159: Leadership + Communication Quick Copy Hack [ConnectingSD Edition] with AnnMarie Rose, Sarah Hancock, Jessica M. Powers, and Stephanie Andrews

Quick copy and business leadership tip for you today...plus a behind-the-scenes recording! First, the Backstory… Last year in January of 2018, I started a group of entrepreneurs meeting about every other week in San Diego for coffee to get to know each other and be open to collaborations. I called it "Connecting SD." There was never any firm agenda, though the times we had 10 or more people come, I did have to add in more structure so everyone could get to know one another! The idea was simple: connection I love living in San Diego and there are so many biz-minded people here, so why not do a better job connecting with them? Plus, I wanted to step up more as a leader, so I thought that starting my own group would be a great idea! And it has been. Some of the bestselling author clients you have heard on the podcast this past year have come from that group. • I never sold. • I never pitched. • I never pushed. I just got to know people and they got to know me. They saw me as a leader and witnessed my consistently in showing up to facilitate a meeting that brought them value...so working with me when they were ready to do a book was a non-sale, a no brainer! But aside from business growth and thought leadership expansion...what 'copy related' benefit has the group had? Copy Hack The copy benefit has come, not just for me as the leader but for every single participant! For us all! 1. Each time we meet we share what we do with the group (and usually individually to others as people trickle in). This is great practice saying aloud what you do and getting immediate feedback on if it's clear or interesting 2. Many meetings we write things out like our 'one sentence of what we do' or 3 bullet points of our 'ideal audience.' This helps us clarify who we are and who we serve These two things alone have helped me, and many attendees have told me it helps them too, in both how they speak with people and how they write their copy for their websites, landing pages, social media, and more. Humans need repetition to work things out. I am constantly testing and refining my copy and what I say in my introductions with people to see what works. Don't expect instant perfection...it's a constant evolution! One Copy Tip And to boil down a tip for you: Use in-person networking events or meetups as a place to practice your concise 'elevator pitch' or 'hook' and watch the reactions of people on their face, in their body language, and with what they do and say after. It's great market research to improve your copy and communications! Now, a Behind-the-Scenes Recording At a recent get together of Connecting SD we were 5 gals who turned up on January 4th on the first Friday of the new year (2019). For fun, I plugged in my mic (I use an ATR2100 + foam pop filter that you can get on Amazon for about $60-$70) and recorded us each going around and introducing ourselves, businesses, and 2019 goals to the group. It was great practice for all of us to speak it into a microphone...and I thought it would be fun for you as a listener of the Copy That Pops podcast to meet 4 new female entrepreneurs! So, here is a short clip...we wish you had been there! Special Guests! 157: Wins from 2018 + Goals for 2019 for Us Copy Poppers

Popping in with you this week just to: Wish you a happy start to 2019 (done and done!) Share a win from 2018 (and invite you to share with me too) Share plans for 2019 (and invite you to share your feedback with me also) 1: Happy New Year, my copy poppers! Okay, so, we already got item #1 complete. Hope 2019 is the best year ever for you! Now let's talk about #2! 2: Share my wins from 2018 (and invite you to share with me too) My New Year's Eve was fabulous. I got together with some of my neighbors and friends. 6 of us were entrepreneurs and 2 were not, but are significant others of us crazy biz peeps (1 of which is my husband Devin). Just before the clock struck midnight, we 8 stood around the fire (in our neighbor's outdoor fire pit), drank adult beverages, and shared one of our favorite moments or wins from the past year. What did I share? Well, for me, I've run away from public speaking nearly my entire life. I remember distinctly a few instances from my childhood where I had to present, was terrified, did horribly, and swore I never wanted to do it again. That carried over into my adult life. And if you know my story, you know I used to teach high school math and psychology. That is public speaking, of sorts. The first day I had to teach, it was during my student teaching program and I had to teach the unit circle to a group of 17 and 18 year old seniors in and honors pre-calculus course. I was like 24 or 25 myself, so not that much older. And I was mortified. We used to use those overhead projectors where you write on a transparent film and it shows on the wall behind you. Well, as I started my lesson, I noticed that the entire projector and resulting projection on the wall was shaking nonstop. Was there an earthquake? Nope...it was my freaking hand. I couldn't stop it from shaking. And I felt even more embarrassed because I knew that everyone knew I was so nervous. It was painful. But, my desire to become a teacher was just slightly higher than my mortification from sucking at it...so I persisted. By my second year of teaching, I started to really find my stride and grew to love it. It was actually fun to perform the lessons, as I call it, and get teenagers to actually care about and enjoy mathematics. I had many, many students tell me that they hated math until they took my class….that they hated all math teachers until they met me. That was so fulfilling to hear. But after teaching about 5 years, I felt like I had 'mastered' it and wanted a new challenge. I wanted to be an entrepreneur and the internet had matured more, so it was a lot more feasible than it was prior. The year was 2011. I quit teaching fulltime to make the jump. And I worked on many different businesses until I found some real footing in my current one...in the Copy That Pops world….where I now focus on helping other entrepreneurs to do three things:1. Write a great book that shows off their expertise Self-publish their book as a bestseller on Amazon3. Leverage their books to grow their brand and businesses I'm toying with some branding in 2019 around "Author Leadership," but I'm getting ahead of myself. To wrap up my item #2 around my win for 2018...let's get back to public speaking. After mastering speaking to 30 teenagers trapped in a classroom all year, I didn't think that skill translated to doing well on stage in front of business people. So, I started hiding and running away from speaking to larger than just a few people at a time...for many years, yet again. In June of 2011, when I jumped into the business world, I had just turned 30 (my bday is June 6th, fyi). This past year in 2018, I decided to get over this 'fear of speaking' once and for all. It started in January and in June I turned 37. So, for about 6.5 years I hid from it yet again. So happy that in 2018, I changed my story...and it's helping take my business to the next level. But, the win I shared around the fire just before the clock struck midnight was that I not only spoke on stage as much as I could this past year, I also spoke on stage on three different continents: North America, Europe, and Australia. That sounds pretty bad ass. :-P And, this is just the beginning… I believe that being an published author gives you leadership credibility instantly. Speaking on stage is the next level too...and being an author helps you get more speaking gigs and get paid more for the paid gigs you book too. So, that is a big win for me. If you are terrified of speaking on stage, you are not alone. But if I can get over it and learn to love it -- something for 36 years I swore was impossible -- then you can too. ACTION STEP:Please share with me a win of yours from 2018! I'd love to hear it! Post it on social media and tag me @LaptopLaura or send me a private message or email! (I'm at Laura@copythatpops.com for email). Would love to hear something you are proud of achieving this year! #3: Share some of my plans for 2019 (and invite you to share your feedback with me also) Plans….my goal for 2019 is several fold. I want to scale my business up. And I want to take on fewer private clients so I can focus on growing my group programs and courses, which I really believe in and see my way to help more people, even those who can't afford tens of thousands for private work with me. I also want to scale more ONE-TO-MANY versus one-to-one so I have more time available for me to do what I love most in business:- speak on stage- organize events that bring people together If you remember one of my podcast episodes from last January, episode 107 titled: Your ONE Word Quick Copy Tip [CONNECTION Edition] (copythatpops.com/107), you'll know that at my CORE, what makes me happiest in life and always has, ever since I was little, is "connection."I love feeling connected with others and connecting people with one another. I feel I can best do that via:- my group coaching programs and masterminds around books and author leadership - speaking on stage to bigger and bigger crowds- attending and organizing events ACTION STEP:Please share with me feedback for me on how I can serve you best in 2019! I'd love to hear what I can do to make you feel more connected with others while also accomplishing your business goals. Post it on social media and tag me @LaptopLaura or send me a private message or email! (I'm at Laura@copythatpops.com for email). Would love to hear your feedback. I appreciate your listenership and value your opinion.

156: Marketing Your Books to Parents AND Kids with Podcasts, Live Events, and Collaborations from Children's Book Author and Podcaster Angela Ferrari

If you have two diverse markets that you need to reach with your copy and branding efforts, then this is a great podcast episode for you! Artist, podcaster, and children's book author Angela Ferrari reveals her tried and true tactics to sell more books, build a tribe of raving fans (including both young kids and parents), and grow her business network. A Few Highlights and Mentions:- How Angela got into storytelling for kids - How to write a story that connects with kids and adults - Make your message more clear, simple, and impactful! - Does Angela still think you should publish on Kindle if you do a children's book? - She Podcasts group on Facebook - How to use podcast marketing, live events, and collaboration to grow whatever you are working on! Notes from Angela: - Podcast Marketing: I launched my children's story podcast in tandem with releasing my first three books. I wanted to get my name out there as a storyteller and promote my books. Podcasting has been a great way to get the word out because I am giving value to my audience. I feel like I really get to be my authentic self in this form of marketing. Anyone can listen for free, it allows me to demonstrate my creativity and build a real relationship with my listeners. - Live Events: I have also had great experiences doing live events. Even though the audience is smaller compared to online marketing, I build a stronger connection with the children and their parents and teachers when I meet them in person. They are way more likely to talk about a live event and share my work with their friends. Many parents also make posts about the storytelling event on their social media. - Collaboration: This has been a recent pilar in my marketing strategy going into season 2 ofStory Spectacular. Before I originally launched my storytelling business, I was very intimidated by other successful children's authors and podcasters. It's easy to feel like you can't measure up and fall into this comparison trap. But after reaching out and making connections with others in my field, I have realized that there is room for all of us! Everyone has their own unique artistry that they bring to the table and many of the storytellers I have encountered are happy to connect/collaborate. I am working with several other children's podcasters, guesting on their shows and having them on my show. This has been such a wonderful experience because it gives us all an opportunity to share our creative strengths with each other's audiences. Angela's Books - Digger's Daily Routine - An Extraordinary Book - What Do You See? - The Shape Escape - Lawrence the Lighthouse Our Guest Angela Ferrari is an artist and children's book author and illustrator based in Portland, Maine. She is the creator and host of the Story Spectacular podcast which features original stories and classic retellings. Angela grew up in the mountains of western Maine. Living in a rural setting, she developed a talent for finding creative ways to play and captivate her imagination. After graduating with a BA in studio art from The University of Maine, Angela moved to Portland. She was accepted into the Assets for Artists program which focused on business finance for creative entrepreneurs. After completing the required training, Angela received matching grant funds for working capital. She then became a successful painter. She has since expanded her artistic endeavors, writing and illustrating five children's book. BONUS FOR AUTHORS: In addition to storyspectacular.com, Angela has a blog called childrensbookwritersguide.com which contains everything she WISHES she had known about writing and publishing children's books. Great Quotes from the Podcast Episode "That's the power of children's books. You can convey these really powerful, big messages in such a simple form." - Angela Ferrari "It's a great time to be a self-published author!" - Angela Ferrari "The more places your book is available, the better." - Angela Ferrari "The price point that Kindle and ebooks offer is a great way for people to test the waters and check you out as an author before they commit to the paperback." - Angela Ferrari "I love podcasting so much. I was a huge fan of it even before I got started." - Angela Ferrari "I waited to launch the first three books the same day I launched my podcast, so it was all under one big brand umbrella of 'Story Spectacular.'" - Angela Ferrari "It's important to share each other's work because people crave new, fresh content. It's a win-win for everybody." - Angela Ferrari "I found a critique group in my area...that was a really good 'dip your toe in.'" - Angela Ferrari "Tell people why you want to connect with them and what it is about their work you're responding to." - Angela Ferrari

OKAY, SO HERE'S THAT QUICK TIP FOR YOU I learned this from Jared Warner, who is on my Wall of Fame as bestselling book success story #17! He's a marketing guy and taught this to me for paid ads. But, it's application is far broader reaching, so I wanted to share it with you! Word It Outhttps://worditout.com/ What this does is turn text into world clouds. Here's how I suggest you use it step by step in addition to making cool looking word clouds you could share on social media or your website.Let's use it for copy and knowing what our audience actually wants! Step 1: Pull up a popular book in Amazon around topics relevant to your business (whether you are writing a book, doing a podcast episode, writing a blog, or coming up with web or ad copy...doesn't matter) Step 2: Expand the reviews of the book, select them all, and hit 'copy' -- now, you may want to do this twice...once for 4 and 5 star reviews, and once for 1-3 star reviews. Step 3: Head over to Word It Out and click "Create" at the top. Step 4: Paste the text into the box that says "original text" and then the green button that says "generate" Step 5: Now you have a visual representation of the words used in the reviews! You'll need to clean it up a little. For example, the author's name doesn't help you. Or even "book" may be unhelpful since we got this from book reviews and they are referring to the book they read. Just click on "Word list" and you can exclude words that do not make sense. Another example here would be "Kindle" or "about." Step 6: Click the blue "regenerate" button to see the words updated Step 7: Save this if you don't want to lose it and look for words that are trends that you could make sure to incorporate in your writing all over the web! Once you play around with it for a bit and start thinking about it as a way to do market research, the application is unlimited for us with our brands and businesses online! Try it out and let me know what new insights it gives you! ----------- One last note before I sign off! One of my BESTSELLERATOR group program clients is going live with her book on Wednesday the 12th! 12/12/18 Kathy Dale with her book: Sacred Wisdom of Healing: A Practical Guide to Love, Happiness & Healing which you can buy on Amazon for just $0.99 at https://www.copythatpops.com/kathy If all goes well, she'll be case study #27 for bestsellers!
