Think Globally, Act Locally with Sustainable Development Goals
Send us Fan MailYou don’t need one more acronym, right? We hear you. The nonprofit sector is riddled with abbreviations of ways to do more good. LOI, DAF, and even NPO. That said, there is one more acronym that we should all be aware of: SDG, or, better known as Sustainable Development Goals. These seventeen goals are agreed upon by the United Nations as initiatives to complete by the year 2030, and much of the world is on board. They address everything from poverty to gender equality and have the potential to change the world…as do you. In this episode, I talk to Kim Fuller of Phil. Kim’s agency specializes in helping charities gain support, traction, and impact while pursuing alignment with the SDGs. Remote Governance: The Boardroom v. Zoom
Send us Fan MailIn March of 2020, many boards were faced with no choice but to continue to govern in a remote fashion. Federal and state gathering restrictions made the shift mandatory, but nearly two years later, many boards are opting to continue to meet remotely. In this episode, Katie talks to Krista Martin, the VP of Growth at Boardable about their recent research into how boards are operating (and thriving) remotely. Nonprofit Annual Reports: Show, Don't Tell!
Send us Fan MailBack in the day, a nonprofit annual report was a full-team effort comprised of selecting the perfect stock images, stories, paper, and binding. ED's and advancement professionals balanced the decision of developing an impressive report with not looking like they spent too much. The end result was a 20+page volume that only the unlucky staff member assigned to editing actually read. Thank goodness, things have changed! Josh Kligman of Yearly shares with us his expertise on bringing nonprofit annual reports to life with technology and trade secrets. Donors Seek Transformational Giving
Send us Fan MailJust think...on average, 88% of an organization’s major donors are not giving at their full capacity. Therefore, how could it impact your organization if 88% of your major donors gave more? That's just one of the stats that Katie discusses with Bob Westfall of Westfall Gold in this episode. Bob shares findings from the 2021 Major Donor Generosity Report which elaborates on how nonprofits can turn transactional giving into transformational generosity. Wonder what that means? Think of it in terms of this question, for example:If I give your organization support, what change will it create in a community or individual’s life? That is the question fundraisers need to ask themselves and their leadership! The days of $x.xx buys xxx meals are over. It’s now time to talk about how we transform lives while creating impact that fosters lasting change. Bob narrates this point with stories from his own fundraising career. In addition, he shares tips on how wealth research and peer events can help prepare fundraisers to elevate their support and donor engagement. Why Golf Outings are the Go-To Nonprofit Fundraiser
Send us Fan MailIt’s no secret that fundraising evolved in the past year. In 2021, few in-person events could be done safely or even legally in the nonprofit space. Social distancing mandates and gathering restrictions took a toll on fundraisers across the board. That is, except for one: golf outings. In fact, golf outings saw a 7.4% increase in 2021 according to the National Golf Foundation. These classic fundraisers proved to be a pandemic-friendly option, encouraging people to get outside. Executive directors who never raised a club before found themselves greeting donors out on the green. And even more will do the same this coming year. About Logan Foote:Logan Foote is the Education and Development Manager at GolfStatus.org. Since 2017, Logan has worked with all types of nonprofit organizations to automate and streamline the management of their golf events and maximize fundraising outcomes. Logan has been playing golf since he was four years old. He has a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and resides in Lincoln, Nebraska with his wife and two sons.Support the showGet free nonprofit professional development resources, connections to cause work peers, and more at https://nonprofithub.org

Scrappy Nonprofit Accounting: Why DIY Doesn't Work
Send us Fan MailThe nonprofit sector is notoriously self-sufficient—and often a little scrappy—when it comes to nonprofit accounting. With the aid of Google and volunteers plus an unabashed passion for our cause, we attempt to do all sorts of things we probably shouldn’t. We do it to save money, but we also do it to prove we can (at least, I do...sometimes). While our intentions are good, our capacity and lack of expertise often catch up with us. About Germeen:Germeen Y. Guillaume (pronounced GEE-YOME) is the CEO and Founder of Visionary Accounting Group. She’s an entrepreneur at heart with a passion for numbers. She enjoys helping nonprofit organizations navigate the complex world of accounting in order to experience growth. Germeen’s experience in the accounting field spans over 10 years and was the catalyst for creating her own firm. She founded Visionary Accounting Group in 2015 and has been helping nonprofits leverage technology as a means to gain deeper financial insight and real time data. To date, Germeen has led the Company in recouping over $2.8M in receivables, through workflow automation and accounting system conversions. She’s aided clients through external and agency audits, integrating tech solutions, strategic management reporting, and preparation for funding/financing. Germeen is an avid traveler, loves reading, and is passionate about educating others on financial literacy. On any given day, you can find her discussing important money matters and awaiting her next traveling adventure.Support the showGet free nonprofit professional development resources, connections to cause work peers, and more at https://nonprofithub.org
