In this week’s episode we discuss a spiritual text which helped bring peace to centuries of non-stop conflict only centuries later to introduce the wider world to its first taste of Taoist philosophy and make corporate ladder climbers even more insufferable than they were before; The Art of War by Sun Tzu. In this first half of the episode we unveil the historical mystery of the text’s author Sun Tzu; was he man or myth? Before wrapping up we begin discussing the first few chapters of The Art of War, how some of these strategies were used in real life wars and what has to do with the five elements. Send us comments, suggestions and ideas here! This week’s episode sees us dust off the old VHS copy of the late 90s gnostic science fiction classic “Dark City,” written and directed by Alex Proyas. This is what your mom was talking about when you told her you wanted to see ‘The Matrix’ but she said “No, we have it at home,” with some scenes almost matching shot for shot visually. Perhaps more remarkably is how Dark City tackles similar themes on loan from ancient gnostic philosophy but does so in a way faithful to its science fiction roots in German expressionism where it finds inspiration in the fertile imaginations of Fritz Lang and Albin Grau, the creators of Metropolis and Nosferatu respectively. The result is a film which beneath its slick, noir surface is a thoughtful meditation on the dark side of spirituality, evolution and the destiny of the human soul. In the first half of the show we discuss some of the occult roots of the science fiction genre itself and what it has to do with the Aeon of Horus championed by Aleister Crowley before cutting into the dense symbolism in the film’s opening using the Tarot as our guide. In this week’s episode we go so far down the rabbit hole that we encounter the mutated denizens of a lost race descended from Atlantean giants because this week we’re exploring the science-fiction world of Richard Sharp Shaver who, of all things, claimed these stories were none other than historical fact! Published in Amazing Stories Magazine in the 1940s with the help of editor Robert Palmer the Shaver Mystery took the world by storm and laid the foundation for UFOlogy and conspiracy culture that endures today. In the first half of the show we discuss Richard Shaver’s theophany of the lusty swamp witch, Nydia and how he came to know firsthand the denizens of the underworld.
