#45: Cancer, Recovery and Redemption

How would you react if you were diagnosed with cancer? Unless you have been there, it’s difficult to imagine. Today’s guest, Rick Dancer,  relives this trip with us. He graciously takes us through his diagnosis, fears and questions he had in deciding what treatment would be right for him. Rick did a lot of research, not “settling” for a medical plan that would leave him with an outcome he found unacceptable.   During our interview it becomes apparent that he didn’t expect how this life changing diagnosis would ultimately impact his life in such a positive way.  About Rick Dancer: Rick is a journalist and visual storyteller. He spent 25 years reporting and anchoring the news in the Pacific Northwest. Today, he continues the art of mixing video and interviews producing a live “Get Real with Rick Dancer” nightly production. He and his wife travel the Pacific Northwest bringing viewers the backstories that rarely get told. Hey! #44: The Original “C” Word

What killed 600 K men and women in 2020?  Nope not Covid. Even in 2020, the second leading cause of death behind heart disease is Cancer.  Sadly everyone has forgotten about the original C word. With the pandemic, Cancer screenings plummeted and people have lost focus on their true health risks.  While breast cancer is the most common cancer in women and prostate cancer is the most common in men, the number one cancer killer is still lung cancer. Most people don’t even know that there IS screening available & recommended for those at high risk. Today we cover the current and updated cancer screening recommendations & summarize the gold standard recommendations from the USPSTF ( US Preventive Services Task Force) While the pandemic may have you concerned, don’t let it distract you from prioritizing your health. Do your cancer screenings! #42: Fight for Your Right….Vaccine Exemptions, Mandates and Accommodations)

With the recent mandates for vaccine requirements at various places of employment around the country, deadlines are looming for employees to show proof of Covid vaccination.  We have been bombarded with questions regarding medical exemptions for those who truly should not receive the  vaccine, those who have a medical reason NOT to get it as well as what qualifies as a “religious accommodation”. How does one apply, what forms do you need, who fills it out? What happens if your employer refuses to  “accept” your physician letter and you are given your “walking papers’ instead? Our guest today, Alan Thayer of Innovative Law Group ThinkILG.com), is here to address all that and more.   He clarifies the importance of the use of the term “religious accommodation” and 6 Key tips if terminated: 1 — DO NOT QUIT!   2 — Challenge adverse determination (consider a letter from a lawyer).    3 — File for unemployment (religious discrimination & failure to accommodate).    4 — File state civil rights complaint against employer (religious discrimination & failure to accommodate). Contact BOLI ( Bureau of Labour and Industry)   5 — File federal civil rights complaint (EEOC) against employer (religious discrimination & failure to accommodate).    6 — Watch court decisions for claims by employees against employers based on federal religious accommodation laws. Yes there ARE times like this when lawyers can be your best friend! #41: Mind Your Mental Health

This episode is in honor of World Mental Health Day (and because my bestie k.d asked a long time ago for this) It’s really hard to do justice to a topic in 40 minutes that is so vast and layered.  The mental health crisis in the US has fallen on deaf ears for years.  Now with Covid bringing emotional stress, healthcare burnout, social isolation, disruption of societal norms- well it’s no wonder the whole world hasn’t literally gone mad. We are here to tell you we get it, you’re not alone, it gets better. Both of us have been through some very dark times. We understand the dark days, real depression, PPD, S.A.D. But we want to remind everyone that as life brings you it’s crappiest moments, going through a rough patch emotionally does not mean you have a disorder.  We give you some practical tips for finding the light at the end of the tunnel- I personally create my light with Verilux! It’s a game changer  that boosts my mood ANYTIME of the year. Finally, if you or someone you are concerned about is showing serious signs, symptoms and needs professional help- do NOT hesitate in getting immediate attention. Better and brighter days are possible!  Oh and.cheers for National PA Week! Sponsor: Our sponsor this week is Locumstory. #40: Covid Vaccine & Kids part 2: with Dr. Paul Alexander

This week Tim flies solo. May is gone so Tim has lost his wingman or wing woman (for political correctness).  Tim interviews Dr Paul Alexander, former member of the US Covid Task Force and advisor to the WHO, among many other roles. He has a PhD in evidenced based medicine and quotes studies faster than most of us can breathe. Paul makes a very compelling evidence  based argument that children should be treated as “already being vaccinated”. We dive deep into the data on children and covid, vaccine efficacy and what the vaccine has accomplished to this point.  It was an honor to interview Dr Alexander again and dig into the data. You can taste his passion for protecting children and getting life back to normal. We even get a hint of what it was like to work as an insider in DC at the beginning of the pandemic.  Sponsor: Our sponsor this week is Weatherby!  Perfect timing to head to  www.financialresidency.com/weatherby for a streamlined locum tenens experience. Whether you’re new to locums or a pro, Weatherby is here to get you where you want to go.  References:  Dr. Paul Alexander: https://www.aier.org/staffs/paul-e-alexander/    Our guest this week is Dr. Paul Alexander. He received his bachelor’s degree in epidemiology from Toronto, Ontario, a master’s degree from Oxford University, and a PhD from McMaster University’s Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact. He has also studied at Johns’ Hopkins University. He has studied bioterrorism, advised the Canadian Government and also worked with WHO in 2008 until recently.  From 2017 until December 2019, Alexander was employed by the Washington, D.C.-based Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), where he specialized in systematic reviews. At IDSA, Alexander worked on several clinical practice guidelines. He served  in an advisory role  with Health and Human Services (HHS) under President Trump in 2020. He has been published in numerous peer reviewed journals throughout his career.   Our Advice! Everything in this podcast is for educational purposes only. #39: Follow the Science to Hell

What does it really mean when we say follow the science? Believe it or not, this week is a Doctales with Cocktails episode- albeit a more sobering discussion over a fine, local whiskey. What a perfect episode to ponder over a tumbler of.                Blue Line Unapologetic American Whiskey! This week we discuss some historical things done in the name of science. Specifically we dive into Eugenics, the science of “the day” for over 50 years. It became accepted by the scientific community and world elites, intellectuals and political leaders including Alexander Graham Bell, Winston Churchill, John Maynard Keynes, and Woodrow Wilson, to more notably Margaret Sanger and Adolf Hitler. The concept born in the late 1800’s believed that  selective breeding of humans would breed away undesirable traits that contributed to a weaker, unhealthy society:  feeblemindedness, criminality, birth defects and mental health issues for example. If you were in the  ‘ELITE’ crowd, you were a Eugenicist.  Fast forward to current societal and scientific struggles. What concepts or “group think” exist? Is following “the science” today’s pandemic the same thing? What about the labels associated with being anti/ pro vax, anti/pro climate change? We contend that while there are often many scientific truths and facts in these principles, we can get caught up in the debate without removing our own bias. What happens next is “the science” becomes political, and for many their politics is a natural  extension into becoming their religion.  Is Covid all about science or “scientism”? We believe there should be healthy debate which means allowing scientists to challenge one another to reach the truth. Shutting down opposing views and censorship only pushes the agenda of unilateral thinking.  Ultimately those who only listen to one side are believers in dogma, not science. I definitely will drink to that!  Cheers! Sponsor: Our sponsor this week is Deputy! You can use Deputy on any device, on the go. #38: A Frontline Warrior Story (Life in the ICU)

The most underrated frontline warriors in the Covid-19 fight are the ICU nurses. I’m super excited for you to hear from my sister, Heather Burgess. She has a 10 year career as a Critical Care RN and has been front and central since the pandemic began. She lives in Canada and chats with us today about the Canadian Covid experience.  While the patient is fighting for their life, the nurses are there 24/7, 365. More recently they have been denied any vacation time, are doubled up with responsibility and are sharing the emotional stress with patients, families and colleagues. Now into the second year of this pandemic, many of them are reaching their breaking point. This is happening all around the world, not just Canada.  I’m excited you finally get to hear “a nurse’s story” !  Heather is very humble in this interview - the nurses acting as advocates for their unconscious patients, the emotional abuse they sustain from grieving family members, the frequent need to change care plans depending on which Intensivist is leading the team. Covid is truly a war they are fighting, with emotional and physical consequences from the workplace.  We omit the politics and Tim tries to restrain himself in the vaccine debate! Join us for  the Canadian Covid experience.
