Dreaming and Enchantment with Writer Andy Couturier
My personal writing mentor, Andy Couturier, is helping me through the birth of my book about dreaming. Andy is also an avid dreamer in his own right, and he has lots of say about using dreams to deepen our enchantment and sense of magic in the world.
We start with Andy sharing an early childhood dream of bookcases full of presents which he thinks of as the gifts of life to come. He says that dreams are a welcome non-utilitarian part of my life and quotes from Thomas Moore’s book The Re-Enchantment of Everyday Life. We talk about the Abundance of Less by our guest and The Poetics of Space by Gaston Bachelard.
Andy recommends that we ask questions of our dreams without needing to answer them. He also shares some writing exercises from his book Writing Open the Mind designed to access the subconscious and describes the logistics of his self-organized dream group encouraging you, the listener, to set up one of your own.
We take a call from a widow in Aptos whose husband died three years ago. After an absence of three years, now he is starting to appear in her dreams. We also take a call from Elizabeth in Bellingham who says that her dreams are guiding her as she writes her memoir, and she ends by asking a provocative question about how we are each placed in time which inspires Andy to share one of his precognitive dreams.
Sign up for Andy’s contact list to stay in the loop about the new course he will offer later this summer called “Dreaming and Writing,” or to sign up for one of his Book Completion groups.
BIO: Mentor of hundreds of completed books and author of Writing Open the Mind and The Abundance of Less, Andy Couturier is a writing coach and an engaged dreamer. During waking hours he is also guiding Katherine’s book creation journey using innovative writing techniques that access subconscious processes. He walks the line between dreams and the waking subconscious, practicing an open-minded curiosity and amazement toward dreams, and he likes to welcome all the dream parts without making a story of them, but including them all and giving them all voice. He is developing a new course for this summer called “Dreaming and Writing.”

Dream Sharing and Empathy with Prof Mark Blagrove and Prof Julia Lockheart
Does dream sharing increase empathy and insight? Today meet two English professors who say, “Yes it does!” The Science and Art of Dreaming is their new book.
Mark starts out by talking about the innocence of dreams and how they tell the truth, even though we often can’t recognize it. Julia suggests we can look at dreams as our own art work. Together they describe their process in which Mark guides the discussion of a dream while Julia creates a drawing around the dream on pages torn from Frued’s famous book, The Interpretation of Dreams.
Mark describes his research which shows that (1) dream sharing increases empathy of group members and (2) people who are high in empathy are more attracted to dreamwork than those who are not. He also touches on human self-domestication and shares recent work suggesting that dream sharing might have been an important part of that process.
We take three callers. First John from Santa Cruz describes that he feels sensations in dreams like thorns prickling but not body blows. Steve Popp from the Garden Show then shares a dream about a hooded black cobra lying in square coils. Finally we take a call from Ray of Santa Cruz who dreamt of being chased by a giant bear at Stonehenge.
BIO: Mark Blagrove is Professor of Psychology and Director of the Sleep Laboratory at Swansea University, UK. He is a past-President of the International Association for the Study of Dreams. Julia Lockheart is Associate Professor at the Swansea College of Art, University of Wales Trinity St David, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society for Arts. Since 2016 they have undertaken public Ullman dream discussions, with Julia simultaneously painting each dream as part of their DreamsID.com collaboration. The collaboration has resulted in their 2023 book, The Science and Art of Dreaming, published by Routledge.

The Octopus Movement with Perry Knoppert
When are ADHD and dyslexia assets instead of handicaps? When you are an octopus! Our guest today is Dr. Octopus himself, Perry Knoppert.
We talk about about his nonlinear revolution called the Octopus Movement. Perry’s movement welcomes all out-of-the-box thinkers celebrating neurodiversity, multipotentiality and deep curiosity. We muse over how nonlinear dreams are, and Perry describes being nonlinear as like being on psychedelics all the time.
Perry and Katherine explore several of his recent dreams from different angles. Perry describes how he has been experimenting with not needing to understand his dreams but has been finding it valuable to carry them around with him during the day. He wonders if perhaps they are often dramatic because there are so many things that we are not paying attention to during the day. He urges listeners to join his revolution.
BIO: Perry Knoppert aka Dr. Octopus is a nonconformist, embodies the spirit of a life artist. Born in the free-spirited Netherlands, he sold lampshades with his father and experienced the diversity of the market. But Perry yearned for more and discovered the beauty of unexpected possibilities in Beijing, China. Embracing his ADHD energy, dyslexic learning style, and multi-tasking brain, Perry founded The Octopus Movement, a mycelium of nonlinear thinkers. The platform empowers out-of-the-box thinkers to unleash their unique talents and shape the world with their artful approach to life. Perry is a visionary, a trailblazer, and a true-life artist.

Tzivia offers online workshops including a first-Tuesday-of-the-month “Dreaming on the Page” writing circle. She will be presenting a “Lucid on the Page” version of this workshop live at the IASD conference in Ashland OR June 17-22 which you can learn about at asdreams.org.
