Last week both Stephen and I were out of town. Stephen was in New Orleans attending his brothers wedding and I was out in LA photographing Matisyahu for his latest album. Being that we recorded Episode #071 a few days earlier than normal we had a few extra days between tapings. You know what that means, Stephen will be angry that we talked for TWO HOURS this week. That is what happens when you have a ton of photo news, a ton of stories from the road and a really solid Flying Solo portion. And how can we forget our new sidekick and resident Hipster Mr Stephen Sutter who had some fantastic input this week. Talk about exploiting a niche to it's fullest. That is exactly what our guest Mike Allebach has done in the wedding industry with Tattooed Brides. You have to listen to Mike speak about why and how he built his very successful wedding photography business around alternative weddings most notably weddings featuring Tattoos. If you can find a niche and exploit it you can find yourself on top of an industry. People are always asking what can I do to stand out in this very crowded industry. Well, you can find out by listening to this weeks guest. There will be no photo news this week as both Stephen and I spent most of the week out of town. We recorded the podcast earlier than normal to make sure we did not leave you guys hanging. A Vegas Recap, A Ranty McRanterson, 2X Wheel of FRO and Flying Solo: RAWtalk #070 This week we dive into a little bit of a recap about our Vegas Vacation which included meeting the one and only Ron Jeremy. Along with a discussion about Stephens fun flight home with only a half a seat lol. Since we did a little bit of flying I had to RANT just a little bit about the boarding procedure from US AIR. The process makes no sense and really shows how well Southwest Airlines does the boarding procedure. One of the issues we face as photographers is asking for the sale. How much should we charge and if the client doesn't accept but offers less do you take it? I give a little insight into an upcoming photo shoot at the negotiating behind it. Welcome to the first ever RAWtalk from the road in Las Vegas. Unlike the ad "what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" what happens in vegas actually ends up on RAWtalk. First off why were we in Vegas in the first place? I got asked to speak at an event for a company called ClickBank. I was on the panel to help answer as many questions as possible to help people make it online. The second reason I was there was to attend the AVN's. If you're not sure what that is, make sure the kids are not around when you conduct your search. Now onto this weeks RAWtalk. I flew Stephen out to join me to not only do RAWtalk but make some fun content while there. The setup was pretty similar to what we have at home except we did not have the poker table or any extra lights. So when you are watching the show you will notice that the lighting shifts and changes as the sun goes down. All and all we were very pleased with how everything came out especially for our first RAWtalk on the road.

Here at RAWtalk headquarters aka my LOFT we attempt to do a one hour show each week. Much to Stephens chagrin we tend to miss the mark. Lucky for you, you get more RAWtalk just about every week including this one. This week we take a look at the NEW GEAR that was announced at CES. Was there a lot of major announcements from the big guns, no not really. Canon had ZERO, Nikon had three things including something sort of like a D4s and fuji had some random cool toys. Other than that I am glad I did not go to CES this year. What are your thoughts on third party lenses??? I had a reader tweet at me to never recommend a sigma lens again. I of course had a nice discussion to find out why he said that and that's what I talked about on the show. Finally we get into the first FLYING SOLO of 2014 and I have to say the questions were on FIRE this week. Thank you guys for downloading, listening and watching RAWtalk. Welcome to the first RAWtalk of 2014, we are back!!!!! First off did you see the NEW RAWtalk Logo yet, did ya, did ya? If not take a look at your phone, computer screen or the video to check it out. One of my goals for this years RAWtalks is to try and stay on point as much as possible while keeping the show fun and informative. Now I am not sure if I fully succeeded this week or not but I think worked out very well. Stephen and I discussed the last meet up of the year where we met a ton of Fro readers to see and discuss the Pulitzer prize winning photos. We jumped into photo news which was really light this week due to CES starting after we recorded this weeks episode. This weeks show wraps up with an explicit Rant on Banks and how they love to screw people any way they can. Wether it's fees on top of fees or hidden changes no one ever told you about. Please be sure that the kids have earmuffs on before listening to this portion of RAWtalk. I guess when I get passionate I may curse slightly, so be warned and enjoy this weeks episode.

To kick off this weeks Episode we discuss the recent Bootcamp in New Orleans followed by my few days off in Florida. As this is the final episode of the year I thought it would be good to look bad at some of the predictions I made last year as well as take a look into what I think will be coming in 2014. What do you think will be coming in the photography industry? I ended up getting sidetracked and started talking about peoples profile pictures on Match.com. I really have to make a tutorial for how take better pictures on dating profiles. As always we jump into Stephens Photo News with extra distractions followed by Wheel of FRO and Flying Solo. Dave Leno at the age of 24 has attained success that has eluded people twice his age. He has called sporting events for ESPN, the Big 10 Network and countless other outlets. He is great on camera for the televised games and superb with his calls on radio. You may be wondering why would I have a sports caster on RAWtalk? The reason is you can learn a lot from how Dave has been able to attain the success he has. You will hear how he got his first jobs, what jobs he does for free and how he continues to build his portfolio. This is one of those interviews that I think you will take a ton from if you sit back and give it a shot. Before my interview with Dave, Stephen and I hit up the weeks photo news and topics. Sometimes it's just easier to say "sorry" when you make a mistake. And last week we made an ooooppppss on the video portion of the RAWtalk. My camera angles focus was off which means we could not cut to it the entire show. But honestly, this type of thing happens and it just makes us more aware and prepared for the future. Just remember the quickest way to diffuse a situation is to own up to it. Now that that's out of the way Stephen and I catchup on how our Thanksgiving's were as well as talk about why I didn't get a pass for Jingle Ball. I ranty Mc Ranterson on the US Postal Service when I showed up and the post office was CLOSED. I rant again on "Black Friday" sales followed by extended "Back Friday" sales followed by yada yada yada sales, give me a BREAK!!!. We discuss Gary Vaynerchuck on Chase Jarvis Live as well as preview his new book "Jab Jab Jab Right Hook". As the holidays roll around we decided this week to dive into some gifts that we consider safe to purchase for photographers. Purchasing gifts for photographers is not easy. One because photography is expensive and two because you really don't know what someone needs or wants. So Stephen brought in a few items that may make your photographer friends crack a smile. This was the first week we had a contestant for the Wheel of FRO spinning!!!! The first contestant who was selected off of twitter was "Troy Heckler" and you will have to tune in to see what prize he will be walking away with. If you watch the video portion of the podcast we have to say OOOOPPPPPS and apologize. The reason we have to apologize is the main angle on me somehow shifted out of focus meaning we will not be cutting to that angle at all. This is a good warning to anyone filming out there to double or triple check your angles before and during recording to make sure everything is tack sharp. But shit happens, you learn form it, move on and try not to make the same mistake again. I hope you understand and keep coming back for me. Lucky for us we tested out a new angle using the Atomos Ninja 2 which allows us to use the D800 and 14;24 2.8 to give us a much better looking wide-angle.
