#55: Is the Pandemic Over?
Today we talk about Omicron taking over as the dominant strain around the world and the future of Covid. Omicron is much more contagious, seems to be much less dangerous and mitigation strategies have not worked. The world has gone MAD focusing on vaccine status instead of what is happening with infections, illness and hospitalization/deaths. Could Omicron be the golden ticket that is turning this pandemic into an “endemic”? Join our banter! PS: Check out Travis Luttmer at Country Financial (click here) for your insurance needs! #52: Eat Sh$t and Live! With Dr. Hazan
You’ve heard all the jokes- what’s your poo telling you?, eat sh&t and die, you’re full of sh&t. Today we are going in deep and discussing how “eating” poo can actually save people! ( no they don’t really have to eat it, but it makes a great title!) Fecal microbiota transplant ( FMT) aka a stool transplant, is the process of transferring stool from a healthy patient into another individual. Currently in the USA, the only FDA approved use of this treatment is for C. difficile infections. It has been used experimentally to treat other GI diseases such as IBS, colitis, and even some neurological conditions like MS, Parkinsons and even autism. What is even more amazing, is that the 10,000 plus species of microorganisms in the GI tract make up a unique “microbiome” in each individual. There is huge diversity in the gut microbiome depending on diet, genetics, environment and overall health of the individual. Research is exploring the potential curative role of gut bacteria in various diseases. Our guest expert on this subject is Dr. Sabine Hazan, a Gastroenterologist and scientific researcher in the subject of FMT. She launched ProgenaBiome, a genetic sequencing research company dedicated to understanding the gut flora at the clinical level. Her book, “Let’s Talk Sh&t” is a fun, informative read for clinicians to lay people. The first woman ever accepted into the University of Florida as a Clinical Gastroenterology Fellow, Dr. Sabine Hazan is a pioneer in the medical field. Board certified in Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Internal Medicine, Dr. Hazan has published articles in numerous prestigious medical journals, including theJournal of Duval County Medical Association and Gastroenterology, and won several awards, such as the Best Fellow Scientific Presentation and Dean’s Research Award awarded by University of Florida. In addition, Dr. Sabine Hazan is an acclaimed speaker and presented symposiums for influential medical organizations like the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Astra Merk, Inc. #51: Christmas Bizarre
Merry Christmas and cheers to the last Doctales of the year! We’ve got a great festive nog recipe and a lineup of stories of Christmas hazards. Singing tree crashes, and tinsel in kittens. Falls from the rooftop and 40 below shut ins. These are a few of our non- favorite things. Enjoy a mixture of our own childhood experiences, medical maladies and a few tales we have heard. Try out this Eggnog Martini: 2.5 parts eggnog 1 part Kahlua 1 part vanilla vodka Stir or shake over ice. #50: Non Clinical Careers for Physicians
What CAN a physician do other than prescribe your medications, perform exams on every orifice you have and cut and paste you back together with knives, nukes and robotics? Guess what? There is a whole world of other career options out there for those who are looking for a complete career change or just starting a new side gig. Dr. John Jurica joins us today to give us an overview of the options. I think he must have heard them all! He is a board-certified family physician who began doing nonclinical side jobs early in his career as UM physician advisor and occupational medicine medical director. In 2017, John started producing the weekly Physician Nonclinical Careers Podcast, where he presents interviews with physician entrepreneurs, medical directors, hospital executives, managers, coaches and other experts in physician career transition. His podcast was listed as a Feedspot Top 20 Physicians Podcasts You Must Follow in 2020 and 2021. In 2018, he created the Nonclinical Career Academy MemberClub (nonclinicalphysicians.com/joinnca), an online membership site with video courses designed to help physicians accelerate their career pivots. John and Dr. Tom Davis recently launched NewScript, an online community of healthcare professionals, career transition mentors, and wellness specialists helping each other live a better life. It is a private, uncensored, and ad-free space that incorporates a forum, daily posts, mentorship programs, online courses, livestream events and interviews with clinicians who have transitioned to a nontraditional career. #49: Omicron: Molly Hatchet OR Muller’s Ratchet?
The big “O” variant is upon us, May’s got Covid and we repurposed a livestream! Here comes Omicron. What does this mean for the winter, for your family, your job, your health, your mask supply? There has been a lot of panic pushed by the media over this new variant. So what’s the truth? Is it Molly Hatchet and we’re “flirtin’ with disaster”? Maybe it’s Muller’s Ratchet- where organisms accrue so many deleterious mutations that they push themselves into extinction. Or….. a whole pile of options in between. We give our opinions and interpretation of the emerging data with the underlying theme among experts being ,nobody currently knows where this is going to go. Plus we are trying something new! We repurposed a FaceBook live episode for this show, so it’s definitely got a raw/interactive vibe to it. Let us know how you like it! Sponsor: Our sponsor this month is Locumstory. #48: Medical Unions
Go big or go home… this is an in depth look at a rising trend in the healthcare workforce. What do you know about healthcare unions? Do you think of pickets and healthcare providers demanding more money? Did you even know they existed? With the continuous corporatization of American healthcare, physicians have been losing their voice, power and have not figured out a successful way to keep their power in advocating for the patients best interest. As I have often told patients, I feel like I have as much power as the Walmart checker does in their corporation. Our guest today is Joe Crane. A longtime member of the labor movement and union organizer of nearly two decades, he helps doctors reclaim their profession as the Doctors Council's National Organizing Director. Joe has been working with and organizing doctors for over four years. Most notably, he successfully negotiated several physician collective bargaining agreements and took a group of physicians on the picket line in Washington state's first ever physician strike. The Doctors Council is the country's oldest and largest union of attending physicians. With members spanning four states and both public and private sector workplaces, the Doctors Council is proud to be a united voice for doctors, their patients, and the communities they serve. It’s time to take back the medical profession and revamp healthcare, putting the patient’s best interest first. While we are not suggesting unions are THE single answer, it certainly looks like a positive piece of the puzzle to making our voices heard. Resources: Reach out to Joe anytime! #47: Doctales with Cocktails and Turkey
Happy Thanksgiving! We hope you are enjoying the holiday weekend, giving thanks and staying safe. We also hope you are avoiding the big holiday medical horrors that are common at this time of year. Stop freaking out about Covid this weekend, it’s still more likely that an auto accident will occur than the attack of the spike proteins. Don’t let football or family get your blood boiling, or your heart stopping. Avoid the ER from flying knives, boiling gravy and dirty birds that breed Salmonella! We’ll tell you how NOT to cook a wild turkey ( since we’ve done it) and tell you what foods might be a health hazard. We have a special cocktail this week and surprisingly it’s not Vodka and Cran! I’m sharing the recipe below. Most of all we are thankful for YOU, our listeners, fans and guests that make this wild and crazy ride of a show all possible. Cheers and don’t get too stuffed! Cocktail: Apple Cider Moscow Mule: 2 oz Ginger Beer 1.5 oz Vodka ( we used Chopin) 2 oz Pressed Apple Cider 05. Oz Lime juice fresh squeezed Ice, Cinnamon stick -squeeze lime into a frosted moscow mule mug, add desired ice, add liquid ingredients, stir with cinnamon stick and then toss into cup! Enjoy!
