My Canada is Opening Up | June 29, 2020

The Empire Club of Canada Presents:  My Canada is Opening Up As Canadians prepare to celebrate Canada Day this year, their country is opening up in many ways. Socially, three months of lockdown have given many more time to share their time and thoughts with their families, friends and neighbours, in physical and virtual ways. Economically, working and shopping is springing back to life. Within days Canadians can start to travel to other provinces and territories to enjoy at first hand the local delights that their richly diverse country contains. Internationally, they look forward to the time when they can also welcome tourists from abroad, and the immigrants who have chosen to come and contribute to Canada as their new home. Three years after Canada's 150 birthday  celebrations in 2017, it is time to hear first hand from distinguished Canadian leaders across the land from east to west how their new Canada of today is opening up. The Evolution of an Economic Engine | June 5, 2020

The Empire Club of Canada Presents: The Evolution of an Economic Engine: Assessing the State of Canadian Advanced Manufacturing Dwindling cash flows, ongoing skills shortages and disruptions to supply chains. Productions lines shut down while others retooled to make new, vitally needed health and safety products. Orders cancelled while oil and gas prices plummet. Expectations of agility in the face of an unprecedented shock and an uncertain future. Welcome to the world of Canadian advanced manufacturing in the time of COVID-19. There is no question companies across Canada have stepped up over the past few months. We have been inspired by the stories of their innovation as they create new technologies and scale up production of equipment and medical devices central to fighting the pandemic. We have also been reminded of the extent to which we rely on other countries for critical goods and supplies. With provincial economic reopening plans slowly unfurled, many are looking to the second half of 2020 as key period for the sector’s recovery. But what that recovery looks like is unclear. Will governments continue to bring forward new policies and supports designed to increase in-country production of goods that companies long ago stopped making here in Canada? Is long-term reinvention really an option for many companies? Will their corporate clients and consumers have the funds to start buying again? And, how will physical distancing rules in plants impact efforts to restore productivity? Moderator: Peter Hatges, Partner, National Sector Leader, Automotive, KPMG in Canada, & Managing Director KPMG Corporate Finance Inc. Panelists: Jayson Myers, Chief Executive Officer, Next Generation Manufacturing Canada Diane Reko, President & Chief Executive Officer, Reko International Group Inc. Flavio Volpe, President, Automotive Parts Manufacturers' Association (APMA) *The content presented is free of charge but please note that the Empire Club of Canada retains copyright. The Construction Sector Post COVID19: What is the “new normal” | May 11, 2020

The Empire Club of Canada Presents: The Construction Sector Post COVID19: What is the “new normal” During the Covid 19 pandemic, construction was unique in comparison to most sectors in that some elements were deemed essential, while others were not.  While the dividing line between who was essential and who wasn’t was the source of controversy, for those operating, health and safety measures were put in place to secure sites and protect the workforce. As we move beyond the pandemic to re-opening our economy, what is the “new normal” for this sector? Are the existing health and safety measures enough? Should the construction sector scale up more quickly than the rest of the economy?  Will construction projects be the path back to economic recovery and can the sector ramp up safely to meet this need? Moderator: Ana Bailão, Deputy Mayor of Toronto Panelists: Gianni Agozzino, President and Partner, Network Mechanical Inc.; President, Metropolitan Plumbing and Heating Contractors Association (MPHCA) Patrick J.
