The Empire Club of Canada Presents: The Right Honourable Beverley McLachlin, P.C., Chief Justice of Canada With The First Event of our Sesquicentennial Series: Celebrating Canada's 150th Anniversary Canada's Legal System at 150: Fostering Canadian Democracy Through an Independent Judiciary. An independent judiciary is an essential feature of a free, democratic society. Canada's sesquicentennial presents an opportunity to take stock of this cornerstone of Canadian democracy. Judicial independence has characterized the Canadian constitutional order even as the country evolved from a system of Parliamentary sovereignty under the British North America Act, 1867, to one of constitutional supremacy under the Constitution Act, 1982 and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Through a survey of this evolution, the address will draw attention to current concerns relating to judicial independence in Canada, and to the need to better understand this most fundamental of constitutional principles. Chief Justice McLachlin spent her formative years in Pincher Creek, Alberta and was educated at the University of Alberta, where she received a B.A., Honours, in Philosophy in 1965. She pursued her studies at the University of Alberta and, in 1968, received both an M.A. in Philosophy and an LL.B. She was called to the Alberta Bar in 1969 and to the British Columbia Bar in 1971 and practised law in Alberta and British Columbia. Commencing in 1974, she taught for seven years in the Faculty of Law at the University of British Columbia as a tenured Associate Professor. Her judicial career began in April 1981 when she was appointed to the Vancouver County Court. In September 1981, she was appointed to the Supreme Court of British Columbia. She was elevated to the British Columbia Court of Appeal in December of 1985 and was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of British Columbia in September 1988. Seven months later, in April 1989, she was sworn in as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada. On January 7, 2000, she was appointed Chief Justice of Canada. She is the first woman in Canada to hold this position. In addition to her judicial duties at the Supreme Court, the Chief Justice chairs the Canadian Judicial Council, the Advisory Council of the Order of Canada and the Board of Go Judicial Institute. Thomas G. Wellner, President and Chief Executive Officer, Revera | May 30, 2016

The Empire Club of Canada Presents: Thomas G. Wellner, President and Chief Executive Officer, Revera Ironically, as Canada's population rapidly ages, new research from Revera, Canada's leading owner, operator and investor in the senior living sector reveals that ageism continues to be a tolerated and pervasive form of social prejudice in Canada today. While Canadians unanimously agree that independence and choice are essential at any age, troubling gaps exist between how young adults and seniors view the issue, and many older Canadians report that they regularly experience ageist behavior in their daily lives. As society grapples with the rising costs of caring for our aging population it must also confront the importance of how this care is perceived by older Canadians, and the impact this has on their physical and mental health. However, while many issues related to seniors care will require significant government policy as well as public and private investment, Thomas Wellner, President and CEO of Revera, argues that the solution to ageism is within reach. Wellner will speak to new research that sheds light on this major societal issue, and share his company's recommendations on the way forward. Biography: Mr. Wellner has extensive global experience in biotech, pharmaceuticals and health care services. Since joining Revera in early 2014, he has led the organization through transformational change, developing the company's strategic direction to grow, innovate and lead in the sector. He has worked with a number of strategic partners in Canada, the U.S. and the U.K. to grow Revera's reach from approximately 250 to more than 500 properties internationally. Revera serves more than 50,000 seniors through its portfolio and offers seniors' apartments, independent living, assisted living, memory care and long term care. With approximately 45,000 employees dedicated to providing quality care and service, Revera's vision is to celebrate the ageless spirit of people through service and innovation. Revera is committed to challenging ageism through Age is More, the company's social cause of choice. Speaker: Thomas G. Physician Assisted Dying: Navigating a New Canadian Right ‎| April 26, 2016

The Empire Club of Canada Presents: Physician Assisted Dying Panel: Navigating a New Canadian Right ‎ On Feb. 6, 2015, the Supreme Court of Canada struck down the country's Criminal Code prohibition on physician assisted dying. In their unanimous decision, the justices on the high court ruled that the decades old ban violated Canadians Charter rights to life, liberty and security of the person, and thus, it could not stand. When it comes into effect in June, the Supreme Court's will establish choice in dying as a right for all Canadians. But whether desperately ill patients who qualify under the criteria, set out in the judgment, competent adult patients who are suffering intolerably as the result of a grievous and irremediable medical condition and who clearly consent to the termination of life remains to be seen. Right to die activists charge that the federal government's new assisted dying bill is overly restrictive and doesn't meet minimum standard laid out in the Supreme Court's decision. The wording of Bill 14 raises questions about whether Canadians with excruciating chronic illnesses but who are not actively dying will be forced to endure many months or even years of unwanted intolerable suffering because their natural death is not reasonably foreseeable. Other people, not surprisingly, view this proposed new law as a slippery slope with potential unforeseen consequences. With less than two months until the Supreme Court's decision comes effect, a panel will explore what the new legislation will mean for the right to die movement in Canada and for ordinary Canadians who are exploring their options for end of life. Questions that may be addressed include: Who will have access? Will the rules for assisted dying vary greatly from province to province? Where do we go from here? What does it mean for us as Canadians to have, if worse comes to w our lives? Panelists will include: Dr. James Downar, critical and palliative care physician, University Health Network, and program director for the Conjoint Program in Palliative Care Medicine, University of Toronto; Shanaaz Gokool, CEO, Dying With Dignity Canada and Piya Chattopadhyay, Host, CBC Radio and TVO Television.
