Ep 596: Shame is a Hell of a Motivator

What motivates you? It seems to me that each athlete is motivated by driving forces that uniquely play to their greatest fears. While the experiences that shaped those fears may be as varied as the individual themself, common themes can be observed across the board. Get John and Tex’s take on motivating factors in this week’s conversation.    Motivation can come in a lot of forms. Some of it is as transparent and shallow as the carefully chosen filter used to promote it. When it comes to consistently driving performance, what sticks? What do the most proficient athletes feed on to commit to their training day in and day out? This week we dive into just that with a talk dedicated to motivation.     Shownotes: https://pahq.co/Ep596 7 Day Risk Free Power Athlete Training Trial: https://pahq.co/Train Check out what we do: Website - https://powerathletehq.com/ Podcast - http://pahq.co/PARadioSpotify Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/powerathletehq Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

John F. Kennedy wrote an article in Sports Illustrated, The Soft American, outlining his thoughts on the decline in the physical strength and ability of young Americans sharing, "one out of every two young Americans was being rejected by Selective Service as mentally, morally or physically unfit.”This challenge is as relevant now as it was in 1960.     In this podcast, John and Tex talk being the hammer, how to increase your resilience and lethality, plus balancing training for a specific job's fitness test and still improving performance required to do the damn job well. Ep 590: Founder of Husker Power & the NSCA Boyd Epley

What was sport before carefully planned strength and conditioning programs existed? What was it like when the only athletes you saw in the weight room were the injured ones? Few people remember the days when training for any sport was comprised of little more than running long distance. But Boyd Epley not only remembers it vividly, but he was part of a pioneering few who actually reformed this broken system. He’s a god at the University of Nebraska and a founder of the NSCA.     Boyd Epley, legendary strength coach hailing from the University of Nebraska changed the game. Literally. He was able to convey the importance of power over conditioning for football players, which was not an easy fight. What followed was some of the most dominant performances the sport had ever seen and proof that Boyd was onto something big. Soon, universities the nation over would be attempting to replicate his program. Ep 588: Hypertrophy Controversy Solved! w/ Antionio Squillante

It’s been a long time since we visited the biological principles of strength development. If you are a new coach, a student, or a curious athlete, this episode is vital to understanding some of the more complex concepts of human performance, like rate of force development, compensatory accelleration, hypertrophy, post activation potentiation, and so much more. A huge thank you to our guest, Antonio Squillan for making these digestable even for the Power Athlete meathead.    Exploring the science behind strength and power development is what Antonio Squillan does best. Somehow he was able to make time for John and Tex while getting his PhD at USC. The only thing more impressive than Antonio’s coaching background is his expertise in human performance.
