Episode 16 - From Military Intelligence to Anti-Fraud Leader with Matt Vega at Instacart

Most digital fraud fighters gained their career and experience by accident, growing along with the e-commerce brand they work for while gaining experience. Matt Vega, recent head of Fraud Strategy for Instacart, as well as for BlueSnap Payments, built his career experience intentionally, with some of the best training in the world. -Courtesy, of the US Army.   Matt will share (what he can) about why he chose to join the Army & specialize in "signal intelligence", why a 3 letter agency cares so much about counter- online fraud and how he has transferred that experience to the private sector in his previous role for a top online travel company, and now the fastest-growing grocery delivery company in the US.   To connect with or reach out to Matt: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mvintel/   There are a lot of great interviews & topics that will be discussed on the Fraudology podcast in 2021! Episode 13 - Why 2020 Has Been the Year of Online Fraud (w/ Eli Dominitz, Q6 Cyber)

Most fraud departments for Fortune 500 e-commerce companies are seeing a steep rise in fraud chargebacks and customer contacts reporting account takeovers and stolen cards. And when it reaches these points, that means the systems & processes being relied on aren't catching everything. Eli Dominitz, the CEO of Q6 Cyber joins the Fraudology podcast to explain what technology, processes, and methods are being used by organized cybercrime to circumvent fraud prevention guardrails that have become standard for identifying fraudulent purchases and behavior over the last few years. And, they talk about some* of what can be done to identify these methods going forward (Not all prevention strategies can/should be shared on a public forum, of course). If you have noticed an increase in difficult-to-detect account takeovers or re-shipping fraud, or have noticed other new fraud behavior, this episode can't be missed! And, if you haven't yet noticed this, you should know what to look out for as these methods grow like wildfire, and will soon be impacting small to medium-sized companies next! Episode 11 - Confessions of a Fraud Fighting "Legend" - Part 1

The universe has spoken to me over and over and it is time to get personal. In today's episode, I share a little good, some bad, and a lot of ugly truths I had to go through in my fraud-fighting journey. Although I have a lot of apprehension about recording this episode, if it helps one person feel like they are not alone in their fraud-fighting journey then it is worth it.

Episode 9 - Scam Busting w/ Shannon Slaughter (Meritrust Credit Union)

We hear about scams often. But, not often enough since they keep happening and consumers continue to be victimized by creative & convincing scammers. On today's podcast, we learn from a fraud-fighter on the front lines, who often speaks to victims of scam/consumer-targeted fraud. Shannon Slaughter is the enterprise fraud manager at Merit Trust Credit Union, a member-focused financial institution based in Kansas, US. In the last several months, most likely due to the financial hardships caused by the impacts of Covid-19, she's seen a sharp increase in consumers falling victim to creative scams. Because there's little that a consumer can do after losing money to a fraudster over the phone or email, Shannon has become passionate about educating others about these threats to consumers financially.  In this episode, she'll discuss why fraudsters are impersonating fraud teams for well-known companies, how they're targeting unassuming mules for unemployment and PPP fraud (in the US), and unique details about scam calls targeting consumers to get them to purchase large dollar amounts of gift cards to "pay off a debt to the government".  Subscribe to Fraudology to be alerted when new episodes are out, and if you enjoyed this episode, please rate & review this show to help others discover it.
