As the former CEO of the Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance, Mitzie worked to solve some of our toughest social, economic and environmental challenges. She was also previously the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of the Toronto Community Housing Corporation, Vice-President with Goodwill Industries and a Regional Director at Bell Canada.
Mitzie and her family immigrated to Canada from Jamaica in 1975. She grew up in Scarborough, graduated from U of T (Scarborough Campus) with a BA, and recently completed her MBA from the Rotman School of Management.
As part of Kathleen Wynne’s team, Mitzie will bring people together to solve problems, and to create jobs and opportunity in our community.

Bob Chiarelli was first elected to the Ontario legislature in 1987 as the MPP for Ottawa West. He was re elected in 1990 and 1995. Chiarelli was elected as the MPP for Ottawa West Nepean in 2010, then re elected in 2011 and 2014. Chiarelli currently serves as Minister of Infrastructure. He has also served as Minister of Energy, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, Minister of Infrastructure and Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation. As Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation, he was responsible for implementing Ontario's first 10 year infrastructure plan, Building Together. Chiarelli also served as the Regional Chair of Ottawa Carleton and was later elected as the first Mayor of the amalgamated City of Ottawa. In those roles, he championed expansion of light rail and other public transit, new recreational and health care infrastructure and maintaining Ottawa's triple A fiscal rating. Prior to entering politics, Chiarelli ran a community law practice for 18 years. During his break from politics, he served as Vice-Chair of the Royal Ottawa Foundation for Mental Health, member of the board of Peace Camp Ottawa, a fundraising volunteer with Citizen Advocacy and a Senior Fellow in the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Ottawa. Bob lives in Ottawa with his partner, Randi, and has five children and two grandchildren.

Dr. Michael Apkon, MBA, MD, PhD, President and Chief Executive Officer, The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) On Canada’s Kids at Risk: Systems to Improve Children’s Health
Dr. Apkon is a physician executive and physician scientist serving in C- level leadership roles at several top academic hospitals in the United States and Canada. He has served as the CEO at SickKids, since January 2014. In that capacity, he leads a 300 bed hospital staffed by 10,000 employees, scientists, medical staff, students and volunteers with a $1 BB budget. SickKids is recognized as one of the world’s top children’s hospitals, Canada’s most research-intensive hospital, and a highly successful clinical, educational, and research organization. In addition to his role at SickKids, Dr. Apkon Chairs the Ontario Provincial Council on Maternal and Child Health, a provincial program of the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care aiming to foster the evolution of a more effective provincial healthcare system for women and children. He also serves as a Director of MaRS Innovation, a commercialization cooperative and incubator for the life sciences and technology industries in the greater Toronto area.
Dr. Apkon has extensive international management experience in both pediatric and adult- oriented healthcare, working with organizations and governments in the UK, Europe, China, Africa, and the Middle East as well as North America. He has consulted widely on business development, capacity development, and management systems as well as quality and safety improvement. He is an expert in strategy, systems development, and operations management, as well as the application of lean and high reliability organizational thinking to drive improvements in quality, safety, and efficiency.
In addition to deep expertise in healthcare strategy and management Dr. Apkon has considerable experience with corporate governance and with government relations. In his current role, he reports directly to the Board of Trustees and has directly supported the governing bodies of his prior employers. He has also served as a Trustee for not-for-profit healthcare organizations and for other charitable organizations as well as serving as a Director for MaRS Innovation, Director for a pre-revenue medical device company, and as an Officer for the Council of Academic Hospitals of Ontario. Current and prior roles have resulted in considerable experience working with Provincial and State governments as well as with Federal and international governments.
Prior to coming to SickKids, Dr. Apkon was Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs and the Chief Medical Officer for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the University of Pennsylvania as well as a practicing Paediatric Intensive Care specialist. Premier Notley’s passion for politics was fuelled by her parents. Grant Notley was the leader of Alberta’s first NDP opposition. Before she was 10 years old, Rachel attended protest marches with her mother Sandy. Social justice is the Notley way.
Born in Edmonton and raised in Fairview, Premier Notley obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science at the University of Alberta and a law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School. She practiced labour law and workers’ compensation advocacy and also served as an adviser to British Columbia’s attorney general.
Premier Notley was first elected as an NDP MLA in 2008, serving the constituency of Edmonton-Strathcona, where she still resides with her husband, Lou Arab, and their two teenage children.

Dominic Barton is the Global Managing Partner of McKinsey & Company. In his 30 years with the firm, Dominic has advised clients in a range of industries including banking, consumer goods, high tech and industrials. Prior to his current role, Dominic was based in Shanghai as McKinsey’s Asia Chairman from 2004 to 2009 and led the Korea office from 2000 to 2004.
He is the Chair of the Canadian Minister of Finance’s Advisory Council on Economic Growth and the Chair of the Seoul International Business Advisory Council. He is also a Trustee of the Brookings Institution, a member of the Singapore Economic Development Board’s International Advisory Council, and a member of the boards of Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York City and the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada.
Dominic is the Co-Chair of the ‘Focusing Capital on the Long Term’ initiative. The initiative seeks to develop practical structures, metrics and approaches for longer-term behaviours in the investment and business worlds.
Dominic has authored more than 80 articles on the role of business in society, leadership, financial services, Asia, history and the issues and opportunities facing markets worldwide. Dominic is a co-author, with Roberto Newell and Greg Wilson, of Dangerous Markets: Managing in Financial Crises (Wiley & Sons, 2002), China Vignettes: An Inside Look at China (Talisman, 2007) and co-author with Dezso Horvath and Matthias Kipping of Reimagining Capitalism (Oxford University Press, 2016).
Dominic has received multiple awards for his business leadership and contributions to the communities in which he has lived and worked. In February 2013 Dominic received the Order of Civil Merit (Peony Medal) from former President Lee of South Korea and in August 2014 he was awarded the Singaporean Public Service Star (Distinguished Friends of Singapore). He is a Rhodes Trustee and an Honorary Fellow at Brasenose College, Oxford. Dominic is also an Adjunct Professor at Tsinghua University, Beijing.

Mayo Schmidt is the President and CEO of Hydro One Limited. Prior to joining Hydro One, Mr. Schmidt served as President and CEO at Viterra, Inc., a global integrated agriculture export firm headquartered in Canada. During his tenure, Viterra grew to operate in 14 countries with industrial assets and a supply chain to 50 countries. Mr. Schmidt is currently a director of Agrium, Inc., a global agriculture firm where he serves as the Chairman of the Corporate Governance and Nominating Committee and is a member of the Environment, Health, Safety and Security Committee. Mr. Schmidt is a member of Washburn University's Foundation Board of Trustees and the Lincoln Society. He is a committee member of Harvard University Private and Public, Scientific, Academic and Consumer Food Policy Group. Mr. Schmidt received his Honorary Doctorate of Commerce in 2016 and his B.B.A. in 1980 from Washburn University. Chief Justice McLachlin spent her formative years in Pincher Creek, Alberta and was educated at the University of Alberta, where she received a B.A. (Honours) in Philosophy in 1965. She pursued her studies at the University of Alberta and, in 1968, received both an M.A. in Philosophy and an LL.B. She was called to the Alberta Bar in 1969 and to the British Columbia Bar in 1971 and practised law in Alberta and British Columbia. Commencing in 1974, she taught for seven years in the Faculty of Law at the University of British Columbia as a tenured Associate Professor. Her judicial career began in April 1981 when she was appointed to the Vancouver County Court. In September 1981, she was appointed to the Supreme Court of British Columbia. She was elevated to the British Columbia Court of Appeal in December of 1985 and was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of British Columbia in September 1988. Seven months later, in April 1989, she was sworn in as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada. On January 7, 2000, she was appointed Chief Justice of Canada. She is the first woman in Canada to hold this position. In addition to her judicial duties at the Supreme Court, the Chief Justice chairs the Canadian Judicial Council, the Advisory Council of the Order of Canada and the Board of Governors of the National Judicial Institute. The Chief Justice is the author of numerous articles and publications.

This event is part of The Empire Club of Canada’s Sesquicentennial Series, celebrating Canada’s 150th Anniversary of Confederation and honouring our great country. The luncheon will feature Lou Eccleston, CEO, TMX Group Limited. The luncheon will highlight the 165th birthday for TMX Group Limited and the TMX Group’s outlook for the next few years.
Lou Eccleston is Chief Executive Officer of TMX Group Limited. He joined TMX Group on November 3, 2014. Mr. Eccleston is a member of the TMX Group Board of Directors; he is also a member of the Board of Directors of several TMX Group subsidiaries, including TSX Inc., TSX Venture Exchange Inc., Montreal Exchange and NGX. Mr. Eccleston has more than 30 years of extensive experience gained in senior leadership roles in the information services, financial technology and capital market services sectors. Prior to joining TMX Group, he was President, S&P Capital IQ and Chairman of the Board, S&P Dow Jones Indices, which are business lines of McGraw Hill Financial. He was with that organization for six years. While there, Mr. Eccleston was named to the Institutional Investor “Tech 50” in 2012, 2013 and 2014.
Previously, Mr. Eccleston was at Thomson Financial for four years in the roles of President of Global Sales, Marketing & Services and President of the Banking and Brokerage Group. Mr. Eccleston was at Bloomberg LP for 14 years, where he held a number of roles including chief executive of Bloomberg Tradebook for 6 years. He also served as Chairman and CEO of Pivot Inc., a capital market software services company. Mr. Eccleston earned a BA in Economics from Drew University in Madison, NJ as well as a MBA from La Salle University in Philadelphia, PA.

One of Toronto's best known business reporters, Mike Eppel of 680 News, will sit down with the CEO of Imperial Tobacco Canada, Jorge Araya, to discuss these issues and look at where this industry is headed in the next 10 years. Some of what is happening will surprise people who tend not to focus on this industry in spite of its enormous size here in Canada and around the world.
Jorge Araya started his career with British American Tobacco Chile in 1995 and held various marketing roles in Chile and Mexico prior to being appointed as Marketing Director Southern Cone and Brazil. In 2012, he joined the Americas Regional Leadership team, where he successfully led the marketing growth strategy through significant portfolio evolution, as well as trade strategy and talent capability development. He was appointed as President and CEO, BAT Canada, Imperial Tobacco Canada, in 2015 where he continues to make a demonstrable contribution to the transformation of this complex and often controversial business.
Mike Eppel has been reporting on the financial markets and corporate news for more than 25 years. As a graduate of Ryerson's Radio and Television Arts Program, Mike has worked as a markets reporter for the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture. He was also one of the original business reporters for 680 News when the station launched in summer of 1993. From 1999 to 2004, Mike was a business reporter for CTV News Channel, CTV National News, CFTO Toronto and BNN. He returned to 680 News as Senior Business Editor in 2004 overseeing the expansion of business coverage to Rogers All News radio stations across Canada and Sportsnet Radio, The Fan 590. He is also seen on City TV's Breakfast Television in Toronto, Montreal and Calgary. Highlights of his career have included reporting from the 1998 Atlanta Summer Olympics, the Muskoka G8 Summit and numerous Ontario and Federal budgets. Mike was born and raised in Tillsonburg, Ontario on a tobacco farm. He started in broadcasting at the age of 16 as a DJ and newsreader at the local radio station, CKOT. His broadcast travels have also taken him to radio stations in Wingham and Barrie. He also attended the University of Western Ontario, completing fourth year courses in History and Political Science.
