The Empire Club of Canada Presents:  Kenneth Courtis, Chairman, Starfort Investment Holdings On Have We Entered a G2 World Kenneth Courtis is an economist, entrepreneur and adviser to world leaders. Since leaving Canada as a graduate student he has spent most of his working career in Tokyo. But having watched economic progress in China, and done business there, he foresees sweeping implications for the world. China's economy is already second in scope to only that of the United States, and it could be the largest by 2030. The country's pace of innovation is ranked ahead of all other developing nations, and only four notches behind that of Canada. Already China is too big to bully, too big to ignore, Courtis warns. He has urged the Trudeau government to re establish a dialogue of mutual respect, disregarding any objections from the United States. He has suggested that Canada apply to join other developed nations in the Asian International Infrastructure Bank, which aims to invest some four trillion dollars in infrastructure projects over the next 10 to 12 years. Friction is evident within China, with posters screaming for democracy. Concerns have been raised about Chinese investment in foreign technology firms. But Courtis says the Chinese government has become far less overbearing, far less oppressive. Regardless, he warns we must prepare for a Group of Two or G2 world, with China and the U.S. vying to be greatest. The Empire Club of Canada Presents: Michael Burns, CEO, Invictus Games Toronto 2017 Michael Burns is CEO of Invictus Games Toronto 2017, the largest international adaptive sport competition in the world featuring ill and injured soldiers and veterans. Burns brings to Invictus more than 20 years of experience in marketing, financial services, technology and entrepreneurship. Burns took a leave of absence from his role as Vice-President, Corporate Development of AudienceView to head up the 2017 Invictus Games. Prior to that, he was President of Thornmark Asset Management and President of Clearsight Wealth Management Inc. He is co-founder of the True Patriot Love (TPL) Foundation, which supports Canada’s military, veterans and their families by funding programs for mental health, physical rehabilitation, career transition and family services. He is Past Chair of the Michael Garron Hospital Foundation Board (formerly the Toronto East General Hospital Board Foundation). He successfully led the team that secured the Garrons’ $50-million donation, the largest gift ever made to a Canadian community-teaching hospital. Burns is also on the Board of the Canadian Institute for Military & Veteran Health Research and is a member of the Board of Directors of two world-class entertainment venues in Toronto: Roy Thomson Hall and Massey Hall. In 2016, Canada’s Governor-General, on behalf of the Queen, awarded Burns The Meritorious Service Cross for his work with military families. In 2012, he was awarded the Canadian Forces Medallion for Distinguished Service, the military’s highest honour for a civilian. That year, he was also awarded a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal honouring significant contributions and achievements by Canadians. In 2010, he was named one of Canada’s Top 40 Under 40. The Empire Club of Canada Presents: Honourable Michael Chan, Minister of International Trade On Securing Ontario’s Long Term Economic Growth and Stability Through Free Trade and Diversification Michael Chan was first elected to the Ontario legislature as the MPP for Markham in a byelection in 2007. He was then elected as the MPP for Markham—Unionville in 2007, and re-elected in 2011 and 2014. He is currently serving as Minister of International Trade, and prior to that was Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and International Trade. During his tenure at Queen’s Park, Chan has also served as Minister of Revenue and Minister of Citizenship and Immigration. In the latter role, he focused on enhancing Ontario’s ability to attract jobs and skilled employees and worked to expand the province’s bridge training programs that assist newcomers with economic integration. Prior to embarking on his political career, Chan — who emigrated from Hong Kong more than 40 years ago and has lived in Markham since 1995 — owned and operated an insurance brokerage firm. Chan and his wife, Elaine, live in Markham with their two sons, Alex and Brian. Recent data have confirmed this: in 2016, 42 percent of Canada's totaljob growth happened in Québec. Of the 85,400 full time jobs added, many were in smart sectors such as digital entertainment, virtual reality technologies, genomics, and artificial release of Québec's two new strategies one for Research and Innovation and the other for the Life Science and in addition to its upcoming Digital Strategy, Québec is taking definitive steps to stand at the forefront of the global smart economy. BIOGRAPHY: Born in Montréal in 1974, Dominique Anglade is a businesswoman and politician. With a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering from the Ecole polytechnique de Montréal and a Master's in Business Administration, MBA from HEC Montréal, she began her career as an engineer in 1996 at Procter and Gamble. Two years later, at the age of 24, Ms. Anglade was promoted head of a production branch in which she managed more than 100 employees. From 2000 to 2003, she was employed by Nortel Networks, which gave her the opportunity to specialize in the strategic management of the supply chain and global market forecasts. In 2004, she became the company's Québec Director of Public and External Affairs. From 2005 to 2012, Ms. Anglade was part of the McKinsey and Company firm, where she acquired renowned expertise in the area of major transformations within organizations. Until recently, she was President and CEO of Montréal International, an organization focused on attracting foreign investments, international organizations, and strategic talent to the Greater Montréal area. Over the past 20 years, tribute has often been paid to the community involvement of this mother of three children. She has sat on the boards of some 15 organizations, including Centraide and the CHU Sainte Justine Foundation, and chaired several of them. Ms. Anglade also cofounded KANPE, a foundation that provides support for vulnerable Haitian families to help them achieve financial autonomy. Over the course of her career, she has received more than 25 awards, including the Desjardins Emeritas Award, given to outstanding MBA program graduates. The Empire Club of Canada Presents:  The Honourable Eric Hoskins, Minister of Health and Long Term Care With Ontario’s Vision for Transforming Health Care Dr. Eric Hoskins was first elected to the Ontario legislature as the MPP for St. Paul's in 2009. He was re elected in 2011 and 2014. Hoskins currently serves as Minister of Health and Long Term Care. Hoskins was previously appointed as Minister of Economic Development, Trade and Employment in February 2013. He has also previously served as Minister of Children and Youth Services and Minister of Citizenship and Immigration. Hoskins is also a renowned humanitarian, family doctor and a proud Ontarian with a long and dedicated record of public service. After finishing his medical studies at McMaster University, and subsequently at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, Hoskins spent nearly a decade as a doctor and humanitarian in war torn regions in Africa and around the world. From 1997 to 2000, he served as the senior advisor to then Foreign Minister Lloyd Axworthy on issues such as human rights, child soldiers, peacekeeping and the landmines ban. He and his wife, Dr. Samantha Nutt, founded the international charity War Child Canada to help hundreds of thousands of children in war affected regions across the globe. Hoskins was also Advisor to the Office of the Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict at the United Nations in 2002 and 2003. Hoskins has been recognized for his humanitarian work and public service. In 2008, he was invested as an Officer of the Order of Canada.
