity by starting with the question, “If you were to do something to honor this dream, what would it be?” She then speaks about how her books embody a new kind of Hero’s Journey more appropriate for a post-patriarchal world than the traditional Joseph Campbell formulation, a new paradigm that gets away from individualism and invites co-heroes.
After the break we take a call from John of Santa Cruz who describes research showing that people who play music access different portions of their brain than those who don’t. Our engineer and music-creator Rick adds that music is a high-bandwidth form of transmitting nonverbal information.
We then take a call from Lynn Rosser of Asheville of North Carolina who has created music to go with Donna Glee’s new novel. We play part of the piece called Bridges. You can find Lynn at LynnMorganRosser.com and on Spotify and other platforms. Donna Glee suggests that listeners go to ko-fi.com/lynnmorganrosser to support her.
We then talking about using fantasy to address real-world issues including addressing problems with pesticides which are portrayed, but never explicitly mentioned, in The Night Field which emerged from her work with the Eco Tipping Points Project which can be found at EcoTippingPoints.org. Donna Glee ends by reading the opening paragraphs from her new novel.
BIO: When I first met Jeremy Taylor, I was already a writer but—other than my doctoral dissertation—I’d never written in any long form. During my 17 years of dreamwork with him, I wrote three novels seeded by dreams. His fingerprints are particularly bright on my latest, The Night Field.

A Seth-Inspired Alternative Sleep Schedule with David Cielak
Trouble sleeping through the night? Maybe you are on your way to a superior sleep schedule which could enhance your creativity, flexibility, and dream recall. We talk with David Cielak about what Seth has to say about sleep and dreaming.
Dave recommends five hours of sleep at night preceded by the important suggestion that upon awakening I will be refreshed and ready for the day. You are also encouraged to nap as needed.
This sleep schedule enhances dream recall and can lead to more lucid dreaming and was inspired by the writings of Jane Roberts who channeled the entity Seth. He recommends using the following incubation “As I sleep I will attract from inner reality the very best possible events in all areas of my life.”
The Seth materials suggest that our waking reality is determined by our choices in our dream state. Dreams help us change the beliefs that dictate our waking life behavior.
We get more personal after the break and Dave talks about how the book Seth Speaks literally fell off the shelf into his lap and changed his life. I share a dream about my recently deceased father which reveals my changing beliefs, and Max asks Dave to tell us about his understanding of the Australian aboriginal concept of the Dreamtime.
BIO: David has been playing with dreams since childhood, over 55 years! David migrated to Australia in 1990 and used dreams to help that decision and process along. A long term student of the Seth Materials since his early 20. “We create reality from the inside out using the dream state”. David has been practicing the Superior Alternative Sleep Schedule for the past few years.
Upcoming SethCenter.com courses: The Online Seth, Dream and Lucid Dreams Course runs November 15 to December 26th, and The Online Seth Intensive Course starts October 4.

What Dreams Have to Say about Reality with Tina Tau
Is waking life really a kind of theater which we make up along the way? The transformative potential of dreamwork, today with author and certified dreamworker, Tina Tau. Tina shares a dream in which she struggles to swim upstream, then suddenly stands up and realizes the water is not so deep. We speak about how this highlights that our understanding of what’s true in any moment, waking or sleeping, may be radically altered by our expectations.
She shares another dream in which she notices that a giant bird seems to be operated by wires like a puppet and asks, “Who is big enough to operate that puppet?” Tina describes how this dream opened up for her the realization that much of reality is staged like a play.
After the break, Gary from Oregon calls with a dream including three planetariums. We take a second call from Kristen from Virginia who shares a dream that is one of a series of dreams about her ex-partner. We finish with a few words about asking for dreams to help with the climate change crisis and a description of her recent book “Ask for Horses”.
BIO: Tina Tau is an adventurer, writer and dreamworker, living in Portland Oregon. She is the author of the recent memoir, Ask for Horses: Memoir of a Dream-Guided Life. She believes that dreams are a royal road to a great conversation, and a window into a richer version of reality.

Anima Dreams, Personal Neurobiology, and Hispanic Identity with John Valenzuela, PhD
An anima dream series and personal neurobiology. Also Dreams about love and, just in time for Hispanic heritage month, Mexican American male identity formation. A conversation with John Valenzuela, PhD.
John describes that the anima and animus figures we meet in our dreams are autonomous spiritual beings AND also parts of us and that the gender distinction is probably a cultural artifact. We talk about the distinction between when a dream figure is a someone we know from waking life vs a stranger. John describes a few dream from his own anima series and talks about the way dreams reveal our “personality landscape.” He talks about the nine domains of integration from the work of Dan Siegal and says that dreams are helping with this integration. Those oh-so-common dreams of trying to find something are probably our own brains in the process of integration.
We take a call from Rochelle from San Diego who shares a dream series about her teeth falling out while on a date. We end by talking about John’s research into dreams and identity formation in Mexican American males.
BIO: John Valenzuela, earned his Ph.D. from Pacifica Graduate Institute’s Clinical Psychology program. His dissertation Psyche’s Response to the Intersections of Cultural Complexes: Mexican American Male Identity Formation explores dreams and their symbolic connections to Aztec culture. His dream work explores the intersections between Jungian archetypes and neuroscience.

Artificial Intelligence, Yoga Nidra, and More with Joanna Kowalewska
Would you let a bot interpret your dreams? Should you? We speak with Joanna of Blue Lotus Queendom about the pleasures and pitfalls of using AI with dreams. Also what is Yoga Nidra and how does it support Dreamwork. Joanna gives many suggestions about how to use AI with our dreams but that list does NOT include asking the AI what your dream means. She urges us to trust our inner knowing instead. This leads to a conversation about the ethics of telling someone else what their dream means.
We switch to a discussion of yoga nidra. Joanna suggests that it can help us as dreamers in many ways including making us aware of different states of consciousness as well as possibly increasing dream recall
We take a call from Kristen from Virginia who shares a dream about black demons attacking Robin Williams few days before he killed himself. We then take a call from Wendy from Monterey who shares a dream suggesting that we can to learn to cooperate to influence the outcome of the future. Synchronistically, Wendy had met Robin Williams before the years of his fame and recognized that he was alienated from others even then.

Helplessness, Trauma, and Nightmares with Dr. Greg Mahr
Can we predict who will develop PTSD? Our guest, Dr. Greg Mahr, studies patients with acute trauma, and he discovered that their dreams in the days and weeks after their injury suggest who will recover fully and who will be mired in PTSD months later. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a condition that occurs after trauma marked by intense nightmares and increased risk of suicide, but only about 30% of those traumatized go on to develop PTSD. In Dr. Mahr’s acute trauma center in Detroit, he interviews victims of car accidents and assaults and asks about their dreams in the days immediately after the trauma and finds that experiences of helplessness in their dreams and during their trauma correlate with the development of PTSD.
After the traumatic event, nightmares tend to replicate the event exactly, but changes soon develop in those who recover in which the person finds some agency and the dreams eventually start to have happier endings. This mimics the process of IRT, Image Rehearsal Therapy, in which people can deliberately change their nightmares by imagining new versions of the troubling dreams.
Dr. Mahr speculates that one of the purposes of dreaming is to encourage us to talk about our traumas and that they help us develop a narrative about the event. We take a question from Amy about how to bring up the topic of nightmares with a doctor and end by talking about post-traumatic growth and the idea that dreams are messages from ourselves.
BIO: Greg Mahr MD is a psychiatrist, a teacher and a writer. He is director of Consultation Liaison Psychiatry at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and is on faculty at the Wayne State University School of Medicine. Dream work and Jungian depth psychology have been long standing passions for Greg, and at over 5000 dreams, he has one of the most extensive collection of personal dreams in the world.

Guiding Spirits Home with Jeanne Van Bronkhorst
Companioning the dying through lucid dreams. Our guest shares some of her experiences of psychopompic dreaming. Starting when she was 9 or 10 she would dream of being in a classroom where she learned how to change the dream. Several years later she describes her first experience of helping a dying person happened several years later when she found herself in a dream falling together with a woman who was terrified. She was able to slow their fall by dreaming up first n umbrella then a parachute letting the woman land softly in a place where friends were waiting to greet her.
She shares several such stories (including one in which she was awake but meditating) and says that in the liminal space between life and death, our dreaming muscles are essential when the physical world falls away. Jeanne describes some of the work of Allan Kellehear in his book Experiences Near Death: Beyond Medicine and Religion, saying that near death experiences vary across cultures, but the one thing in common is that the dying person is always being helped as they approach that threshold.
Rick shares a dream in which one of his beloved dogs is killed, and Max asks whether Jeanne feels prepared when she has these experiences of if she is just winging it. We muse over Tibetan Dream Yoga and the idea that we are more open to these liminal spaces when we are dreaming and marveling over the rich variety of metaphors for dying that people experience, and end by talking about how to enhance emotional connections with those who are dying.
Jeanne also appeared on the Dream Journal in August 2021. That conversation can be found here: https://ksqd.org/dreams-at-the-end-of-life-with-jeanne-van-bronkhorst/
BIO: Jeanne Van Bronkhorst, MA, MSW, worked with people in hospice care for ten years. Her interest in end-of-life care began in childhood, when she occasionally dreamed of helping people who were dying. Now she is on the board of the IASD, and writes books about end-of-life about end-of-life dreams and grief dreams.
