Police in Raleigh, North Carolina say the suspect in a brazen series of killings is just 15 years old. 10/13: Alex Jones ordered to pay nearly $1 billion to Sandy Hook families. New report shows the economy continues to suffer from high inflation.
A jury determined the radio talk show host and conspiracy theorist, Alex Jones, must pay nearly $1 billion in damages to the families of Sandy Hook shooting victims. Jones repeatedly called the school massacre "a hoax" on the air. Last year, a judge found him liable of defamation by default after he failed to produce documents demanded in the lawsuit. Now to the House select committee investigating the January 6th assault on the Capitol which will hold its last planned public hearing in just a few hours. Committee members say they will share never-before-seen images and revelations about the attack and new information about former President Trump's role in a plot to overturn the election results. Russia launched new attacks against the Kyiv region overnight and shelled a key city in the south of the country. They are the latest in a series of strikes that began with a wave of missile and drone attacks Monday. The Los Angeles city councilor who ignited widespread outrage with racist remarks, caught on tape, has resigned under heavy pressure. Two other councilors, heard on the same tape, are ignoring calls to step down. New fallout from the death of a Navy seal candidate, Kyle Mullen, who died in February of acute pneumonia just hours after completing the infamous "Hell Week," which is known for pushing trainees to their limits. Three Navy officers have been disciplined for overseeing training that resulted in Mullen's death. Breaking news, a new report showing the economy continues to suffer from stubbornly high inflation. The news, a short time ago, led to a sharp decline on Wall Street after the opening bell. Economists are concerned about the underlying rate of inflation which could force the Federal Reserve to hike interest rates even more in the coming months. Two weeks after Hurricane Ian hit Florida, the broken bridge to Sanibel Island has been fixed, and power crews are on the island. A new report says Ian was the 15th billion-dollar disaster in the U.S. this year.

New comments from President Biden on the war in Ukraine and his approach to dealing with Vladimir Putin following this week's deadly Russian airstrikes. The mother of one of Senate Candidate Herschel Walker's children tells The Washington Post she had to push Walker to pay for an abortion he wanted her to have in 2009. The Republican candidate, who says he's anti-abortion, campaigned yesterday with two top Senate Republicans. Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman, a Democratic Candidate in another close Senate race, in Pennsylvania, just gave his first in-person, on-camera interview since having a stroke five months ago. Fetterman showed NBC News how he uses closed captioning to read questions in real-time, to overcome the physical effects of his stroke. Growing outrage in Los Angeles over racist comments made during a meeting of city councilmembers, and caught on tape. Demonstrators flooded City Hall last night and disrupted a City Council meeting to call for the resignations of the three officials involved in that conversation. We are mourning the loss of a legendary performer, Dame Angela Lansbury. Lansbury died just five days shy of her 97th birthday.

10/11: Russia hammers Ukraine with missiles for 2nd day. Multiple LA city council members are recorded making racist comments.
Multiple cities in Ukraine have been hit today, after dozens of missiles and drones were launched from Russia yesterday, with targets all across the country. Many hit neighborhoods full of civilians during rush hour. The Ukrainian government says at least 19 people were killed by the first round of strikes, and more than a hundred injured. In Atlanta, Senate candidate Herschel Walker gets help today from two Republican senators. A Senate debate in Ohio got heated last night, with Republican J.D. Vance and Democrat Tim Ryan both on the attack. In Los Angeles, the big political issue right now is a blockbuster tape recording that could force three city councilors to resign. Nury Martinez has already stepped down as president of the LA City Council and apologized for making profane and racist statements on that tape. The City Council will meet today for the first time since the recording was made public. The death toll in Florida is now up to 129 people from Hurricane Ian, and many people who survived are struggling to clean up after catastrophic damage. Officials say more than $207 million in claims have already been paid out by insurance companies. Statewide, the damage is estimated at more than $100 billion, but it appears much of that loss may not be covered. A new study has started a debate about colonoscopies. The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found participants who were offered a colonoscopy had only 18% lower rates of colon cancer. An update to a CBS News investigation that found 400 children of elite Green Berets are waiting to get into childcare. Army families in the Florida panhandle say they have to drive up to 3 hours a day to drop off and pick up their kids, because their training camp has no childcare center. The Secretary of the Army says a new child development center will be built to help families of the Army's Seventh Special Forces group.

10/10: Explosions rock Ukrainian cities Russia fires on civilian targets far from Ukraine’s front lines. Republican senator faces outrage over comments critics call racist.
Russian bombs have fallen on cities far beyond the front lines in Ukraine, including the capital city of Kyiv. There are multiple dead and wounded, and the numbers are still rising. This follows a fiery explosion over the weekend that took out a bridge in Crimea, a crucial link between Russia and the territory it illegally annexed. We have first access this morning to audio, secretly recorded by one of the police officers injured in the assault on the Capitol. It comes from a meeting with Republican lawmakers after the attack, and it's being released ahead of what could be the January 6th committee's last public hearing, scheduled for Thursday. Barely four weeks before the midterm elections, many key races could not be closer. The latest CBS News YouGov Battleground Tracker shows the race to control the Senate is essentially a toss-up. Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville, who is not up for re-election this year, is facing outrage over comments that critics call overtly racist. Health officials are warning us about an early and long flu season. They say now is the time to get a vaccine. A new survey finds only about half of U.S. adults plan to get a flu shot. Deadly demonstrations against Iran's ruling regime are into their fourth week. The unrest began after 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died in the custody of Iran's morality police. Security forces continue to respond with force, trying to crush the protests that have become increasingly anti-government.

10/7: Pres. Biden decriminalizes marijuana under federal law. Gas prices are on the rise again.
President Biden says nuclear armageddon is closer than it's been in 60 years after comments from President Putin. This comes at a time when Ukraine's army appears to be weakening Russia's military position. Sources tell CBS News there's believed to be enough evidence to charge President Biden's son with multiple crimes. Here in this country, we're learning more about the federal investigation of the president's son, Hunter Biden. Sources tell CBS News the FBI and IRS believe there's enough evidence to charge the younger Biden with crimes -- although not in connection with his business dealings overseas. President Biden announced a mass pardon for everyone convicted of a crime for simple possession of marijuana and urged state governments to follow. The national average for a gallon of regular rose to almost $3.90 yesterday. In Las Vegas, there is new information this morning about the suspect accused of stabbing eight people on the strip yesterday.

10/6: Four members of a family kidnapped earlier this week have been found dead. Alec Baldwin and "Rust" film producers reach settlement.
Ukraine has managed to take back significant territory in just the past few weeks, including the strategically important city of Lyman. OPEC+, the international oil cartel, says it plans to cut production quotas by 2 million barrels a day, starting next month. That's around 2% of worldwide production. The U.S. accuses OPEC of doing this, in part, to help Russia. Breaking news from Thailand, where officials say a former police officer attacked a daycare center this morning and killed more than 30 people. At least 22 of the victims are children, as young as two years old. Police say he killed his wife and child at their home after the attack, and then shot himself to death. President Biden toured some of the damage from Hurricane Ian in Florida yesterday with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, a possible rival for the presidency in 2024. The Daily Beast reports the woman who told the website that the Republican Senate candidate, Herschel Walker, paid for her abortion in 2009, now claims she is the mother of one of his children. He's denying this report, too. Republican leaders continue to back Walker in his crucial race in Georgia against Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock. Breaking news overnight from California, where police found the bodies of a family of four that had been kidnapped earlier this week. They were found the same day that a video was released, showing a masked man kidnapping the family members from their trucking business at gunpoint. Alec Baldwin and his fellow producers have reached a settlement with Halyna Hutchins' family, who was accidentally shot and killed by Baldwin on the set of his movie "Rust." The deal will allow production to resume, but a criminal investigation is still underway.
