On The Continent: The Bundesliga returns, and how might the transfer market change?

Ladies and gentlemen, this is not a drill: football is coming back. Well, some of it. Without any fans.On today’s episode of On The Continent, we celebrate the Bundesliga’s upcoming return while acknowledging the need for continued caution. We also speak to FC Union Berlin's Christian Arbeit about how their players reacted to the news and what they've been doing throughout lockdown to best prepare themselves for its return. We also discuss some of Fabio Paratici’s recent thoughts about player salaries and how the football transfer market may change drastically in the coming seasons. The likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona will be desperate for more high-profile transfer activity akin to what we've seen in the last few years, what with their respective selections of high-earning benchwarmers. Fancy getting in touch? The Ramble: Newcastle players back Bruce, Project Restart touts neutral venues and could the Premier League move to Australia?

With each passing day there are more and more ideas put forward for how to finish the season. This time around we have Neutral Venues With No Relegation and Do it All in Australia! Some are more sensible than others. It’s not just the Premier League that needs finishing though. What of the FA Cup? Pete reiterates that Newcastle United have scored the most goals so far - because of their replays against lower league opposition - so should probably win it. We’ve got lots more than that though, we’ve got a Dennis Bergkamp fronted consortium sniffing around clubs, we’ve got Jim’s surprising court appearances, Pete “Every day is Tyskie day” Donaldson’s birthday, Luke’s golf insight, some utter filth from Barry Davies, a plea to unify Mother’s Day and the latest entry into Pete’s Film Club. The Blizzard: Spartak Moscow 2-1 Dynamo Kiev, 1989

We shine a light on some underappreciated contributors to European football on today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, alongside BBC and Okko Sport contributor Sasha Goryunov!Sasha joins us to discuss the standout game he remembers from a childhood growing up in the Soviet Union, as Spartak Moscow ensured they won the 1989 Soviet League with victory over Dynamo Kiev. Dynamo were managed by the revolutionary tactical thinker Valeriy Lobanovskyi, who was among the early adopters of computers for statistical analysis and a pioneer of pressing football. He lined up against the 35 year-old Oleg Romantsev, the coach who brought an air of calm to the Spartak dressing room. What unfolded was a chaotic game rounded off by a Valeri Shmarov free-kick worthy of winning any title. For more stories from the annals of football history, visit www.theblizzard.co.uk to explore their archives that contain over 700 articles of stories just like this one!***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. On The Continent: The Ligue 1 season ends but transfer rumours roll on

Is football coming back anytime soon? It’s proving impossible to say definitively. As the Premier League’s ‘Project Restart’ gathers momentum, Ligue 1 has announced that they will not attempt to finish this season, after the French government banned gatherings of large people until at least August. We break down that news on today’s episode of On The Continent! This decision has brought on yet more worries for French clubs and the precarious financial states some of them are in, with €600m owed in outstanding transfer funds to those clubs. We discuss their situation as well as developments from Spain, where Julen Lopetegui voiced concerns about the mental and physical demands on players in lockdown, and Germany who are cautiously planning to restart the Bundesliga. Don’t worry, there’s also a portion of meaty football chat; we work out where the likes of Edinson Cavani, Dries Martens and Gonzalo Higuaín may end up plying their trade when football eventually returns! Fancy getting in touch?
