951 || easterlin paradox
The Easterlin Paradox refers to the idea that, on average, increasing income levels in a society do not necessarily lead to increased happiness or life satisfaction beyond a certain point. To avoid or mitigate the Easterlin Paradox and find greater happiness:Focus on Non-Material Sources of Well-Being: Prioritize non-material sources of well-being, positive relationships, personal growth, meaningful activities, and a sense of purpose.Practice Gratitude: Cultivate a habit of gratitude by regularly reflecting on and appreciating the positive aspects of your life.Invest in Experiences: Allocate resources and time to experiences rather than material possessions. Travel, hobbies, and social activities.Strengthen Social Connections: Invest in meaningful relationships and social connections. Engage in Activities with Intrinsic Value: Pursue activities and interests that you find intrinsically rewarding, regardless of their economic value. Balance Work and Leisure: Strive for a healthy work-life balance. Prioritize leisure time and relaxation.Practice Mindfulness: Mindfulness meditation and practices can help individuals become more aware of the present .Invest in Health: Prioritize physical and mental health through regular exercise, a balanced diet, and practices that promote well-being.Set Realistic Expectations: Set realistic expectations for what these pursuits can provide.Contribute to Others: Engage in acts of kindness and altruism. Helping others and contributing to the well-being of your community.Cultivate Resilience: Develop emotional resilience and coping skills. Resilience is linked to greater life satisfaction.Evaluate Life Goals: Reflect on your life goals and values periodically. Ensure that your aspirations align with what genuinely brings you happiness and fulfillment.Prioritize Time Over Money: consider how a choice will impact your time and well-being, rather than solely focusing on financial gains.It's important to recognize that the relationship between money + happiness will vary from person to person. While the Easterlin Paradox suggests that beyond a certain point, income may not significantly increase happiness, individual circumstances, values, and priorities play a crucial role. 950 || how to "just do it" || strategies to overcome executive dysfunction
The "Just One Thing" Approach: Tell yourself that you'll do just one thing related to the task. It could be writing one sentence, reading one page, or making one phone call. This reduces the initial pressure.The "Do Nothing" Technique: Counterintuitively, tell yourself you'll sit at your workspace and do nothing related to the task for a set period, such as 5 minutes. Often, once you're there, you'll naturally transition into work mode.The "No Distraction Zone": Create a designated workspace for focused work. Only allow work-related items in that space, and make it a rule not to do any non-work activities in that area.The "Mind Dump": Before starting work, jot down all the thoughts, worries, and distractions in your mind. This clears mental clutter and makes it easier to concentrate.The "Start with Research" Approach: If your task involves research, start by reading or researching a topic related to the task. This can be a gentle entry point that eases you into the work.The "5-Second Rule": When you think about starting a task, count down from 5 to 1 and commit to taking action when you reach 1. This prevents overthinking and encourages quick action.The "Environmental Change": Sometimes, changing your physical environment can help you start. Try working in a different room, a coffee shop, or a library.The "Positive Affirmations": Practice positive self-affirmations before starting. Remind yourself of your capabilities and why the task is important to you.The "Work Sprint Challenge": Challenge yourself to work intensely for a short period, such as 15 minutes. Knowing that it's a brief commitment can make it easier to begin.The "Visual Progress Tracker": Create a visual progress tracker, like a checklist or a chart, that you can mark as you make progress. Seeing the visual representation of your work can be motivating.The "Accountability Group": Form or join an accountability group with friends or colleagues who also have work to do. Share your goals and check in on each other's progress regularly.The "Power of Choice": Give yourself a choice of tasks. If you have multiple tasks to complete, choose the one that feels most appealing at the moment. This way, you're still making progress on something.GET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 949 || Cleese on creativity
John Cleese, British actor and comedian once said: “Nothing will stop you being creative so effectively as the fear of making a mistake. Creativity is not a talent. it’s a way to operate. an ability to play. And he described the most creatives (when in this mood) as being childlike. For they were able to play with ideas… to explore them… not for any immediate practical purpose but just for enjoyment. Play for its own sake.RESOURCES: https://www.forbes.com/sites/bryancollinseurope/2020/02/25/john-cleese-on-how-to-become-more-creative-and-productive/?sh=284675ea6857 and https://genius.com/John-cleese-lecture-on-creativity-annotatedGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 947 || practical magic
It's been 30+ years but... Sisterhood!? Magic!? COMMUNITY!? You know I had to do it. "Bullock and Kidman play sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, descended from a long line of witches. Raised by their aunts after their parents' death from a family curse, the sisters were taught the uses of practical magic as they grew up. As adults, Sally and Gillian must use their magic to destroy an evil spirit before it kills them." - WIKI RESOURCE: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Practical_MagicGET AN OCCASIONAL PERSONAL EMAIL FROM ME: www.makeyourdamnbedpodcast.comTUNE IN ON INSTAGRAM FOR COOL CONTENT: www.instagram.com/mydbpodcastOR BE A REAL GEM + TUNE IN ON PATREON: www.patreon.com/MYDBpodcastOR WATCH ON YOUTUBE: www.youtube.com/juliemerica The opinions expressed by Julie Merica and Make Your Damn Bed Podcast are intended for entertainment purposes only. 946 || fighting for crumbs || book club
We need to remember that the "doom" we feel is part of the plan. They have made us fearful of change, but that's a trap. Change is liberation. Change is freedom. Change is justice. But we have to stop feeding into the narratives that everything we know and love will disappear if we don't have capitalism, because that's (quite frankly) bullshit. 945 || all or nothing || (every dollar isn't a vote?) || book club
As Mikaela Loach says in her book, "It's Not That Radical," "many behavior changes are only made possible - or available to the masses - if there is infrastructure implemented to enable those changes and to reduce the growth obsession that makes the energy demand so vast." and with that in mind, we must remember it's not ONLY our responsibility but the responsibility of the collective to make change that works.
