We look back at one of the famous sides of post-war Europe on today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. Journalist and author Dominic Bliss joins us to discuss the Grande Torino side and their 5-3 win over Atalanta in the 1946/47 Serie A season.After managing Torino in 1939, Jewish coach Ernő Egri Erbstein had to return to Hungary as the Second World War begun. He saw no alternative but to volunteer himself to work in fascist labour camps to try and survive – after six torturous years where he and his family endured the worst of the Hungarian holocaust, he managed to escape the camp and stay alive. After the war ended, he returned to Torino and coached a side that had won two Serie A titles since his departure, on the back of his central European counter-attacking football that was so prevalent at the time. We’re so close to football! The Premier League watches on with interest as the Bundesliga returns with potential lessons for our own Project Restart. It could be June, with a list of “cultural changes” implemented. We have all the latest on the latest meetings about meetings! To be fair to the Premier League that’s about all they can do at the moment as we seem to be no closer to a concrete plan. That doesn’t matter though, because Louis van Gaal has decided to keep us all entertained by calling Ed Woodward an “evil genius” and “inviting” Jose Mourinho to explain why it only took four days for him to replace him at Man United. There’s a beef stew bubbling away here. In Turkey Besiktas have installed a disinfection cabinet at their training ground and the thing looks like some amazing futuristic tech, so naturally we posit some alternative uses, while we also look forward to the Neville brothers taking each on in some televised garden centre challenge under the new rules and learn that we may be more of an aphrodisiac than we realised. Football is BACK! In Germany. On May 16th. The Bundesliga have confirmed their plans to resume the competition, not without some controversy, and we’re all looking forward to seeing some live football again. Away from that actual news we have a very salty show today, inspired by Andres Iniesta and his baby-making goal against Chelsea in the Champions League in 2009, which apparently led to a spike in births 9 months later.
