Weekly Strides: What Makes a "Good" Runner? - Ep. 12

What makes a "good" runner? Ooof! Well, that is quite the question! I believe we each have a different answer for that one. One of the beautiful things about running is that there are so many reasons people run, and our answers may change over time, which I think is wonderful. If you asked me what a "good" runner was five years ago, I would have told you something along the lines of, someone who competes at the local level and finishes in the top third of their field. Now? I believe what makes someone a good runner is that they love what they do. It is not about where anyone finishes; I think the real challenge, and the real beauty that comes from our sport, is when we are able to hold on to that joy of being able to run because we want to, because we love it, and because it makes us a better person. It is easy to slip into complacency and take each run for granted, but what makes someone good is that they recognize and appreciate what a gift each and every run is. That could be a world class athlete who sees the Olympics as an opportunity to enjoy themselves or it could be the person who finishes last in a local parkrun. I love that about our sport! Does that definition make me a good runner? Sometimes? Working on it? ;) Thanks for listening! Weekly Strides: Is It Safe to Run during Pregnancy? Should I Start Running in My Third Trimester If I Haven't Been Running up to This Point? - Ep. 11

Is it safe to run during pregnancy? Should I start running in my third trimester if I haven't been running up to this point? I can't answer that question fully for you. And I know you're going to roll your eyes, it's the last answer you want to hear, but I'm going to revert to what you knew I might say, which is ask your doctor about your specific situation. BUT, or AND, to give you my best suggestion on what I would do, I would need to know a few things. Primarily why you have not been running up to this point. If it was something that stopped you running, I would ask you why it's okay now and if it is really worth it at this point when your body has been responding better to something else or at least been getting by with something else. Generally, yes, it is safe to run during pregnancy, and I likely have answers to all your questions about running in pregnancy and during the postpartum period in a few different places. I created an audio series that has interviews with experts that will give you all those answers; you can find that here. I also created a written pregnancy and postpartum guide with everything I have learned since having my two daughters. I asked multiple experts to answer each question I had in this guide, so it is very extensive. You can find that here. I would check those out first, and again, check in with your doctor or healthcare provider to discuss whether it is okay for you. Thanks for listening! Weekly Strides: Has the Pandemic Helped You Discover More Benefits to Your Running? - Ep. 10

Has the pandemic helped you discover more benefits to your running? Hmmm. Yes, but for me, I am not sure it is necessarily pandemic-related, but instead just general growth and maturity. That said, without the pandemic, I would likely not have created Together Runs, which yes, have been very popular, but have also been a gift to me to feel more connected to other runners. I love seeing where you are when you're running, those of you who send me your images, and what you look like when you're running. It really makes me feel that I can imagine you there and envision you there. So I feel that even when I'm training alone, I'm surrounded by other people. So that has definitely been an unexpected benefit that I feel the community even more, even though I run on my own almost every day. As for other benefits, mostly what comes to mind is just how much I love being around other runners. More than that, I mean the connection with genuinely good, loving people who make this world better, but just happen to be runners. I love the way running weaves throughout all of our lives and often becomes the analogy for many things, but it's not all of who we are. I'm not sure I would have realized how much those people meant to me without the pandemic. The pandemic also gave me the idea for Running Realized, which went on to be one of the most powerful projects I have worked on. While we are not ready for another season yet (there are a lot of factors making that tough right now), it was truly life changing and helped me see that I could be a part of changing the world for the better, and opening up the eyes of others who genuinely wanted to do better and do something. Finally, the pandemic made all races disappear for a while and at least be different for a while after that, which allowed me to continue down my path of discovering what running really means to me when I'm not competing. So I guess yes, it has benefited my running and yes, I suppose the answer to the original question is a big "yes," when I said in fact it was a "no" at the beginning. If you have a question that you'd like answered, you can email kat@runningforreal.com and she'll pass it along to Tina! Thanks for listening!
