From her current position looking after a seemingly unending crew of animals on her farm (rescue dogs - which you will hear from, alpacas, llamas, boars, ponies, horses, chickens and for sure there are more than that), which was preceded by her run on the chaotic and awesome and also very zoo-like Soccer AM (which changed and influenced the TV game in huge ways), she has been sports and animal-adjacent for a good portion of said career. (aka Pip's new/long time best mate!)Since destroying their recent farewell gig schedule, The Maccabees have been exploring all manner of individual and collaborative paths - it was an extremely heavy, emotional time but has left them with a world of creativity open to them. Hugo has made the absolute most of this, with the Maccas studio leaving an open door to him and his ideas, and here you can hear him relate to Pip (and YOU!) how his world has changed since the amiable disbanding. It's fascinating to hear he and Pip exchange notes on how long it takes to make songs, how these songs get tightened up to perfection in the touring process long after the album's release, fashioning a studio from a laptop to a fully furnished elaborate ordeal, daytime radio play and what that means exactly, the Brighton scene, how Hugo and his brother have become ambassadors of the MS Society, all underpinned by Pip's long running mantra which should be carved in stone somewhere - "it's not the gigs we get paid for, it's everything else..." - travel, inconvenience, all that... And what a deep, heavy and truly daring life she has led, from beginning to present day - hear her recall some chills-inducing tales and truly unique meetings, from getting in deep into situations with Isis commanders, her interview with 'Jihadi John', and her career covering all manner of terrorist activities over the years, and SO much more, made all the more fascinating due to her being Muslim and female, which positions her uniquely for her line of writing and interviewing. It's also fascinating hearing her thoughts on what creates a perfect situation for men to become radicalised, and how it can mainly stem from a broken family life. This is an absolutely gripping conversation, to which this writeup would never do justice, and it's a wonderful commentary companion to her book 'I Was Told To Come Alone', which you should (and I'm sure will) snap up at your nearest convenience. From the issues raised in portraying a violently racist policeman in 'Detroit' (and the poignancy of the film itself), a powerful back and forth is triggered with Pip and Will, which is the beauty of films like this and how an open discussion can be had which leads into so much more besides - race, politics, society, it's all here. On top of that, you'll hear his tale from the very early days back in 'School Of Comedy' and how his young foot in the acting world's door gave him the necessary inspiration for a full on career, Will drops some gems from his unique perspective on his experience with acting and his ascent from those younger days right up to 'Son Of Rambow', 'The Maze Runner' and 'The Revenant', the latter of which had him up alongside Leonardo Di Caprio and Tom Hardy no less. A rich and diverse filmography right there, which has in many ways freed him from his somewhat reductive nickname of 'that Weird Eyebrow Actor'.
