302: Music to My Queers with Angie K
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with Angie K(@angiekeilhauer), a Latin American country singer who has independently released 2 original albums, both of which landed in the top five on iTunes. You might know Angie K from the Voice #teamBlake or her very queer music video for "Leave California" which is inspired by and stars her real life girlfriend. We chat about LGBTQ representation in music, how far it has come and how far we can go, some of our musical inspirations and talk about the fine line between allyship and pandering to the LGBTQ community as a musician. SBG 31: Mulan with Sydney Lai
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) talk to serial tech entrepreneur Sydney Lai (@sydneylai) about why Mulan Should've Been Gay. We debate Mulan's gender identity, bisexual icon Li Shang and why Reflection resonates with queer people everywhere. Sydney, the daughter of immigrant parents, talks about how difficult it can be coming out in an immigrant family and how it felt to see herself represented on screen with Mulan. We also talk about how devastating it is that Li Shang is cut from the reboot, how beautiful it is that gender fluid Mulan and sexually fluid Li Shang find each other and how many other Disney Princesses are GAY AF. 301: 20BiTeen
Welcome back to Lez Hang Out Season 3! Ellie and Leigh dive into the best things that 20Biteen has blessed us with. From the bisexual representation of the past to the representation of now, we talk about how finding positive representation for bisexuality in media isn't linear. We talk bisexual erasure from Willow to Waverly Earp to Karen Walker from Will & Grace. Our favorite bisexual, pansexual and sexually fluid representation like Sara Ramirez, Thor Love and Thunder and Are You the One: Come One Come All. And real life sexually fluid celebs like Miley Cyrus and Ashley Benson. It's a sexually fluid smorgasbord. SBG 30: Live from WBUR City Space SBG Parent Trap, Captain Marvel and The Little Mermaid with Isha Patnaik and Marie Connor
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with Marie Connor (@thistallawkgirl) and Isha Patnaik (@ishapatnaik) for their live show at WBUR Cityspace in Boston. Isha Patnaik dives into why The Parent Trap Should've been gay from Hallie so clearly being the gay twin, her secret romance with bag girl, that hair cutting scene and the sexual tension between Chessy and Elizabeth James. Ellie and Leigh dive into why Captain Marvel should've been gay from the longing stares between Carol and Maria, the way that they raised Monica together, Captain Marvel's haircut in Avengers End Game and the way that Brie Larson unapologetically ships Captain Marvel and Valkyrie, this movie is SO GAY. Marie Connor dives into why The Little Mermaid Should've Been Gay from from the Little Mermaid not fitting in with all of her straight sisters, Ursula being everyone's queer ex and Sebastian being the most fabulous gay best friend a girl could have. And Ellie and Leigh just had to write a song about living in a Homonormative World. It's all too obvious. Subscribe to our mailing list for updates on upcoming live shows. 220: Real Love
In this episode Leigh and Ellie discuss shipping real life couples. From Ellen and Portia to Samira Wiley and Lauren Morelli and everyone in between. Why do we ship them? Why does it hit us to hard when they break up? We are so invested in the success of these queer relationships because we want to see successful relationship role models, especially when the relationships on tv and in movies don't give us happy endings. With more and more queer celebrity couples coming out like Janelle Monae and Tessa Thompson (or Lupita Nyong'o), Megan Rapinoe and Sue Bird and Ashley Benson and Cara Delevigne, they give young queer people hope and plenty to gossip about! SBG 29: Mona Lisa Smile
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) talk about why Mona Lisa Smile Should've Been Gay. The IMDB synopsis is as follows: A free-thinking art professor teaches conservative 1950s Wellesley girls to question their traditional social roles. This movie has the highest number of characters that should've been gay out of any other movie we've done. Katherine Ann Watson (Julia Roberts) ends the movie without any man and was the catalyst for quite a few of her students' discovering their sexuality. Amanda Armstrong (Juliet Stevenson), the only out lesbian in the movie, gets far too little screen time and leaves us too soon. Giselle Levy (Maggie Gyllenhaal) is our favorite bisexual and it was impossible to pick just one person to ship her with. Betty Warren (Kirsten Dunst) is the dark horse gay of the film, serving up some gay goodness when she leaves her husband and moves to Greenwich Village with Giselle. Honorable mention to Giselle and Connie (Ginnifer Goodwin) for literally always being on top of each other or kissing each other's cheeks. Oh and did we mention Marcia GAY Harden?! Enough said. 219: Close Quarters with Mandahla Rose
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with Mandahla Rose(@twiistedrose), LGBTQ actress extraordinaire. You might know Mandahla from All About E, Alice & Iza and you will know her from BIFL, Passage the series, Forever Not Maybe, Crazy Bitches and For the Love of Jessee. She is a very busy woman and a fierce advocate for the LGBTQ community. We chat about dating your roommate, BIFL the series, playing an asexual character and what it was like being raised by two nuns. SBG 28: Wine Country
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) talk about why Wine Country Should've Been Gay-er. According to IMDB, when a group of longtime girlfriends goes to Napa for the weekend to celebrate their friend's 50th birthday, tensions from the past boil over. Full of SNL veterans, Rachel Dratch, Paula Pell, Maya Rudolph, Emily Spivey, Tina Fey and Ana Gasteyer, this movie does not disappoint. We know this film is already gay and THANK YOU for that representation. Out actress Paula Pell plays Val, everyone's best lesbian friend and the only love story in the film is between two queer women. BUT what if it was gayer? Tina Fey? More like Tina Gay! Are we right? Tina Fey's character Tammy is a gay icon in her flannels and vests and the chemistry between Tammy and Catherine (Ana Gasteyer) is palpable. Even Amy Poehler said she's open to Tammy having a late in life gay epiphany and we are all here for it. Out actress Paula Pell plays Val, everyone's best lesbian friend and the only love story in the film is between two queer women. 218: Something A Little Queer with Ariela Barer
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with Ariela Barer(@arielabarer), actress and up and coming director. You might know Ariela as Gert on Runaways, Carmen in One Day At A Time or from her coming out tweet because what is more queer than coming out on Twitter? We chat about pre-gay friendships, those friendships that are just "a little bit queer", friend breakups, when it feels like you're dating your best friend and why we feel the need to form intimate friendships with women before we come out. SBG 27: Incredibles 2
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) talk about why Incredibles 2 Should've Been Gay. Voyd is the queer fan girl in all of us when she meets Elastigirl. Violet will totally have a coming out moment in college. And the biggest lesbian of them all is Evelyn Devers, our favorite super villain. What's the gayest thing about her? Her hair is perfectly unkempt. Her outfits just scream boss lesbian. That lesbian smoulder. The fact that she can't sit. There is too much evidence to pick just one. And Elastigirl herself. Is sexuality elastic? She falls in love with being the gender roles being reversed and we don't think that's the only think she falls in love with.
