Being an Average Leader Sucks | Michael Bernoff | Episode 129
Mediocrity is continuing to be more and more accepted while people still expect results from those above them. The acceptance of the “dad bod”, “bad bosses”, and “doing the grind” are just a few examples of the new average. But as leaders we need to be better than the average, for that our teams, organizations, and even selves depend on our peak performance. That’s why being an average leader simply sucks.
When Michael Bernoff got called out for not living up to his potential, it bothered him. But rather than shrinking from the challenge, he chose to step up and solve a problem he saw in the personal development industry. This quest led him to develop Human Interaction Technology, which moves society forward through the power of communication. From there, Michael founded the Human Communications Institute, which is dedicated to creating rapid and lasting change in people’s lives. He works with entrepreneurs, athletes, executives, and Fortune 500 companies, offering courses, live events, and leadership training for those who want to achieve a life beyond limits.
Topics
During this interview, Michael and I discuss the following topics:
The Inspiration behind the bookHow leaders can identify if they are averageHow to utilize role models to your advantageHow to move from you are to where you wantHow to overcome failures en route to their goals

The Importance of Psychological Safety | Tim Clark
Employee safety is being redefined. We write volumes of standard operating procedures about it. We measure it, regulate it, and insure against its risks. In the U.S. alone, organizations funnel billions into creating workplaces and environments in which employees are safe to bring their best talents. But physical safety, and added creature-comfort perks like stocked snack bars, open-air offices, and foosball tables, only do so much. They don’t adequately address an employee’s state of mind. They all but ignore employees’ psychological safety.
Timothy R. Clark is the founder and CEO of LeaderFactor, a leadership consulting and training organization that works with executive teams around the world. An Oxford-trained social scientist and sought-after international authority on organizational change, Dr. Clark is the author of five books on leadership, including his newest release, The 4 Stages of Psychological Safety: Defining the Path to Inclusion and Innovation.
Topics
During this interview, Tim and I discuss the following topics:
The Inspiration behind the bookThe four stages of psychological safety—Inclusion Safety, Learner Safety, Contributor Safety, and Challenger Safety—and what they mean for your organizationWhy your employees need to feel accepted before they’ll feel safe to contribute and be heardHow any worker can learn, regardless of aptitude, given the right environmentFour words every leader needs to live by: “No cover, no candor”How to swap the pattern of “helicopter leadership” for a culture of innovation

Lead with Speed | Alan Willett | Episode 127
One of the most important questions a leader can ask themselves is: “How do I get my teams, my organization to move faster?” That is the challenge that all leaders face. This challenge grows more intense every day. Lead with Speed is the answer. This problem of speed is often disguised by other symptoms, such as “my projects cannot make an accurate prediction of when they will be done” or the stated need of “my teams need to take more risks.” The real need is not reckless risk-taking that will lead to even more problems and nishing even later. The real need is for speed.
Alan Willett is the master of the “friction points” of organizations highly dependent on technology. This ranges from organizations that create world-class software products to the organization that use those products to create their own competitive advantage. Alan is the expert who transforms organizational friction points to produce positive results for the business and the people that create and use the technology.
Topics
During this interview, Alan and I discuss the following topics:
The Inspiration behind the bookHow leaders can own the acceleratorHow leaders can avoid data analysis paralysisHow Leaders can get into the mindset for leading with speed
