Ep 254 - Lazarus Lake - The rise of Big's Backyard Ultra

Send us Fan MailLaz is back and this time he's talking Big's Backyard and virtual races... something we didn't think we'd be speaking with Laz about a year ago! It's been a while since Jody and David spoke to Laz (aka Gary Cantrell) about the Barkley Marathons (if you've not listened, we suggest going back and listening to this first) and since then we'd had the National Running Show where Laz was star of the show and a global pandemic. As a result, Laz's usual roster of races hasn't gone ahead... but that has helped explode the popularity of the Big's Backyard race format and another huge virtual race run by Laz - The Great Virtual Race Across Tennessee. Jody and David discuss these with Laz.Laz also gives his view on the controversy surrounding the banning of BLM and political posts in the Facebook group.Oh, and a bit of a disclaimer - there was a bad lag which made it difficult for the conversation to flow as freely as intended.Enjoy! If you enjoyed this episode please SUBSCRIBE to get every episode delivered to you before everyone else.Join the conversation! Ep 252 - Running across the US for MS with Ashley Schneider

Send us Fan MailIt's not often you wake up one day and think "I know what I'll do next... I'll run across the US!", but that's pretty much how Ashley Schneider started on her journey that has seen her cross the US multiple times. Quitting her job on a cruise ship and moving back to Wisconsin to plan, Ashley knew she wanted to run across the US in aid of raising money to support multiple sclerosis charities, a disease that affected her mother. Little did she realise that the whole first run across the States would result in the organisation that is today MS Run The US, that takes hundreds of ordinary runners and allows them to join in an epic journey.Jody and David speak with Ashley about the moment of her epiphany, how she prepared for that first race and the challenge of raising money and co-ordinating runners from all across the US. Enjoy! If you enjoyed this episode please SUBSCRIBE to get every episode delivered to you before everyone else.Join the conversation! Ep 246 - The truth about athlete funding and selection with Marilyn Okoro

Send us Fan MailMarilyn Okoro's experience of being denied further funding to continue her athletics career really is a thing of shame. That's why Jody and David invite her onto the podcast to talk about her experience and uncover just how closed the system really is.Now a vocal advocate for athletes, Marilyn enjoyed success on the track finishing third in the 800 metres at the 2007 and 2008 IAAF World Athletics Final and bronze in the 4 x 400 metres relay at the 2007 World Champs. She is a holder of an Olympic bronze medal for the 4 x 400 metres relay after two teams that finished ahead of them in the 2008 Beijing Olympics were disqualified for doping and they were retrospectively handed the medal... EIGHT years later! (No prizes for guessing that one of the disqualified teams was Russia - the other was Belarussia). In this episode, Marilyn talks about her path into the sport and the issues she faced working with UK Athletics and a hierarchy who insisted she did things their way. This is a really eye-opening episode that gives you an insight into the way athletes are treated by the funding bodies who have the power to make or break careers based on sometimes quite oblique criteria.Enjoy! If you enjoyed this episode please SUBSCRIBE to get every episode delivered to you before everyone else.Join the conversation!
