Edufuturists #150 - The Future of Teaching with Guy Claxton

We are delighted today to be joined by Professor Guy Claxton, Cognitive Scientist by training and writer of over 30 books on psychology and education, most recently a fascinating discussion on The Future of Teaching and the Myths that hold it back which John Hattie called ‘A timely tour de force’ and has a Foreword from Dylan William.   Many of you will have heard of Professor Claxton’s Learning Power Approach and will know that although he has officially retired, he is still Honorary Professor of Education at University of Bristol, Visiting Professor,at King's College London and Emeritus Professor, University of Winchester.  He has a 'double first' in Natural Sciences from Cambridge and a DPhil in Experimental Psychology from Oxford. He is a Fellow of the British Psychological Society, the Academy of Social Sciences, and the Royal Society of Arts. Edufuturists #149 - Cybersecurity with Jerry Ray

edufuturists.com Jerry Ray is Chief Operations Officer of SecureAge Technology, he has more than 15 years of experience in process engineering, consulting and global finance in the U.S. and Asia Pacific Region. He received his technical education in Operations Research Engineering from Cornell University, and later supplemented that with Degrees in International Economics and Comparative Policy Analysis at the University of Florida and the University of California, San Diego. He began his career as a Production Research Engineer at the Konica Corporation, then served as a Technical Solutions Advisor for a large Japanese Disney affiliate, and as a Process and Optimization Consultant in Amsterdam for a joint venture between the Japan Management Association Consultancy and the Ford Motor Company. In the U.S., Jerry provided international business risk analysis while at SAIC and independently crafted Asian market entry strategies as a consultant to several U.S. IT security and related technology firms.

We are joined by Conrad Taylor & Adam Dwight. Conrad is the Business Learning & Technologies Manager at City of Wolverhampton College, where he ensures the college is using the latest technology and the digital up-skilling of all staff and students. He has over 20 years’ experience in further education and his passion lies in fostering collaborative practice, personal development and creative thinking.   Adam has been a lecturer in FE for the last 25 years. In more recent years, he has become a lecturer in Teacher Education and a Learning Innovator supporting staff in the use of technology and embedding 21st century learning skills. Next month he will have his Viva for his PhD in Sports Equality.

This keynote by David Jones OBE was recorded at our Moving Forward Together in FE event on 23rd June 2021. He stepped down in January to pursue a range of consultancy and non-exec roles. David was a key presenter at our New, Next or Never Normal roundtable in June to launch a report he compiled of the same name, which we will discuss today. We asked about how to figure out the changing world of further and higher education. David was appointed as a Deputy Lieutenant of Clwyd in March 2010 and was awarded an OBE in the 2015 New Year’s Honours List in recognition of his services to education. David also won the TES UK FE Leader of the Year Award in 2017.

He is a co-founder of Synthesis, a company that brings students together from around the world to learn through complex games.    “Six years ago, Elon Musk asked me to start an experimental school with him at SpaceX. The goal was to develop students who are enthralled by complexity and solving for the unknown.”   Joshua co-founded Ad Astra School, the predecessor to Astra Nova, with Elon Musk in 2014. Joshua met Elon while teaching his children at Mirman School for highly gifted children in Los Angeles. Ad Astra School was located on the campus of SpaceX for Elon’s children and some Space X employee’s children.    The curriculum at Ad Astra was not that of a typical school. Students learned about artificial intelligence and how to deliver "essentially a TED talk".  To encourage entrepreneurship Ad Astra also had its own unit of currency called the "Astra," which the children were able to trade with each other. Joshua explains that "One of the things they do is three times a year there’s a marketplace called the Bazaar and at the Bazaar the kids have their own companies essentially."    Joshua will be delivering the keynote talk at the Edufuturists Awards 2021 on 2nd July.
