Jules & Andy: A superb win for Brighton, Southampton struggle on, and worries for Marco Silva
Of course, there’s only one place we’re starting on this week’s episode of Jules & Andy: Brighton’s cracking win against Spurs. Jules, our delighted Brighton representative, recounts her recent meeting with manager Graham Potter and discusses how much the team have improved under his tenure. There’s even time for a Wimbledon update from Andy, since they won as well! Halcyon days indeed.Elsewhere, we take a look at struggles further down the south coast at Southampton who have gone three league games without a win. There’s some praise for their weekend opponents Chelsea- Willian in particular- and we also try to unpick Marco Silva’s troubles at Everton.Get in touch via our email: julesandandy@footballrambledaily.com or tweet us: @FootballRamble @andybrassell @julesbreachWe're now on tour! The Ramble: Wolves shock Man City, Liverpool win again, and Spurs look lost
A weekend full of surprises as Man City, Spurs and Man United lose after limp displays— but what a day for Steve Bruce and Matty Longstaff! No Brucey belly rub for Man United this time. Could the Longstaffs be the new Ameobis? Bruce in!Elsewhere, Norwich took a phenomenal gubbing as the topics went fully out of the window, Luis Figo has a job at Guildford’s tourist board and we have updates on Gordon Bennett and a surprisingly confident Kevin Keegan. The Blizzard: Benfica 5-3 Real Madrid, 1962
Join Marcus Speller and Jonathan Wilson, this time alongside author and commentator David Bolchover, for another episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. Today we’re heading back to 1962 to celebrate one of the most influential figures in 20th century football: Béla Guttmann. His Benfica side beat Real Madrid 5-3 in the 1962 European Cup final, and this extraordinary game was entirely reflective of an extraordinary man. After arriving at Benfica, having won the league the season before with Porto, Guttmann immediately sacked twenty first team players. He then took Benfica to two Primeira Divisāo titles and a triumph in the previous European Cup, before meeting five-time winners Real Madrid in the 1962 final in Amsterdam. A thrilling, chaotic game featuring a Ferenc Puskás hat-trick finished 5-3 to Benfica, with Guttmann cementing himself as one of the finest coaches of any generation.Fancy getting in touch? The Preview Show: A nightmare for Spurs, a stern test for Leicester and a potential thriller at St James’ Park
Marcus’ giddy aunt, Ruddy Nora and Gordon Bennett were all present at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as Bayern Munich continued their sustained efforts to destroy all football in North London with a comprehensive battering of Spurs. Can they put it right against Brighton?Liverpool had a strange Champions League experience themselves, and entertain Leicester and the disrespect-machine that is Jamie Vardy on Saturday. We also look ahead to Norwich hosting Aston Villa and Man United heading up to Newcastle, if only to see if both teams can remember what sport they play. On top of all this gold there’s a peek into our live documents, the return of the Brucey-belly-rub and a half understood assessment of the Robin Williams movie Bicentennial Man. On The Continent: Champions League roundup, Balo's back at Brescia, and Le Derby comes to Saint-Etienne
It’s time for another Champions League recap, as James and Andy are in situ for more continental coverage. We begin with Bayern’s tonking win over Spurs, thanks to four goals from Arsenal legend Serge Gnabry. We also take a look at some of your correspondence regarding Niko Kovač, and whether some of the doubts over his qualities have been alleviated, and we consider Bayern’s prospects for the season.Elsewhere, we discuss Real Madrid’s laboured, and largely undeserved, draw against Club Brugge, as well as revelling in the return of Mario Balotelli and Brescia. We also squeeze in a Ligue 1 roundup and look ahead to Le Derby this Sunday, as Saint-Étienne host Lyon!Drop us a line: otc@footballrambledaily.com or find us on social media by searching 'Football Ramble Daily'We're on tour, and playing Liverpool's Epstein Theatre tonight! Ramble Meets... Maggie Murphy
On today’s episode of Ramble Meets… Andy Brassell is off to Lewes FC in Sussex to meet their general manager, Maggie Murphy. Lewes FC are one of the most forward-thinking clubs in the country and pay their men and women teams equally, with both sides drawing from the same cumulative revenue and sharing the famous pitch at The Dripping Pan.Andy joins Maggie in one of their pitch side beach huts to discuss scoring a hat-trick at her now-home for Shanklin Ladies when she was thirteen, her record breaking work with Equal Playing Field, her twenty-year footballing career and the potential legacy from the recent women’s World Cup. It’s a fascinating listen, as Maggie remains at the forefront of the advancement of gender equality within football and wider society.Search ‘Football Ramble Daily’ on social media to find us, and email us here: show@footballrambledaily.com We're performing at Liverpool's Epstein Theatre on Thursday night! Jules & Andy: Arsenal stutter on, Man United slip to eleventh, and more troubles on Tyneside
It's time for a brand new episode of Jules & Andy, hot off the press after Monday Night Football! We delve into that slightly underwhelming affair between Man United and Arsenal, before discussing the sides' capacity for any sort of success this season. We then head north to Tyneside to try and understand what's been going wrong at Newcastle. With Rafa Benitez out and Steve Bruce cautiously drinking from the poisoned chalice, we ask what can be done to restore some hope to a proud footballing city. We also get to some of your correspondence, which includes chat on VAR and Australian pizza shops!Get in touch via our email: julesandandy@footballrambledaily.com or tweet us: @FootballRamble @andybrassell @julesbreachWe're now on tour! The Ramble: Liverpool edge past Sheffield United, Villa struggle, and Watford are officially terrible
Sheffield United came so close to earning a point against Liverpool only for young Dean Henderson to make a costly mistake. Chris Wilder’s response was less arm-around-the-shoulder and more foot-square-in-the-nuts. IT’S THE ONLY WAY HE’LL LEARN.Elsewhere in the Football Universe, Wolves got a much needed win, the magnetic Slaven Bilic marches on with West Brom, we hear of ill-disciplined ball boys, Mario Balotelli makes a welcome return and Mike Dean steals the show in another sport all together. The Blizzard: Rangers 2-2 Celtic, 1987
There are some football derbies that transcend the ninety minutes on the pitch and the few annual fixtures, and instead become knitted into the fabric of the societies they inhabit. The Old Firm Derby is one of the definitive derbies in world football and we’re heading to the 1987 tie between Rangers and Celtic for today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. We’re joined by Guardian sports writer Scott Murray to discuss a truly incendiary affair - Graeme Souness’ Rangers had suffered a turgid start to the league campaign and hadn’t won the title for nine seasons, while Billy McNeil’s Celtic were flying. The two sides met in front of 44,000 people at Ibrox for one of the craziest matches you’ll ever see. Four goals, red cards, fights and a retrospective police enquiry— this game had it all...We're currently on tour! The Preview Show: Giant killings in the Carabao Cup, the return of the Premier League, and more horse bothering
A man’s punched a horse again and there’s really nowhere else to start. This time it was a Portsmouth fan. We don’t know why supporters of our teams keep doing this and we assure you we’re not involved.Away from that there was an actual Carabao Cup game as Southampton won THE South Coast derby, while Spurs went out to Lolchester on penalties and Old Man Milner helped Liverpool past MK Dons. We also hear of a potential fix for VAR’s offside problem, another ding dong between Mo Salah and the Egyptian FA, and a potential pay day for Mino. We're on tour!
