Connecting with Our Teenagers with Guest Kirsten Cobabe

I love all things teenager and so does my guest Kristen Cobabe the “teen whisperer”. When I first became a teen I found myself at a loss as to what to do and how to interact with my daughter. It was murky water and I struggled to say the least. But I have found my way and now I am enjoying the teenage years more than I thought I would. Today I’m joined by Kirsten Cobabe, who has worked with teenagers since she herself was a teenager as a mentor. In our discussion today, we talk about how to communicate best with both teens and tweens. This is one of the most significant developmental stages for them-- it's only right that we try our best to guide them without forcing their hands. Be sure to listen in! The best way to reach our teenagers is through connection, not control.   Episode Highlights: Kirsten’s background and experience How dealing with teens and tweens is different from a kid What you need to know about raising a teenager The changes that come with the teenager stage Why saying no is not our job as parents We need to choose our relationship with our kids over small issues   Connect with Kirsten: @kirstencobabe | Instagram Kirsten Cobabe | Website   How can we “shame-proof” our parenting? Do Our Children Have the Right to Say “No” with Guest Sterna

When our child says “no” it can send us into emotional turmoil both because of how we were raised and how society views a child who stands up for themselves. But no doesn’t need to be a dirty word, and our children need to have the space to explore standing up for themselves. If they aren’t allowed to do it at home how can they ever set boundaries as they grow up. What of yes too, if we are insisting on “yes” is that yes we receive authentic or is it coerced somehow and only used as a way to please us?   Sterna is my guest today, she helps us unravel this sticky parenting moment, and gives us her incredible insights into why no is more than just a child being defiant on purpose and ways we can work through the moments when our children use no.   Episode Highlights: Why “No” isn’t always bad Collaboration works better than blind obedience Letting go of complete control Respecting our kids, so they respect us   How can we “shame proof” our parenting? Aggression is a common occurrence in children and we see it often when there’s a new sibling. It is a fear response and one that can be tricky to unravel.  If we take a global look at our child and work on ways to build in connective practices while also allowing the tantrum to fully occur we can get movement with aggression.  Long time listener Ashley fully understands the modes of Peace and Parenting it’s just a pep talk she needs to reassure her she’s on the right path.    Episode Highlights: Aggression is fear, fear of needs not being met The connective nature of tantrums are therapeutic Empathy for feelings of jealousy can help offload feelings -- Want to support the Peace and Parenting Podcast by purchasing products through Hand in Hand parenting? How to Use Connection to Help Move Through Thumb Sucking

Kids have different ways to cope with stressful situations. Some resort to more vocal ways-- while others tend to go inward as a way to cope with what’s hard in life. It’s hard for us to know exactly how to approach them with love and kindness while still helping them move through tough behavior. Joining me this episode is a follower and active participant on the Facebook group, Jillian.  Jillian, like so many of us, struggles with a behavior that she can’t quite figure out how to navigate. We take a look at the whole child, the underlying and the more obvious and try to find ways to meet her daughter where she is using connection.  I know others struggle with thumb sucking and pacifiers and hope this episode is helpful.                Episode Highlights: Familial background The root cause of thumb sucking  What we can do to curb it without the use of shame   Check out the Empathy Podcast and learn why our kids need us most when they appear to be at their worst.  Download the FREE guide - HOW TO HAVE EMPATHY How do you come alongside your child when they are upset?
