The Opposite of Depression is Expression with Alyssa Spungen
Dreams bridge the ordinary and the mystical world. Working with them can be alchemical. Today we welcome special guest poet, dream priestess, and counselor-in-training Alyssa Spungen. Alyssa starts by describing a lucid dream that opened to her the mystery of dreaming in which she was ritually presented with red and black squares. She talks about how difficult it is to express dreams in words and says that’s why she started expressing them in poetry. She talks about the alchemy of dreams and how they hep us recognize our inner mystic. She then talks about how writing poetry helped her get through her depression and after the break shares with us a poem about the seductiveness of depression. We talk about Natural Dreamwork, Embodied Experiential Dreamwork, and synchronicity and take a call from Elizabeth from Bellingham who shares a dream-inspired poem about her own growth and insight.
BIO: Alyssa Spungen is a writer, a dreamer, and a counselor-in-training. She was born and raised in Lake County, Indiana and currently calls the Sonoran Desert home. Her first book of poetry will be published in May by the Phoenix esoteric publishing house White Stag Press. It’s called Spiral Staircase: A Meditation on Alchemy.

Dreams as the Workshop of Evolution with co-Dreaming Founders Kyle Napierkowski and Emily Cook, PhD
People’s dreams change before their behavior does. Our guests, Codreaming founders Emily Cook and Kyle Napierkowski share evidence from their research including how large databases show that dreams about Donald Trump shifted long before his favorability ratings did. They also talk about how dreams reveal that the concerns of people in their 20s and 30s are foundationally different from older people and the evidence that this is not merely because of their age, but because of generationally changing priorities.
After the break, we take a call from Lee from New York who talks about his 50 years of dream records, and we get into a conversation about demographics and the ethics of dream collection.
BIOS: As an Organizational Psychologist, Emily Cook pioneers integrating psychological science and dream analysis into business strategy. Her research is published in leading academic journals, and her work has been featured in The Independent, Financial Times, and Fox News. Kyle Napierkowski is a leader in ad-tech, AI, and data science, and has created data-driven impact for startups like PagerDuty and for large enterprises like Coca Cola and American Express. He develops methodologies for using dream data to harness creativity and identify consumer trends. He holds degrees in Management and certifications in psychological and coaching modalities.

Death is Not a Failure with Jenna Farr Ludwig
Dreams and death: Do dreams show us what it’ll be like to be dead? Our guest this week is Jenna Farr Ludwig. Jenna starts by describing two death dreams from childhood in one of which she dreamed of her mom falling off a cliff shortly before her mom died in a waking-life car wreck. We talk about pre-diagnosis dreams, dreams before death, visitation dreams, and about how to distinguish death dreams that are related to physical death vs death dreams that signal transformation and growth. We also talk about what dreams may have to say about what it will be like to be dead.
After the break we hear from four listeners. First Lenore from Oakland gives examples of some dreams that have made her less frightened of dying. Then David Jenkins (episode link is below) from Berkeley talks about sequences of visitation dreams and about how they can evolve. Rick Kleffel, DJ radio engineer and music creator, comments that dreams may be a foretaste of death in that they are experiences we have in which the physical body plays little or no role. Third, Dylan calls from Florida to share some of his profound reincarnation dreams. Finally, Ray from Santa Cruz calls to ask about how to talk to loved ones who have passed away.
Authors we talked about included Christopher Kerr, Robert Monroe, Edward Cayce, Carl Jung (Memories, Dreams, and Reflections), and Marie Louise von Franz.
BIO: Jenna Farr Ludwig is a certified dream guide and spiritual mentor with a Master’s of Arts in Transpersonal Studies and over 40 years of experience. Jenna has published poetry and articles in numerous periodicals and is in the process of writing a book about dreams and synchronicities.

Dream Journaling for the Long Haul with Laura Hilemen
What big-picture stuff do we miss out on as we work on our dreams one by one? Today’s guest, Laura Hileman, talks about long term dream journaling and how we can use our dream journals to help us review the passing seasons of our lives. She share examples of how she recognized from her dreams that she had cancer long before the doctors diagnosed it. She encourages us to ask our dreams what they are longing for and says she finds it helpful to think of her day and night lives as being all one thing, like the “two” sides of a möbius strip. She then shares some ideas about dreams and spirituality and encourages us to ask what the third grader would say when we find ourselves getting too complicated in our dream analysis.
After the break we take a call from Henny from Ontario CA who has a question about active imagination. Laura suggests that we look at Bob Hoss’s Six Magic Questions. We then take a call from Michelle from TN who asks what we are to make of all the weird composite figures that our dreams send us. We end with Laura giving more specific advice about how to record your dreams with an eye toward long term journaling.
BIO: Laura has been a dreamworker and spiritual director for 25 years. Trained at the Haden Institute, she’s mentored there and at Wisdom Tree Collective, where her dream course launches in September. Through her practice Fire by Night Dreamwork, Laura offers online dream groups, private sessions, and workshops on dream integration and spiritual practice.

The Woman between the Worlds: Dr Apela Colorado
“Dreams are a doorway to the vast, inclusive world of unconscious images and connections.” So says today’s guest, Dr. Apela Colorado of the Worldwide Indigenous Science Network. Truly a “Woman between the Worlds”, Dr. Colorado promotes an understanding between indigenous and modern world perspectives.
Dr. Colorado starts by setting a ceremonial space using cedar and sacred music and offering an invocation. She describes the way she discovered the Circle of Listening she developed after a chance side trip to the Chartres Cathedral in France. This involves drawing the dreams that are shared, a process called glyphing which is often done by Katrina Arriola who also joined us for the show. Dr. Colorado speaks about how she learned to incorporate multiple ancestral lineages and encourages us to say “a dream came to me” rather than “I had a dream.” Katrina speaks about the importance of the communal experience in dream-sharing.
After the break, we two calls. The first is from Ryan from Philadelphia who had attended one of the Chartres Dreamwork Events and describes how several of the participants had strikingly parallel dreams… all about him! The second call comes from Ellen of Santa Cruz who shares a dream featuring a monkey-like spirit and an old friend from Japan.
BIO: Apela Colorado Ph.D., of Oneida-Gaul ancestry, has dedicated her life’s work to bridge Western thought and indigenous worldviews. In 1989, she founded the Worldwide Indigenous Science Network which aims to (1) foster the revitalization, growth, and worldwide exchange of traditional knowledge, (2) safeguard the lives and work of the world’s endangered indigenous culture practitioners, and (3) develop an interface with Western science. She has authored numerous scholarly articles on Indigenous Science and recently published, “Woman Between the Worlds: A Call to Your Ancestral and Indigenous Wisdom”

Different ways of Exploring Dreams with Six Dream Experts and Three Callers
As we approach the 300th episode of the Dream Journal, I invite five dream experts to talk about their various approaches to dreamwork. All six will be presenters at the all-day in person IASD regional conference on March 1, 2025 in Whittier, California.
Guests are conference host Geoff Nelson who talks about the spirituality of dreaming, Lauren Schneider (dreamsandtarotpy.com) who describes her collective approach and her process of using tarot cards which she calls Tarotpy, Kelly Sullivan Walden (dreamifesting.com) who speaks about her experience of being evacuated during the recent LA fires and also about her process of incubating dreams for maximal waking-life manifestation, Marilyn Manzi (dreamsomatix.com) who focuses on dreaming as medicine and also finding pleasure in them, Walter Berry (drawnintothedream.com) who describes the value of drawing dream moments, and finally host, Katherine Bell, (ExperientialDreamwork.com) who describes her treasure hunt approach to dream exploration and drops hints about her in-progress book.
After the break we take two calls. The first is from Emily and Kyle in El Sobrante. Kyle shares a dream about someone having an interview, and we take turns offering “If it were my dream…” insights from our various perspectives. Emily and Kyle also describe their work on using a massive dataset of dreams to predict public opinion which can be found at codreaming.org. We take a second call from Emily from Soquel who describes a dream about the joy of feeling healed from a waking life knee injury.

Radical Resistance with Victor Lee Lewis
Founder of the Radical Resistance Institute, our guest today is Victor Lee Lewis. He brings a unique, socially progressive vision to the work of personal growth, personal empowerment, and emotional health. An early advocate of Jeremey Taylor, he is also profoundly influenced by his dreams. Victor starts by telling how a dream he had in the early 1980s woke him up to the need to radically remake his life. He sees dreams as a realm of oneness and says that dream groups are an ideal forum for bringing people together. We talk about about the idea of imaginal cells and also about how neuro-divergent people have the kind of “out of the box” thinking that we are in need of right now.
After the break, we take call from Jenny from Santa Cruz in which she shares a dream that a friend sent her which highlights spiritual vs political action. Max asks Victor what to say to young people who are neuro divergent. We also take a call from Ray from Santa Cruz who has some further reflections on Jenny’s dream. Victor ends by talking about his passion for human liberation.
