365. Edit to Expand Method with Pamela Pekerman of Hustle Like a Mom
Pamela Pekerman is the product boss behind Hustle Like a Mom, a company on a mission to support mompreneurs in building bridges between entrepreneurship and mom life. She’s also pioneering her “edit to expand” method. Today, we learn all about how we can handle our to-dos and find focus, all while making our lives smarter, simpler, and more fun!Just like Pamela, we’re both moms so these tips were super appreciated. As a mom, it’s easy to hit burnout before you even realize it because you only get so much time each day between drop off and pick up, where you can really focus. This is why finding and setting your priorities are such an important way to find success. That’s where Pamela’s edit to expand method comes in. Because “you’re not going to eat the whole menu,” it really comes down to choosing the right tasks while making sure the goals you’re setting are actually manageable and realistic. Remember, where you focus is what you get back. It’s easy to find yourself paying for things in three ways: money, time, and energy. So making sure we’re only paying for the right things is really important. That’s not to say we should be paralyzed, worrying about making sure we don’t make a bad decision, but, as Pamela explains, it’s more about regularly reassessing your situation, decoding your community, and being ready for change! Kelly Kussman is one of our Masterminders and she’s doing amazing, motivating, and inspiring things as the founder of Cayla Gray, creators and sellers of clean, luxury brand fragrances. Her Small Biz Founders story will really resonate with you.Cayla Gray produces fragrances and candles, and when they say “clean,” they mean non-toxic, hypoallergenic, and no parabens. They have four core scents – all handmade in Arizona. Kelly started her career with a dream job out of college, selling cosmetics. Since then, she’s taken her passion and turned it into a successful business of her own.Kelly’s dad was an entrepreneur so she grew up around product bosses and always saw it as something exciting that she could aspire toward in her own life. It was scary to walk away from the security of that dream job, but she explains how she found the courage to do it, and why it was one of the best decisions she’s ever made. One of the things Kelly does an incredible job of is telling her brand’s story, and making those connections with her potential customers. As a business owner, you should be sharing your story repeatedly with your audience to build those connections, and draw potential customers into your brand. Knowing the reason why you started your business and being able to share that story with your customers really allows you to connect with and attract the audiences that you want to sell to! 360. Front-of-House vs. Back-of-House for Running Your Product Biz
We’re still coming to you from our hotel room in Costa Rica, and our time here has inspired us to talk about the difference between front and back-of-house. These are hospitality terms, but the principles can be applied to all product businesses.Front-of-house is when you’re facing the customer. Think receptionists in a hotel or wait staff in a restaurant. In a product business, this could be your branding, customer service, or even your brick-and-mortar store. The front-of-house role has a human element to it, meaning that you are interacting with the customers, and making sure they are satisfied with your product and company. Back-of-house is more the operational side of things. In a hotel, this would be the cleaning staff, or, in a restaurant, it would be the chef working in the kitchen. In your business, “back of house” refers to pricing and financials, research and development, production and inventory, or shipping and fulfillment. When you start a business, you’re likely wearing all of the hats within your company. As you start to scale and grow, you’ll need to start delegating to reach that next level in your business. When you’ve reached this point, it’s time for you to decide what your zone of genius is within your company. By doing so, you’re able to really focus on what you’re doing instead of struggling to keep up with all the hats. If this episode resonates with you, you might also be at a point where you’re a perfect candidate for our new Product Biz Accelerator course. 359. Top 4 Mistakes We See Biz Owners Make as They Scale to Six Figures
When we help product bosses level up their businesses, especially those scaling to six figures, there are four common mistakes we see. Let's dive in to see what these mistakes are and how to address them so that you can take your business to the next level. To start off, it’s important to know what “leveling up” actually means. Many people assume it’s increasing your sales, but that isn’t necessarily the case. Sometimes, it’s more important to refine what you’re doing and make it more profitable or streamlined before you start thinking about increasing sales, finding more customers, and so on. It’s easy to spread yourself too thin, and if you don’t have your systems in place, then you won’t be building your business on a solid foundation.More customers can be a great thing, but have you considered alternatives like selling more to your existing customers? We tend to think about social media in terms of algorithms and getting our brand in front of new eyes, but why not think about reminding your current customers that they haven’t purchased anything in a while? This is why we say “refine down to scale up!”Another common mistake product bosses make is trying to launch without a runway. Now, don’t get too caught up in the word “launch,” because this doesn’t just refer to launching your business, it refers to launching anything from a new product to an event or even a sale. Instead of just dropping a new collection, have you tried first building some suspense and anticipation around it? Let your customers know that something is coming, and give them time to get excited about it!These are just two of the mistakes we address in this episode, so make sure you tune in to hear about all four! It could make all the difference as you take your company to the next level.Brought to you by the Shop 1 in 5™ Pledge! 358. The Most Successful People Ask Themselves These Four Questions
When people think about success, they often think about intelligence. But there are lots of different types of intelligence. We most commonly think about IQ, but that only shows one small piece of the picture. Another type of intelligence we often hear about is your EQ. That’s your emotional intelligence.Today, we want to introduce you to the concept of the RQ. This is your relationship intelligence. One of the most important factors when it comes to success is how well someone builds and manages their relationships. Relationships cover a lot of different things you might not think about. For example, it’s easy to forget that social media is a form of socializing, and that means we might not realize how much of our mental or emotional energy is being drained when we spend too much time there. It’s worth really thinking about how and who you engage with online. It’s easy to look for validation online, especially as entrepreneurs, when we should really be looking for it within ourselves. As a product boss, you’re probably going to start hiring people at some point (if you haven’t already). Again, our relationship with our employees is one that we really need to be aware of. So many people forget that professional boundaries must be set, and that unfortunately, your staff cannot be your biz besties.Don’t worry, though. It’s completely normal to want to treat people like your friends. Being an entrepreneur can feel lonely. There’s so much responsibility and pressure resting on your shoulders. Just remember that you’re not alone. That’s why we built this community, so that likeminded product bosses can share with and support one another. There are four questions to ask yourself to fully understand your relationships and realign your success. And we take you through each one of them in this episode, so what are you waiting for? Listen now!Brought to you by the Shop 1 in 5™ Pledge! Commit to making 1 in 5 of your purchases from a small business, whether online or offline. 357. Help! I Feel Like I'm Drowning and I'm the Bottleneck in My Business!
What we’re talking about today doesn’t come down to focus or motivation. It doesn’t matter how hard you work, there comes a time when you will hit capacity. As a solopreneur, that capacity may be physical, mental, or emotional, but the one thing that all of these have in common is that it leads to you becoming the bottleneck of your business. Let's discuss how you can move past this.So what is capacity, really? Maybe you’re a maker and your demand is taking over your supply. If you’re struggling to make enough of your product or even have difficulty with packaging and shipping it, in a timely manner, then you've hit your capacity!Or maybe you’re keeping up with fulfilling your orders but it doesn’t leave you with time for anything else. You need to work on your marketing or bookkeeping, but you don’t have a spare minute in the day. If this sounds familiar then, once again, you're at capacity and you've become the bottleneck in your business. You may find that your capacity is more emotional or mental rather than physical, which is completely normal. But it's important to remember, that once you hit these capacities you must focus on refining and stabilizing before scaling so that your business can continue to grow on a solid infrastructure. When you start out as a solopreneur, you’re doing everything. You’re the one making all the decisions and making everything happen. However, as you enter the growth stage in your business, oftentimes you will need to up level your mindset as well as move past those limiting beliefs you have to remove yourself from being the bottleneck of your business. After listening to this episode, if you're still struggling and want help refining and growing your business to that next level, then be sure to jump on the waitlist for our brand new group coaching program, The Product Biz Accelerator.Brought to you by the Shop 1 in 5™ Pledge! 356. Mom Secrets with Cat & Nat of Mom Truths
Cat and Nat, authors of the bestselling, Mom Truths, join us for a very special, eye-opening, and hilarious episode of The Product Boss to unpack their new book, Mom Secrets, which offers a raw, candid look at what it’s really like to be a mom.So often, we’re our own worst critics. Most parenting books are advice-driven, but this is designed to stop unnecessary feelings of guilt, negative body image, and more. Their work is a reminder that there’s no such thing as perfection. So long as you raise your kids with joy, you should definitely give yourself a break! Cat and Nat are awesome company and some of the confessions in their new book are truly great because, not only are they really funny, but they help to normalize these things we all go through as parents – but sometimes feel too ashamed to admit. That means that they tackle some heavy subjects, but it’s all with such a fun, light spin that it puts a little spring in your step. A lot of the confessions came from audience members at some of their live shows who would drop them into a fishbowl anonymously, so believe us when we say that some of these are genuinely hilarious – dad crushes, anyone? There might be a lot of laughs in this one, but today’s message is ultimately about letting life happen and dealing with it as it comes. That’s a really important piece of truth that more of us need to remember. Brought to you by the Shop 1 in 5™ Pledge!
