503: Queeriography with J.J. Niemann
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) sit down with Broadway actor and TikTok star, J.J. Niemann (@jjniemann) to talk about how he went from musical theatre gay to TikTok fame. From J.J.’s baby theatre days in Charlotte’s Web to his freshly post college Broadway debut with Book of Mormon, we chat about how musical theatre has always been a safe space for queer people and how he knew from an early age that acting was his calling. We also talk about how it led him to TikTok stardom with his videos that give folks a peek behind the curtain and resonate with the theatre kid that still sings within many of us. We dive into how unique TikTok is as a platform and why queer people tend to find positive community more easily on TikTok than they do on other platforms. We also discuss censorship of queer content creators by social media platforms and the issue of cyber bullying within the community. SBG 68: Gunpowder Milkshake with Charlie Jane Anders
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) chat with author Charlie Jane Anders (@charliejaneanders) about why Gunpowder Milkshake Should’ve Been Gay. This movie was full of way too many kickass women in suits for us to believe that all of them are straight. We discuss the very clear poly relationship going on between all of the women in the library, the bisexual lighting following Sam around in every scene, and debate whether Madeleine's death counts toward Bury Your Gays. We talk about the lack of character development and how many missed opportunities there were for things to be so much gayer. 502: Hottie of Christ with Andy Randolph
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) sit down with nonbinary podcaster and voice actor Andy Randolph (@aonehattown) to talk about their journey with their queer identity and faith. Andy grew up in an evangelical community as the child of a pastor. They followed their family legacy and became a pastor until it became too difficult to reconcile their gender and sexual identity with the church’s views. We dive deep into what The Bible actually does say (or not say) about homosexuality. Andy discusses what finally caused them to break away from the church and how they currently feel about their relationship with faith. SBG 67: House Bunny with Sarah Kennedy
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) sit down with stand-up comedian and writer Sarah Kennedy (@sarahkomedy) to talk about why the movie “House Bunny” Should’ve Been Gay. This movie has Anna Faris, Emma Stone, and Kat Dennings, so if you haven’t seen it yet, you really should. In our experience, there’s nothing gayer than being in a sorority. So many characters in this movie are queer-coded (we’re looking at you, Mona) and even the male love interest is basically a lesbian stand in. These women are so deeply ingrained in the nightmare that is compulsory heterosexuality that they never quite find a way out of the closet. We enjoyed “House Bunny”, but it one hundred percent Should’ve Been Gay. Follow along on Twitter: Lez Hang Out (@lezhangoutpod) and answer our Q & Gay at the end of every episode. 501: Cre-Gay-Tors
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) are back for a fifth season of the little lesbian podcast that could! This week they discuss what is means to be a “cregaytor”. No, that’s not a creative alligator, although that would make for an entertaining discussion. Leigh and Ellie talk about being independent queer creators and what it’s like to bring a project all the way from sparkly new idea to fully complete work of art. They talk about the challenges of working within a market actively designed to make it more difficult for marginalized people to succeed and what they’ve learned throughout the process of making The Flame, an LGBTQ+ Romantic Comedy Podcast Musical. 420: Lez-ssentials Bly Manor with Kristin Murison
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) sit down with Lez Hang Out’s newest team member and resident Bly Manor expert, Kristin Murison (@therealksparkle) to talk about The Haunting of Bly Manor for this Lez-ssentials episode, a recurring segment on the essential movies and TV shows in the lesbian canon. We talk about the visceral reactions we experienced when seeing Dani literally haunted by her compulsory heterosexuality. We do a complete scene by scene run through of Dani and Jamie’s relationship, including a spot on reenactment of the proposal. This is Bly Manor if it were just Dani and Jamie’s love story, minus all of those pesky ghosts. Ellie reads many of the hauntingly beautiful quotes from the show and Leigh and Kristin take turns having emotional meltdowns. A lot of feels are felt by all. Stick around at the end of the episode to hear an original song loosely based on Dani and Jamie’s love story entitled, “One Day”. It will absolutely wreck you. We recommend having tissues nearby. SBG 66: Boy Meets World with Kai Choyce
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) sit down with writer and comedian, Kai Choyce (@kaichoyce) to talk about why Boy Meets World Should’ve Been Gay. All of the characters on Boy Meets World are queer culture and you cannot convince us otherwise. If you liked Topanga as a kid, you’re a lesbian now, we don’t make the rules. Cory and Topanga have lesbian relationship vibes. Cory and Shawn were also 100% in a relationship with one another. You could call it a bromance if you want, but you’d be wrong. The whole show revolves around their relationship. It is arguably the most important relationship on the show. We would be remiss if we didn’t talk about Eric and Jack, the cutest couple of himbos we’ve ever seen in a relationship with one another. They are easily the best part of the college years episodes. 419: The Gay-teen Hundreds
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) sit down to chat about the lesbian period pieces that we have been getting inundated with lately. It has been a trend for a long time, but it has definitely been getting worse. They continue casting famous straight actors and then using the exact same plot. We aren’t knocking the formula, we love a good lesbian yearning scene. But there are just so many of these movies and the majority of them do not have happy endings. Only 5% of all lesbian films and tv shows end happily. We are bombarded with tragedy and we are sick of it. We talk about how much better it would be if they could give us some happy endings, literally any diversity, queer actors, and queer directors. We also talk about our favorite lesbian period pieces and why they work for us, like Carol, Dickinson, and Gentleman Jack. SBG 65: 9 to 5 with Carolyn Bergier
Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) sit down with comedian and co-host of Dyking Out Podcast (@dykingout), Carolyn Bergier (@tgicarolyn) to discuss why the movie '9 to 5' Should’ve Been Gay. If you haven’t seen '9 to 5', it is a feminist movie from the 80s that stars gay icons Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton; so obviously you should go watch it immediately. We talk about the gay mafia, the inherent queerness of the song Jolene, and eventually we even talk about '9 to 5'! We delve into our favorite ships, but honestly, we’re pretty sure almost every woman in this office has slept together at least once. We are fully obsessed with the throuple: Judy, Violet, and Doralee; and you cannot convince us that they aren’t in fact a legit throuple.
