The New Grad Physio Podcast: 'Picking The Right Exercises For Your Patient'

Knowing where to start with a patients rehab programme may sometimes seem hard. What exercises do you pick? How many reps or sets should your patient do? What should I be working on; strength, hypertrophy, power...? Is bodyweight ok or should they use weights? All these questions may confuse you and make you feel unsure about whether or not you have prescribed the right exercises for your patient. These are all questions relating directly to rehab. So you might think they are rehab problems. But often they are NOT. This podcast episode will explain why this is and why learning more rehab exercises will not actually help you prescribe better rehab. You will also discover what you need to focus your attention on instead, to be confident you have prescribed the right rehab exercises for your patient, so they get better and so they stay on track with their rehab plan. Enjoy the show! PS. Andy would love to hear your feedback on this podcast. Please leave a review or get in touch at andy@newgradphysio.com and he will get right back to you. The New Grad Physio Podcast: 'Hip Impingement - Are You Treating The Wrong Hip'

Hip pain can be tough to get a grip a hold of. I’m sure you have seen those patients that seem to get better, sometimes quickly, but then just as quickly, they regress. Sometimes getting rid of their symptoms seems to be the easy part, as no sooner do these symptoms go away, they come back as patients get back in the gym or playing sport. It’s super simple and really obvious when you know it… But hardly anyone is doing it! This podcast episode will help you make simple sense of the hip, a complex joint in many ways... The New Grad Physio Podcast: 'The MUST Know Ankle Syndesmosis Test'

One of the most common lower limb misdiagnoses made by new grad’s involves ankle syndesmosis injuries. Often these injuries are mistaken for lateral ankle injuries like an ATFL or CFL ligament injury. And this is a big issue… As the management of syndesmosis injuries and lateral ankle injuries, is completely different! It’s kind of funny that I have put together a podcast episode, advising new grads about how to not misdiagnose these types of problems… Because I did exactly the same myself as a new grad! One of my most memorable *%$@ ups as a newly qualified therapist was missing an ankle syndesmosis injury. That experience left me wondering and questioning my knowledge and I set about learning everything I could about ankle syndesmosis injuries. Over the last 10 + years, having managed dozens of these types of injuries, I have learnt more and more, and I hope this podcast helps you to better understand the ankle syndesmosis and especially syndesmosis special tests.   I will detail the ankle syndesmosis special test I used the most often and explain why this should always be the the first test you should use if you suspect an ankle syndesmosis injury. The New Grad Physio Podcast: 'Ruling Out Serious Injury At The Neck'

Neck pain patients with positive red flag symptoms, like pins and needles and weakness, used to get my head in a spin as a New Grad. I used to worry that I would make this kind of patient worse... Unsure whether or not I needed to refer this type of patient to someone else or if I was safe to start treating them. I had a complex neck pain patient walk through my door recently, who had been in car accident and had quite significant neck pain, and presented with several red flags, alongside lower back pain and a concussion. He is a complex case, but through a simple, structured assessment we were able to rule out any serious pathology… And we were able to make a big change to his symptoms both in clinic and over the next few days in the very first session… By doing some really simple things. The same things that you could do with a similar patient if they walked in your clinic door tomorrow. This podcast episode will walk you through how to tackle neck pain patients, how to rule out sinister pathology, so you can be confident your patient is ok for treatment and rehab and take away that fear that you get when dealing with spinal injury patients, like neck or lower back pain.  Enjoy the show! The New Grad Physio Podcast: 'Why Prescribing Rehab Without A Diagnosis Is Malpractice'

Think about going to see your doctor. And before you even get chance to explain what is going on… The doctor just gives you some pills and shows you the door. You would hope this would never happen. Clearly the doctor needs to ask you some questions and examine you to diagnose your issue and THEN… Prescribe you with the right medication or advice for your illness. But most therapists do this very same thing day in and day out. You go through your assessment and even if you are unsure on what the diagnosis is you carry on regardless. This is no different to that bad doctor. You should never start treating your patient until you are clear about what you are actually trying to fix. In this podcast episode you will learn 3 simple steps you can follow to ensure you don’t make this big mistake… And ensure you can clinically reason any treatment technique or rehab exercise you use, with any patient you see. Enjoy the show! PS. Andy would love to hear your feedback on this podcast. Please leave a review or get in touch at andy@newgradphysio.com and he will get right back to you. The New Grad Physio Podcast: 'Why Impingement Is Not A Diagnosis And Why You Should Never Use It'

Impingement is NOT a diagnosis. I hold my hands up and admit that I used to think it was... And worse still, I admit I gave it this diagnosis to 100's of patients and the athletes that I worked with. Not only is this diagnosis label highly inaccurate... Giving impingement as a diagnosis is actually detrimental to your treatment plan and results in reduced adherence to a patients home exercise programme! If you understand this it is a one way ticket to quicker and more consistent results, even with tricky shoulder and hip cases. In this new podcast I’ll show exactly why ‘impingement’… - Is NOT a diagnosis and what it actually is - Why it is lazy label to use and what you should focus your and your patients attentions on instead - Why it should never be used and how to give a diagnosis to a subacromial bursa or cuff issue (the injuries that you would normally call ‘impingement’) without a mention of the word impingement. Enjoy the show! PS. Andy would love to hear your feedback on this podcast. Please leave a review or get in touch at andy@newgradphysio.com and he will get right back to you.
