For this milestone episode we mixed things up a bit, with guest host Liz Kaelin interviewing me for the 100th Episode of The Startup Playbook Podcast.
Before we get into this episode, I just wanted to send a big thank you to all of our previous podcast guests for coming on to the show and sharing their experiences and insights and also to all of you for supporting and tuning into the show every week.
This podcast wouldn’t be where it without all of you and your messages of support over the last 2.5 years of the show. I am extremely thankful to all of you for providing 45mins of your time each week to tune in to the Startup Playbook Podcast!
I have had a few messages over the last few years from listeners wanting to hear more about some of my background and how the podcast came about. So to commemorate this milestone episode we have switched things up a bit. Some of you may know Liz Kaelin from her time as the Founder and CEO of Caitre’d which was acquired in 2017.
She is now the head of client experience at Terem Technologies and some time ago she pitched the idea of guest hosting the show and interviewing me for the 100th Episode.
So in this episode I’m on the other side of the microphone and dive into: – my lessons from starting, growing and ultimately deciding to shut down my fashion tech startup, StageLabel– how the Podcast first got started– my process for bringing world class guests on the show– how I try to stay consistent – some of my key takeaways from 100 podcast interviews
This podcast was produced by the awesome team at Playbook Media. If you would like to launch your own personal or business podcast, say hello to Rohit@playbookmedia.com.au.

My guest for Episode 98 of The Startup Playbook Podcast is the Investment Partner at Jelix Ventures, Ian Gardiner.
Ian is best known for his role at Amazon Web Services as the Head of Business Development for Startups in Australia and New Zealand, but prior to this he was the founder of several startups himself.
Ian was the Founder and Managing Director of “Last Orders”, a UK based startup that raised GBP2.5M but as Ian describes it himself, they built the supply but the expected demand never came through.
Ian then moved to Australia and along with his co-founder Ron Mcullough launched Viocorp, run-in the company for the next 12 years as it’s co-founder and CEO.
He is now an Investment Partner at Jelix Ventures, a fund that he setup with his wife Andrea, after they had both spent spending several years successfully identifying and investing in early-stage high technology companies.
Alongside his role at Jelix, Ian is also the Co-founder of Innovation Bay, a community and networking group for businesses, entrepreneurs and investors and he also hosts the highly successful Open The Pod Bay Doors podcast.
I was really excited to speak with someone who had spent so much of his time and energy in building the ecosystem here as well as seeing first hand a range of successful and unsuccessful companies being built from the ground up across his various ventures. In this interview we spoke about:
Breeding success from implementing cultureHow Amazon approaches hiring “A players”How to stay consistentThe foundations of building successful ecosystems3 key ingredients shared by successful founders

Podcast
My guest for Episode 96 of The Startup Playbook Podcast is Tom Crago, the CEO of game development studio, Tantalus Media.
With an initial passion for athletics, Tom spent a few years at university, holding arts, business and law degrees as a way of buying himself some more time to keep training
After graduating and working at a Law Firm, Tom quickly realised that this wasn’t what he wanted to do long term and left to join a creative agency.
While he was over there, he found Tantalus Media and was deeply impressed with the technology they were building. So naturally as a 25 year old, he arranged a meeting with them, told them they needed help with the business and pitched to become their CEO and own 10% of the business.
Much to his surprise the owners agreed, only for Tom to later find out the company owed over $500,0000 to the Australian Taxation Office.
Giving himself 6 months to turn it around, Tom flew to Japan and sealed a deal to make a game for Gameboy Advance that would be launched by Nintendo.
Since then Tantalus has gone on to develop successful franchises such as Top Gear Rally, Spongebob and Pony Friends as well as in more recent times focusing on console games such as Zelda and Sonic Maniac.
We covered a lot of ground in this interview including:
Building products and hiring tech talent as a non-technical founderBalancing short and long term goals The future of gamingSelling through relationships

My guest for Episode 95 of The Startup Playbook Podcast is investor turned entrepreneur, Tom Davies.
Unlike the traditional career path of moving from entrepreneurship to investing, Tom started his career as an investor with the Netus Fund in 2007, alongside well known local VC’s Daniel Petre and Craig Blair who has been on the show before.
Alongside operating as a VC fund, Netus was also involved in helping launch successful US based companies into the Australian market.
Between 1999 and 2012 when it was acquired by Fairfax, Netus helped launch companies such as MSN, eBay, Monster and Ticketek into the Australian market.
After a few years with Netus and in the middle of the GFC (Global Financial Crisis), Tom decided to venture out and build his own companies; launching Compare Courses, one of Australia’s largest education search websites, reaching over 250,000 potential students every month and Chappelli cycles, the first Australian bike company to retail bicycles direct to consumer online.
Tom now spends his time as the COO of Verso Learning, an online resource for school teachers to increase student engagement and develop critical and creative thinking skills.
In this interview we discussed:
Tom’s lessons from both sides of the table as an entrepreneur and investorThe importance of perseverance and persistenceHow to identify and focus on the right metricsThe challenges of operating in competitive marketsHandling failure and the process of shutting down a company

My guest for Episode 93 of The Startup Playbook Podcast is Chike Ukaegbu, a 35 year old entrepreneur, educator and now Presidential Candidate for the 2019 Nigerian elections.
Entrepreneurship to me is about solving problems and no one personifies this more than Chike.
Chike moved from Nigeria to New York at the age of 19 to study biomedical engineering at the City College of New York before continuing on his studies at Cornell, UPenn and Stanford studying Leadership, Business and Venture Capital.
After leaving his studies he wanted to combine his passions on empowering disadvantaged people, STEM and tech and as a result started a technology accelerator called Startup52 – which was the first diversity focused accelerator of it’s kind in the world
Chike has translated these experiences and background to his new position as a presidential candidate for the 2019 Nigerian elections, becoming the youngest presidential candidate in the history of the country.
We discussed a range of topics in this interview including:– How to find and pursue your passion– How diversity drives innovation and profitability– Preparing for a future with AI– What made him run for president of Nigeria

My guest for Episode 91 of The Startup Playbook Podcast is Jenn Lim, the CEO and CHO (Chief Happiness Officer) of Delivering Happines, a company she and Tony Hsieh (CEO of Zappos.com) co-founded to inspire science-based happiness, passion and purpose at work, home and in everyday life.
Jenn has been a consultant with Zappos from its start-up days in 2003 to the several billion-dollar business it is today, including through the $1.2B acquisition of Zappos by Amazon in 2009.
In 2010, Jenn led the launch and management of Tony’s first book (Delivering Happiness) which sold over 800,000 copies internationally and hit #1 on numerous bestsellers list (including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and USA Today). It was voted one of the best business books by NPR, Inc. Magazine and the Wall Street Journal, remained on the New York Times list for 27 weeks and has been published in 20 languages around the world.
The success of the book led to Jenn and Tony starting Delivering happiness the company, a coaching and consulting business that helps create a happier culture resulting in more profitable businesses.
In this interview we deep dived into company culture discussing topics such as: – how to identify and define company values – how to hire based on your team culture – how to continue to develop and evolve the culture as the company scales
