418: Stuck in Himbo with Jesse Nowack
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) chat with our good friend, the multitalented Jesse Nowack (@nowackinghellyeah) about our favorite himbos and trans male media representation. If you’ve listened to the podcast before, you know how much we love a himbo. Incase you are not familiar with the term, a “himbo” generally refers to a muscular man who has a big, kind heart but is not exactly the sharpest crayon in the box. It’s essentially the antidote to toxic masculinity. A himbo is the difference between a Kronk and a Gaston. We talk to Jesse about his experience being a trans male himbo. Jesse also teaches us about the types of himbos, like the himbim, herbo, and thembo. Listen for a vocabulary lesson you never knew you needed. We talk about lesbians and their emotional support himbos in media, like Robin and Steve in Stranger Things and Ellie and Paul in The Half of It. We also discuss trans himbo TikTok and how empowering it has been for the trans community. Follow along on Twitter: Lez Hang Out (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay at the end of every episode. SBG 64: Waterboy with Devin Ibanez
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) sit down with Devin Ibanez (@thatgayrugger), the first openly gay major league rugby player, to talk about why The Waterboy Should’ve Been Gay. We talk about tackling homosexuality (literally) and how Waterboy just might be Devin’s root. We also talk about who we are shipping and how astrology is queer culture. 417: Husband and Strife
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) chat about the age old trope in lesbian films of the “cheating lesbian” who cheats on her husband when she falls for a woman. The list of the times that we see this trope on tv and in films is honestly so long we can’t even mention them all. We talk about the ties with this trope to compulsory heterosexuality and the patriarchy. No matter how this trope is done, even when done in a movie that ends happily like Imagine Me and You, it’s still problematic because it centralizes a male storyline and makes the queer women into cheaters and home-wreckers. There is also a tie-in to the trope of the “predatory lesbian” who turns the straight girl and takes her away from whatever man she’s with at the time. This is a problem for so many reasons, in particular for being bad representation for young queer women who are first exploring their sexualities and are being presented with this ideal fantasy where crushing on a straight girl actually works out. It feels like such a lazy way to handle the story, because there are always options outside of cheating. The trope shows being gay as something that needs to be hidden and done privately. These movies perpetuate not only the predatory lesbian trope, but also the trope of the cheating bisexual. We talk about The Kids are Alright and how horrible it was for reinforcing these stereotypes and showing baby gays truly problematic representation. We hardly ever see healthy gay relationships modeled for us in our media and all of this toxic representation has a negative effect on young queer people who are looking to find themselves and understand their sexualities. SBG 63: Josie and the Pussycats with Alec Fletcher
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) sit down with Alec Fletcher (@pogo.and.work), self-appointed “Josie and the Pussycats expert” and co-host of Gotham Arcade, to talk about why “Josie and the Pussycats” Should’ve Been Gay. Everyone in this movie is gay, we are not accepting criticism at this time. If you haven’t seen this movie, you are in for such a treat when you finally do. This movie is full of bops and from the very first second of turning on the movie it is instantly gay. This movie is the cultural equivalent of the Chart from The L Word, because there is just so much going on and so many connections to other things in the greater lez universe. There is no heterosexual explanation for this film. Josie and Val kiss within the first ten minutes. How are we supposed to believe they aren’t together? Alec and Leigh are convinced Josie is in a throuple with Val and Mel and Ellie is convinced Josie is exclusively dating Val. Let us know who you ship on our socials. 416: Lez-ssentials Elena Undone
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) dive into Elena Undone for this Lez-ssentials episode, a recurring segment on the essential movies and TV shows in the lesbian canon. We talk about how this film fits into the lesbian media timeline. We go on to discuss the chemistry of the actors playing Peyton and Elena and the incredibly well done intimacy scenes. We’ll let the music choices and clear "The L Word" influences slide on this one, because the scenes are so well done. This movie is based on stories of real queer people, primarily the story of the writer/director Nicole Conn and her romance with Marina Rice Bader. We talk about the tropes shown (cheating, ugh), the experience of coming out later in life (like way later), and the importance of the film for the time period. This episode also comes with an original song loosely based on Elena Undone entitled “Losing Control” written by Leigh Holmes Foster and performed by Leigh Holmes Foster and Ellie Brigida. SBG 62: The Spy Who Dumped Me
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) sit down to talk about why “The Spy Who Dumped Me” Should’ve Been Gay. This movie is so much fun. We always love a movie about two women who love each other so much that they’ll kill for each other and go on a wild adventure. First off, this movie has Mila Kunis, Gillian Anderson, and Kate McKinnon, which means you already want to watch it without knowing anything else about it. These characters are so queer coded, especially Kate’s character Morgan. Her reaction to being hit on by a man is literally to kill him. Amazing. Also, the women in this movie wear the gayest outfits we’ve ever seen, white tank top + suspenders? Gay. Look, Audrey and Morgan are so cute together. We have a lot of feelings about their relationship and we’ll tell you all of them. Follow along on Twitter: Lez Hang Out (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay at the end of every episode. 415: Sad Femme Club with Kimmortal
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with queer, non-binary Filipinx artist Kimmortal (@kimmortaltheartist) to talk about how they are able to use their many artistic talents to express their identity and how the pandemic has impacted them as a performer. We talk about Kimmortal’s newest songs, our birth chart placements (they’ve got a lot of fire in their chart whereas we have a lot more water), and what it was like to work with Tegan and Sara. SBG 61: Warehouse 13 with Caitlyn Clear
Leigh (@lshfoster) takes on this week’s episode without beloved co-host Ellie (@elliebrigida), but don’t worry! She didn’t have too much time to be lonely, because she is joined by Caitlyn Clear (@clearlycaitlyn), who you may know as the writer of our musical podcast, The Flame: An Original Podcast Musical (@theflamemusical). Leigh and Caitlyn sit down to discuss why Warehouse 13 Should’ve Been Gay. We all know H.G. and Myka are together, even Joanne Kelly and Jaime Murray know H.G. and Myka are together. Sadly, the writers didn’t seem to get the memo. We deep dive into Caitlyn’s baby gay high school diary to analyze Bering and Wells content from 2010 and let’s just say, it’s very gay, they really didn’t try to be subtle. 414: Homo Alone with Mari Taren
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) hang out with actor, writer, and TikTok star Mari Taren (@mariel_taren) to talk about what it’s like being single during the pandemic. We discuss quarantine activities, all of the different realms of TikTok (sea shanty Tok or potato Tok?), and the frustration of navigating dating apps. We also talk about what it's like to be gay in Hollywood and how it can impact an actor's career prospects. Join us as we talk about how we’ve handled being homo alone this past year. SBG 60: Bridgerton with Krü Maekdo
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) sit down with Krü Maekdo (@krumaekdo), founder of the Black Lesbian Archives, to talk about why Bridgerton Should’ve Been Gay. This show gives us all of the elements of what could be an epic lesbian storyline and then does not deliver on it. We all know Eloise is gay. They’re really not even trying to disguise it. Between her relationship with her “best friend” Penelope, her obsession with Lady Whistledown, and her general attitude of indifference towards men, it really couldn’t be any more apparent that Eloise is a whole baby gay. Look, she cuts her own bangs. Need we say more? We talk about “best friend” Penelope and how while she is a bit better at hiding it, she is also very much a lesbian. They even use the popular ‘brother as a stand-in love interest’ trope, but we know better. We also talk about Queen Charlotte and the convenient lack of a King; she’s totally hooking up with Lady Danbury and you can’t tell us otherwise.
