Lives of Sahaba 59 - Ubay Ibn Ka'b
In this amazing talk by Shaykh yasir Qadhi, we revel in the magnanimous stature and life of the great Sahaba being discussed - Ubay Ibn Ka’b RA, the greatest Qaari of the Qur’an after the Prophet ﷺ or Kitab Ul Wahi.
He is adorned with the blessed nickname of Abu Mundhir and he was one amongst the four blessed men who had to their credit the memorisation of the Quran. He had dedicated his life to the teaching of Qur'an after the death of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in the Prophet’s mosque in Madina. He used to complete recitation of the entire Qur'an every 8 days. The greatest Mufassir, Ibn Abbas was a student of Ubay ibn Ka’b RA.
Ibn Umar said that the Prophet ﷺ said, “Take the Qirat from four: Ibn Mas’oud, and from Ubay, and from Muadh, and from Saalim the slave of Abu Hudhayfah.”
Various Hadiths have been narrated with reference to and by Ubay Ibn Ka’b RA and deserve a worthy mention:
Anas RA said, "The Prophet ﷺ said to Ubay bin Ka’b, ‘Indeed Allah has commanded me to recite the Qur'an to you.’ This shows that Allah had chosen Ubay RA to be recited the Qur'an to which was nothing short of a magnanimous honour.
Umar ibn al-khattab RA said, “Whoever wishes to ask about the Qur’an then let him approach Ubay bin Ka’b, and whoever wants to ask about laws of inheritance then let him approach Zayd, and whoever wishes to ask about Fiqh; then let him approach Mu'adh Ibn Jabl, and whoever wants to ask about wealth; then let him come to me, for Allah has made me a safe-keeper and a distributor.” This further reinstates the obvious that Ubay Ibn Ka’b was indeed the greatest when it came to anything pertaining to the Qur'an and he was amongst the greatest scholars of Islam.
Al Waqidi said, ‘He was the first one to write for the Prophet ﷺ.’ This refers to the fact that ubay RA was among the firsts who scribed the revelations that came to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Masruq said, ‘I asked Ubay regarding some matter, so he said to me,‘O son of my brother, has this (i.e. your question) occurred?’ So I said: 'No.’ Thus he said, ‘Then let's leave it until if it happens, then we can do Ijtihaad and apply our opinion.’
Ubayy ibn Ka’b reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “O Abu Mundhir, do you know the greatest verse in the book of Allah?” I said, “Allah and His Messenger know best.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “O Abu Mundhir, do you know the greatest verse in the book of Allah?” I recited the verse of the throne (ayat al-kursi), “Allah, there is no God but Him, the Living, the Sustainer.” (2:255).
Ubay RA related that the Prophet ﷺ once asked him: “Shall I not teach you a Surah the like of which has not been revealed in the Tawrat, nor in the Injil, nor in the Zabur, nor in the Qur’an?” “I hope you would not leave through that door until you know what it is,” said the Prophet ﷺ, obviously prolonging the suspense for Ubay RA. Ubay then says: “He stood up and I stood up with him.I tried to delay him fearing that he would leave before letting me know what the Surah is. When he reached the door, I asked:‘O Messenger of Allah! The Surah which you promised to tell me…’ The Prophet ﷺ then replied:‘What do you recite when you stand for Salat?’ So, I recited for him Surah Fatihah and he said:‘(That’s) it! (That’s) it! They are the seven oft-repeated verses of which Allah Almighty has said: “We have given you the seven oft-repeated verses and the Mighty Qur’an.'”
There are a few Hadiths that have been quoted by Shaykh Yasir regarding the Witr prayer during Salt Isha and also about the Laylatul Qadr in Ramadan.
May Allah SWT grant him Jannah and raise us amongst the ranks of Ubay Ibn Ka’b RA.

Lives Of The Sahaba 57 - Sa'd Ibn Mu'ad And Sa'd Ibn 'Ubadah
This enlightening video takes us into the lives of two great Sahabas - Sa’d Ibn Mu’ad and Sa’s Ibn Ubadah RA. Shaykh Yasir attempts to give us explicit details on the greatness of these two Sahabas and we should rightly listen intently.
Sa'd Ibn Muadh was a name to beckon with amongst the Ansar and he belonged to the tribe of Aws.Ibn Muadh accepted Islam at the hands of Musab ibn Umair which led to the entire clan of Aws or the Banu Abdul-Ashhal following suit.
When the tribe of Aws saw Sa’d Ibn Muadh returning after the conversion, they witnessed something different in his demeanour and hence said: "We swear by Allah, Sa'd has returned with a different impression." They replied "You are our Chief, the most vested in our interests, the best in your judgement, and the most fortunate in leadership." He then said: "I will not speak to a man or a woman among you until you believe in Allah and his Messenger."
During the battle of Badr, Sa’d RA was consulted with regards to the matter of the second treaty of Aqabah to seek a solution on Abu Sufyan. Some people( Bani bin Quraiza) agreed to the verdict of Sa’d bin Muadh over that of the Prophet ﷺ and so it was decided to approach Sa'd bin Mu'adh for the same. He approached the Mosque and the Prophet ﷺ said, "O Sa'd! These people have agreed to accept your verdict." Sa'd said, "I judge that their warriors be killed and their children and women be taken captives." The Prophet ﷺ said, "You have given a judgment similar to Allah's Judgment ."
In a separate Hadith, the Prophet ﷺ has mentioned that , "The Throne (of Allah) shook at the death of Saad bin Muadh."
In another Hadith, the messenger of Allah ﷺ has said: “Were anybody to be saved from the squeezing of the grave, it would have been Sa’d.”
Sa'd Ibn ubadah was synonymous with the Khazraj tribe and was amongst the most prominent of Muhammad ﷺ companions.
After the death of the Prophet ﷺ, chieftains of the Ansar gathered in a place called Saqifa to appoint Sa'd Ibn Ubadah as their next Khalifa but this was met with opposition and the other people pledged their allegiance to Abu Bakr RA and Umar RA and hence, a tiff of sorts arose between the people in question over personal issues. This brought about the result of Sa'd Ibn Ubadah never being part of any of these caliph’s group nor participating in any battles or political matters. After some years during Umar's RA caliphate, he was sternly asked to bear allegiance or leave the city of Madina and this is exactly what made him leave the city as well.
Around 7 Hadiths have been narrated by Sa’d Ibn Ubadah in his lifetime. There is a Hadith that is which Sa’d ibn Ubadah reported: He said, “O Messenger of Allah, the mother of Sa’d has died, so what is the best charity I may give on her behalf?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Water.” Sa’d dug a well and he said, “This is for the mother of Sa’d.”
His death was a subject of utter bizarreness wherein it was reported that he had been assassinated by the jinns when he was bathing by the striking of two spears that struck his heart.. The reason for this was even more ambiguous which was that he was urinating whilst standing. It is also said that his skin turned a hue of green. These stories are very weak and there are many broken chains of Hadith to substantiate it. So Allah knows best.
This great Sahaba left for his heavenly abode in the 14th year of Hijrah.

Lives Of The Sahaba 56 - Anas Ibn Malik
Anas Ibn Malik RA is next in the topic of discussion by Shaykh Yasir Qadhi where we extract details and important elucidations on the life and times of this great Sahaba. He has narrated over 2000 hadiths and is aptly considered to be the third most magnanimous narrator of Hadith after Abu Hurayrah RA and Ibn Umar RA.
Anas RA was an Ansari belonging to the Khazraj tribe and was born 10 years before the Hijrah. His mother was the famous and prolific Umm Sulaym RA and his step father was the great Abu Talha RA. Explicit details and numerous facts and anecdotes are shared relating to this great man and deserve a commendable section of thought. Amongst them, some have been listed below:
Abu Talha Ra was blessed with enormous amounts of wealth and he valued his garden named Beruha the most which was attached close to the mosque of the Prophet ﷺ. Allah’s Divine revelation: 'you will not attain righteousness till you spend in charity of the things you love' (3.93), brought Abu Talha in front of Muhammad ﷺ and said, "O Allah's Messenger ﷺ! Allah says in His Book, 'You will not attain righteousness unless you spend (in charity) that which you love,' and verily, the most beloved to me of my property is Beeruha, so I give it in charity and hope for its reward from Allah. O Allah's Messenger ﷺ! Spend it wherever you like." Allah's Messenger ﷺ appreciated this endowment .
Abu Talha and Umm Sulaym had a child of their own who was named Abu Umair RA. This child did not attain longevity of live and died at the tender age of approximately 5.
It is narrated in al-Bukhari that the brother of Anas ibn Malik RA called Abu Umayr had a bird who was called al-nughayr. The bird died suddenly and he mourned its loss heavily which brought the Prophet ﷺ to him and trying to lift his spirits asked him, “O Abu ‘Umayr, what happened to al-nughayr?”
This hadith highlights the nobility, humility nad great character of the Prophet ﷺ.
Anas ibn Malik once said: The Prophet ﷺ used to enter Umm Sulaym RA house and sleep on her mattress and one day her sister Umm Haram said to her, “The Prophet ﷺ is sleeping in your house on your bed.” She came and saw that his sweat had soaked a piece of cloth that was on the mattress. So she started collecting that sweat and squeezing it into bottles. The Prophet ﷺ woke up startled and said, “What are you doing, O Umm Sulaym?” She said, “O Messenger of Allah, we hope for the Barakah (blessing) of this sweat for our children.” He said, “You are right.”
The Prophet ﷺ had made Dua for Anas Ibn Malik RA in his lifetime which bore fruit till and after his last breath "Allahumma Urzuqu Maalan Wa Waladan Wa Barik Lahu” (O Allah, give him a wealth and offspring and bless his life)."
At the end of his life, Anas Ibn Malik became blind . He died in Basra in 93H at the age of 103 years.

Lives Of The Sahaba 55 - Jabir Ibn Abdullah
The life of Jabir ibn Abdullah ibn Amr ibn Haram Al-Ansari RA is touched upon by Shaykh Yasir Qadhi in this video and various anecdotes, Hadith and magnanimous personality traits of this great Sahaba are divulged in explicit details.
Jabir RA participated in as many as 19 Ghazwa alongside Prophet Muhammad ﷺ but was forbidden by his father to participate in the battle of Badr and Uhud. Both he and his father had signed the treaty of Aqabah. He lived a full and accomplished life though he went blind in his old age.
Many Hadith are attributed from Jabir Ibn Abdullah RA. some worth a mention are as follows:
“I was accompanying the Prophet ﷺ on a journey and was riding a slow camel. The Prophet ﷺ passed by me and asked, "Who is this?" I replied, "Jabir bin Abdullah." He asked, "What is the matter, (why are you late)?" I replied, "I am riding a slow camel." He asked, "Do you have a stick?" I replied in the affirmative. He said, "Give it to me." When I gave it to him, he touched the camel with it and then that camel surpassed the others thenceforth. The Prophet (SAW) said, "Sell it to me." I replied, "It is (a gift) for you, O Allah's Messenger ﷺ." He said, "Sell it to me. I have bought it for four Dinars (gold pieces) and you can keep on riding it till Medina." When we approached Medina, I started going (towards my house). The Prophet ﷺ said, "Where are you going?" I said, "I have married a widow." He said, "Why have you not married a younger lady?" I said, "My father died and left daughters, so I decided to marry a widow (an experienced woman) (to look after them." He said, "Well done." When we reached Medina, Allah's Messenger ﷺ said, "O Bilal, pay him the price of the camel and give him extra money." Bilal gave me four Dinars and one Qirat extra. “
“Once I was in debt (in all probability it was that of his father) and the one who had lent the money came and demanded his money back. I replied to him that there was no produce this year in the wake of a disease (or something to that effect). But the lender would not budge until i had paid him back his money. Left with no choice, I went to the Prophet ﷺ and told him all about it. He requested him to come next year and he would have his loan repaid but to no avail. Then, the Prophet ﷺ asked me to take him to my garden and after wandering there he made Dua and took a short nap. He had invoked Allah to bless my garden with a good produce of dates and lo and behold -that is what exactly happened. I then plucked the dates and paid the debt off.”
May Allah SWT raise us in the ranks of the company of Jabir Ibn Abdullah RA.

Lives Of The Sahaba 54 - Zayd's Family
In this talk by Shaykh Yasir Qadhi, we are acquainted with the key members of Zayd Ibn HArithah RA family - Umm Ayman or Barakah and Usama Ibn Zayd RA.
Umm Ayman was a mother figure to the Prophet ﷺ and was the former slave girl of Abdul Muttalib RA. She always took good care of the Prophet ﷺ and later went on to play key roles in the Battle of Uhud and Khaybar.
When Muhammad married Khadija RA, he made an alliance of marriage between Barakah and Ubayd ibn Zaid which resulted in the birth of a son named Ayman, and that was how she gained the nickname -"Umm Ayman". Her husband was killed in the Battle of Khaybar. When she attained middle age,the Prophet ﷺ, when speaking to his companions said, "Should one of you desire to marry a woman from the people of Paradise, let him marry Umm Ayman." This resulted in the marriage between the most beloved companion of the Prophet ﷺ, Zayd ibn Harithah RA marrying her and she bore a son named Usama who went on to be a great person in the way of Islam.
She died during the caliphate of Uthman Ibn Affan RA.
Usama Ibn Zayd was born in Mecca 7 years before the Hijra and acquired himself the nickname of Hibbu Rasulullah ﷺ. He bore striking resemblance to his mother in terms of complexion and looks. He married 2 or 4 women in his lifetime and led many expeditions, details of which can be avidly listened to and gained knowledge from in this video.
Many hadith have been narrated by Usama Ibn Zayd RA and deserve an intent listen just to be enriched by the great anecdotes and stories that transpired in that era.

Lives Of The Sahaba 53 - Zayd Ibn Haritha
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi sets out on a journey to divulge details on the most blessed, beloved and prominent member of the Seerah of the Prophet ﷺ. He is the only Sahabi to be mentioned by name in the Qur'an and he is - Zayd Ibn Harithah RA.
Zayd ibn harithah was short and dark skinned and had a flat nose. He was separated from his family at a young age and sold as a slave in the markets of Ukaadh. But the Divine Qadr of Allah had ordained something else as this man’s future. Zayd RA was purchased from the market by a man named Hakim ibn Huzam who happened to be the nephew of Khadija RA.
When Khadija RA got married to the Prophet ﷺ, she gifted Prophet Muhammad ﷺ this boy as a slave. From that day onwards, Zayd RA was pretty much family to the Prophet ﷺ and was treated likewise.
Zayd (R) was married five times in his lifetime, most important amongst whom was Umm Ayman.
Zayd’s father Harithah was searching for his son frantically ever since his disappearance and through another man, he became aware of his son’s whereabouts in Mecca. He set out to meet his son and landed at the doorsteps of the Prophet SAW to take back his osn Zayd RA. Muhammad ﷺ left the matter to the jurisdiction of Zayd and gave him free will to choose his path. But Zayd decided to stay alongside the Prophet ﷺ saying that he wouldn't leave his side for anything this world has to offer.
This prompted the Prophet ﷺ to take Zayd as his adopted son and named him - Zayd ibn Muhammad.he accepted Islam and when time seemed apt, he was married off to the Prophet ﷺ cousin Zainab bint Jahsh. This marriage resulted in failure and met an end in the form of a divorce. The Prophet ﷺ then married Zainab after a divine revelation. This was met with severe criticism on the rules and regulations pertaining to adopted sons.
Then, Allah sent down a verse in Surah Ahzab that settled matters finally.
‘…Nor has He made your adopted sons your real sons. That is but your saying with your mouths. But Allah says the truth, and He guides to the (Right) Way.Call them (adopted sons) by (the names of) their fathers, that is more just with Allah. (Al-Ahzab 33:4-5).’
"Mohammed is not a father of any man among you, but he is the Messenger of Allah and the last of the Prophets” (Al Ahzab 33:90).
It was after this revelation that Zayd Ibn Muhammad was reverted to his name with his original roots - Zayd Ibn Harithah.
“And [remember, O Muhammad], when you said to the one on whom Allah bestowed favor and you bestowed favor, "Keep your wife and fear Allah," while you concealed within yourself that which Allah is to disclose. And you feared the people, while Allah has more right that you fear Him. So when Zayd had no longer any need for her, We married her to you in order that there not be upon the believers any discomfort concerning the wives of their adopted sons when they no longer have need of them. And ever is the command of Allah accomplished.”
He was always sent on expeditions only as a military commander and nothing less. He died a martyr in the Battle of Mutah where other brave hearts also were martyrs - Ja'far ibn Abi Talib and Abd Allah ibn Rawahah.on his death, Muhammed SAW wept till he was sobbing alongside Zayd RA daughter when he was questioned by Saad ibn Ubadah on his behaviour to which the Prophet ﷺ replied -'This is the yearning of the lover for the beloved.’
Many Hadith have been told since time about Zayd Ibn Harithah and by him through narrations from his son, Usama Ibn Zayd RA.
Please do listen intently to be mesmerised and acquaint yourselves with the greatness of this Habib of the Prophet ﷺ.

Lives Of The Sahaba 52 - Abdullah Ibn-Umar
Shaykh Yasir Qadhi commences this video delving into the life and times of another great Sahaba,Abdullah Ibn Umar RA, the son of the second Caliph of Islam, Umar Ibn Al Khattab RA and Zaynab Bint Madhun.
The most striking feature and noble trait that merited Ibn Umar RA was his generosity, asceticism and piety all encompassed into a magnanimous example of neutrality and unbiasedness. He could always face people with the absolute truth even when he was getting opposed in the wake of oppression with an unwavering attitude. His behaviour towards the Hujjaj is an example enough to prove this aspect of Ibn Umar RA.
He was a man who considered wealth only a means to satisfy the bare necessities of life and never indulged in exuberance, extravagance and simplicity the estimated value of all his belongings stood at no more than a hundred dirhams, which showed that anything beyond a meagre value was instantly given away as charity.
An interesting illustration of his simplicity is elucidated in the following incident. One of his acquaintances from Khurasan once brought him a fine and elegant thawb:"I have brought this thawb for you from Khurasan," he said. "It would certainly bring coolness to your eyes. I suggest that you take off these coarse clothes you have and put on this beautiful thawb.""Show it to me then," said Abdullah and on touching it he asked: "Is it silk?" "No, it is cotton," replied his friend. For a little while, Abdullah Ibn Umar RA was pleased. Then he pushed away the thawb and said: "No! I am afraid for myself. I fear that it shall make arrogant and boastful. And God does not love the arrogant boaster."
Abdullah Ibn Umar RA participated in every battle starting from the Battle of Khandaq. Abdullah bin Umar RA had the most prestigious and coveted position in the wake of Tafsir, Fiqh and the Hadith. He has narrated 2630 hadiths, thus, entailing his dominance as the narrator of the most Hadiths second only to Abu Hurayrah RA.
Abdullah Ibn Umar RA was once sleeping in the mosque when he dreamt that two angels took him to Hell and he began to say “I take refuge in Allah from Hell. I take refuge in Allah from Hell. I take refuge in Allah from Hell. Then an angel met us and told me not to be afraid. He then told them to leave me.” Hafsa RA, who was married to the Prophet SAW narrated one of his dreams to the Prophet SAW who told her: "Abdullah is a good man. I wish he prayed the night prayers." Post that conversation, Abdullah Ibn Umar RA hardly sleep and spend most of his lifetime in prayers and fasting.
Abdullah Ibn Umar left for his heavenly abode in 73 H at the age of 86 years.

Lives Of The Sahaba 51 - Abdullah Ibn Mas'ud
This video by Shaykh Yasir enamors us with a deep understanding on the life and times of greatest Sahaba, Abdullah Ibn Masud RA.
Abdullah Ibn Masud was one of the earliest converts to Islam, the most knowledgeable when it came to Quranic recitation and the founder of the earliest Madrasas - The Kufa Madrasa- which produced distinguished luminaries, chief amongst whom was Abu Hanifa (rahimahullah). He is attributed with short stature, thin body, very dark skin and having a sparse beard.
He as also the first to have recited the Holy Qur'an by reciting Surah Rahman publicly in front of the Kaaba which was a huge step in that time with the Quraysh revolting every move made in the way of Islam. He was penalised heavily by being beaten and bruised badly but that did not deter him the least and he vowed to recite the Qur'an in the same place the next day no matter what the result. Abdullah Ibn Abbas RA had the ultimate prestige of having ended the life of Abu Jahl in the battle of Badr.
The first meeting with the Prophet ﷺ was an interesting one and he quotes: I was a young shepherd boy responsible for the sheep of Uqbah lbn Abu Mu’ait. The Prophet ﷺ once came with Abu Bakr and said, ‘O boy, do you have milk for us to drink?’ and I said, ‘I can’t let you drink their milk.’ The Prophet ﷺ said, ‘Do you have a virgin sheep that has never mated with a male?’ I said, ‘Yes’ and brought it to them. The Prophet ﷺ caught it and stroked its udder and prayed to Allah till the udder filled. Abu Bakr brought him a concave rock into which he milked the sheep. Abu Bakr drank the milk, and then after that the Prophet said to the udder, ‘Shrink,’ and it did. I went to the Prophet after this incident and said to him, ‘Teach me this kind of talk.’ The Prophet ﷺ said, ‘You are already a learned boy.’
Eventually, thus, it came as no surprise when he was so mesmerized with the Prophet ﷺ that he earned himself the trust and companionship of the Messenger of Allah SAW in every walk of life, for instance, he would accompany him in all his journeys and expeditions,Waking the Prophet ﷺ, carrying the Prophet's staff, siwak, slippers, bedroll, and water for purification amongst many other chores. It is said that he bore marked resemblance to the Prophet ﷺ in his traits and character. Thus, he was awarded with the nicknames of Saheb-e-Siwak (bearer of the siwak), Saheb-e-Nalain (bearer of the slippers), Saheb-e-Mutahara (bearer of the water) and also Saheb-e-Wisadah (bearer of the bedroll).
There are many Hadith which were narrated with Abdullah Ibn Masud as reference. The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Learn the Qur'an from four people, Abdullah Ibn Masood RA, Salim Maula Abi Huzaifah RA, Ubayy Ibn Kaab RA and Muaz Ibn Jabal RA.' The Prophet has also said, 'Read the Qur'an in the same manner as Abdullah Ibn Masood teaches.'
Umar RA once said: 'One night the Messenger of Allah was having a conversation with Abu Bakr RA about the situation of Muslims. I was with them. When the Prophet ﷺ left, we left with him also and as we passed through the mosque, there was a man standing in Prayer whom we did not recognize. The Prophet stood and listened to him, then turned to us and said,"Whoever wants to read the Qur'an as fresh as when it was revealed, then let him read according to the recitation of Ibn Umm Abd." After the Prayer, as Abdullah Ibn Masood رضى الله تعالى عنه sat making supplications, the Prophet said, "Ask and it will be given to you. Ask and it will be given to you."this showed us that Abdullah Ibn Masud was the epitome of perfection in the Qirat Al Qur'an.
For more such amazing anecdotes and stories, do listen to the video intently and be enlightened.

The Rise Of The Far Right
It is reported in the Sahih of Imam Muslim that one day our Prophet Muhammad(S) was once sitting on one of the houses of Medinah. He looked around and said to the Sahabas: Do you see what I'm seeing They said What oh Messenger of Allah The Prophet answered: I see trials and tribulations falling upon your houses like the drops of rain. The frequency, the quantity will affect everybody
In another Hadith, our Prophet(S) said that towards the end of time, trials would become repetitive by nature. Every time a trial/calamity would come, the believers would become scared and terrified. They will say that we cannot pass this trial. The Prophet(S) said Allah will open up the doors and let it go away. Then another will come, they will say "This is my destruction" and so on and so forth.
Nowadays when we look at how many incidents are taking place, how many issues that are rising day by day. We can see the difference of the how the world was before and what it has become now!
