LEO's Unpopular Opinions
Please message us! We’ll pin to the episode, and would love a dialogue.Law enforcement is generally pretty subjective and we as LEOs are given ample discretion on how we perform our duties.Over the last few years, I've seen some LEOs rise, I've seen LEOs fall. Same with attorneys on both sides, jailors, etc. Heck, my original Chief of Police got federally indicted while I was working there and served years in prison. Some of these opinions are likely to keep you out of hot water. Some I hope to guide your career into the loving hands of safety, longevity and prosper. Some may keep a co-worker alive. LEO is always hoping a chief listens, and an episode changes the face of an agency for the better - making it better at serving the public, its employees, and instilling public trust. If you don't like my opinions on grooming standards, pay, and the risk of risky group text threads, let me know your opinion. Or just do what everyone does over these holiday dinners when politics come up - explain to me why you're right, I'm stupid, and I shouldn't be allowed to weigh in!Stay safe, stay warm!-LEO Support the showPlease follow on FB and Substack at links below! Domestic Disputes - 13 minutes of How to Manage Safely and Effectively
Please message us! We’ll pin to the episode, and would love a dialogue. We've all heard in training that domestic disputes / assaults can be soooooooooo high risk. Then we get on patrol, ride 10 of them a week, and complacency sets in. We're arresting husbands in front of wives and brothers in front of brothers and nothing is happening...This episode will provide you with some ideas on how to safely, fairly and efficiently manage a high frequency call. With Thanksgiving just around the corner, I hope none of you have to ride calls of "My cousin threw the gravy in my face" or "The turkey had no seasoning so I had to whoop his butt!"-LEO Support the showPlease follow on FB and Substack at links below! Weapons - How to Make Choices on What to Carry and How to Carry it!
Please message us! We’ll pin to the episode, and would love a dialogue.Your agency likely tells you what to carry as far as weapons - rifle, pistol, shotgun. This episode is designed to get us thinking about the options we DO have, and to get management thinking about how choosing the correct weapon systems will make police officers safer and more effective. We will not only be discussing what weapons to use, but what modifications to these weapons could make them more effective tools. Let's also talk about how to carry them! The last thing we want is to be in a fist fight and have our gun or knife accidentally introduced into the fray.I hope you take something useful away from this episode, and at the very least get thinking about what your setup is and how you could make it work better for you. These weapons are tools, and are useless without proper maintenance, training and availability.-LEO Support the showPlease follow on FB and Substack at links below! Dealing with Mental Health - How to Recognize and Address those with Mental Health Conditions
Please message us! We’ll pin to the episode, and would love a dialogue. If you've been in law enforcement more than 15 minutes, you have dealt with someone with a severe mental condition. You may realize there's something off with this individual immediately, or it may be later in the interaction that they mention the aliens listening in on their phone or the FBI hiding in their attic and stealing their flour.I don't say those things to make fun of these folks - I say it because it's real, and how you choose to steer the conversation when you realize there is a chemical imbalance causing delusion or other issues will effect the outcome of the stop.In this episode I will discuss some common mental health conditions that you can fully expect to encounter regularly. People with severe mental health issues often become homeless and involved in hard drug use, exacerbating their underlying conditions.Let's learn today how to identify these conditions the best we can during our brief interaction, and how to manage the individual safely and professionally. There's nothing good about thinking someone is drunk and tasing them, then finding out later that they are severely mentally impaired. Use this episode to help develop your understanding, so that even though you were dispatched to a drunk and disorderly party, you have the knowledge and thought process to put on your mental health professional hat and transition into fixing the problem.Happy listening!-LEO Support the showPlease follow on FB and Substack at links below!
