Lives of Sahaba 69 - Adi ibn Hatim & Thumamah ibn Uthal

In this video by Shaykh Yasir Qadhi, we are acquainted at length about two other Sahabas - Adi Ibn Hatim RA and Thumamah Ibn Uthal RA. The father of Adi Ibn Hatim was the most generous of all people, a poet and the chieftain of his tribe. He held great authority and was respected greatly amongst his people.his daughter, Saffanah, once happened to be captured by the troops of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ when they came searching for Ibn Hatim RA. He had actually fled from his city and his whereabouts were not be heard of. Saffanah was a braveheart and confidently stood in front of the Prophet ﷺ and demanded her freedom. But she was reminded of her brother everytime she made an appeal. Finally, when she was set free, she went in search of her brother Ibn Hatim. Having finally found him, he was rebuked incessantly for his cowardly behaviour . A wish for a meeting with the Prophet ﷺ lands him at the doorsteps of the messenger of Allah SAW and Adi RA narrates, “I came to the house of the Prophet ﷺ and he said,: “O Adi, accept Islam and you will be safe!” to which I replied, “I already have a religion.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “I know more about religion than you do.” I said, “You know more about my religion than I do?” The Prophet said, “Yes, are not you from the Rukusiyyah? And when you go to war, do you not share one quarter of your people’s booties?” I said, “Yes.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “I know what is preventing you from accepting Islam. You think that the only people to follow this religion are the weak and oppressed who have no strength.he further continues,’ Perhaps, the only thing that prevents you from entering this religion is what you see of the small number of Muslims and their numerous enemies. By Allah, the time is near when you would hear of the woman setting out from Qadisiyyah on her camel until she reaches this house, not fearing anyone except Allah. The Prophet ﷺ then quoted his third reason,’Perhaps what prevents you from entering this religion is that you only see that sovereignty and power rest in the hands of those who are not Muslims. By Allah, you will soon hear of treasures which we shall acquire.’ Do listen to the complete hadith to understand how his conversion to Islam took place. He fought alongside Ali ibn Abi Talib RA in the Battle of Camel and Battle of Siffin and died at the age of 102 in the year 67 H in Kufa where his grave remains to this day. Next in line for elucidation is Thumamah ibn Uthal RA who was not as famous as Ali Ibn Hatim RA but he was a handsome man who was very beloved to tribe of Yamamah which was his origin. When he was captured by the troops of the Prophet ﷺ, he said to his family, "Get what food you can and send it to Thumamah ibn Uthal." which was from whatever was reserved for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.The Prophet ﷺ then approached Thumamah RA hoping to encourage him to get converted to Islam. "What do you have to say for yourself?" he asked. "If you want to kill me as revenge," Thumamah replied, "You will have someone of royalty to kill. If, out of your kindness, you want to forgive, I will be grateful. If you want money in compensation, I shall give you whatever you ask." The Prophet ﷺ then repeated the same questions for three days only to receive the same answer. Then the Prophet ﷺ ordered his people to set Thumamah free. An interesting incident happened when Thumamah RA left the mosque of the Prophet ﷺ. He rode to a luscious garden near Madina and bathed himself and went back to the Prophet ﷺ house. He then stood before the Muslims and proclaimed Shahadah. He then went to the Prophet ﷺ and said: "O Muhammad, by God, there was never on this earth a face more despicable than yours. Now, yours is the dearest face of all to me." Thumamah RA then left to fulfill his Umrah and upon reaching Makkah, he began chanting in a resonant voice: "Labbayk Allahumma labbayk. Labbayk La shareeka Laka labbayk. Innal hamda wan ni'mata Laka wal mulk. Laa shareeka Lak. “ He was thus the first Muslim on the face of the earth to recite the Talbiyah. No hadith have been narrated by Thumamah RA.

Lives of Sahaba 68 - Hassan Ibn Thabbit

This video commences with an introduction by shaykh Yasir Qadhi on one of the greatest poets of Islam - Sayyid Ush Shu’araa Ul Mu’mineen - Hassan Ibn Thabit RA. He belonged to the Banu Najjar of the Khazraj tribe. He was from an elite household and was well versed in poetry since his childhood. He was the poet of the Prophet ﷺ meaning he always wrote poetry showering praise on him. He was also the one for whom Jibreel AS came to help with poetry in the rhythm of pre Islam. It is a bit demeaning to say, but nevertheless, Ibn Thabit RA never participated in any battle of Islam due to his cowardice.he was just not cut out to fight with enemies. There are mostly no Hadith narrated by Hassan Ibn Thabit RA but there are many Hadith in which he is mentioned. Some are as follows: Narrated Hassan bin Thabit Al-Ansari: I asked Abu Huraira, "By Allah! Tell me the truth whether you heard the Prophet ﷺ saying, 'O Hassan! Reply on behalf of Allah's Messenger. O Allah! Help him with the Holy Spirit." Abu Hurairah said, "Yes . " Aisha RA said: Once Hassan bin Thabit asked the permission of the Prophet ﷺ to compose poetry defaming the infidels. The Prophet ﷺ said, "What about the fact that I have common descent with them (referring to the Quraysh)?" Hassan RA replied, "I shall take you out of them as a hair is taken out of dough." Narrated 'Urwa: I started abusing Hassan in front of 'Aisha, but she said, "Don't abuse him, for he used to defend the Prophet ﷺ." He left for his heavenly abode in 50H and lived a long life of 110 years approximately. The life and incidents that transpired in the life of Hassan Ibn Thabit RA teach us many valuable lessons, primary among which is we should not abstain from doing whatever good we can even though we have committed sins or made huge mistakes. It is a very motivating lesson to emulate. May Allah SWT give Hidayah to one and all.

Can Your Wife Reject Sexual Intercourse In Islam

Shaykh Yasir Qadhi discusses one of the most sensitive areas of certain verses in the Hadith which have been misinterpreted regarding intimacy. The husbands can never attain marital bliss by becoming nasty and hurling hadiths at their wives. We should fathom the causes behind the marital discord and aim to resolve it by Muslim marital therapy. Just as husbands have rights, so do the women and marriage can never succeed if we are worried about our own rights. Ask yourself whether it is me who has issues or not? Kindness, love, mercy and gentleness beautifies everything more so with marriage. An explicit point for the brothers is that they have no right to be physical or force upon your wife and turn abusive if she rejects intimacy. If the woman refuses, it is between her and Allah SWT and without a valid excuse, she will be held accountable for it.

The Importance of Civic Duty from the Seerah

Shaykh Yasir Qadhi discusses an event that took place in the life of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ even before he was made a Nabi.  The story is about a merchant who came from the tribe of Zabeed from Yemen. He had merchandise with him to sell in the time of Hajj and wanted to sell this.He tries to sell it but fails due to the double standards and the hypocrisy of the Quraysh for stalling him.  This message spread across the town of Makkah until it reached Abdullah ibn Judan who convened the seniors of Quraysh and implored them to stop trampling the rights of innocents. In this gathering, there was a young man who had maturity and sensibility of leadership and he was none other than Muhammad ﷺ. It was declared that a treaty which had a foundation of equality and fairness would be signed upon.this treaty is called as Hilf Al Mutayyibeen or Hilf Ul Fudool. Why were these names given to this treaty? Do listen intently.

Lives of The Sahaba 67 - Abu Ayyub Al-Ansari

Abu Ayyub al-Ansari is next in the line of Sahabas up for discussion and elucidation by Shaykh Yasir Qadhi. Abu Ayyub Al Ansari RA was born Khalid bin Zayd ibn Kulayb and belonged to Banu Najjar from the Khazraj tribe. We also get acquainted with details on how the Prophet ﷺ was related to Banu Najjar. Al Ansari RA was given the ultimate honour by Allah SWT of hosting the Prophet ﷺ when he arrived in Madinah. When the Prophet ﷺ entered Madinah on his camel, he was lured incessantly by the people to honour them with the privilege of hosting Rasoolullah ﷺ saying, "Stay with us, O Rasulullah." "Leave the camel," the Prophet ﷺ would say. "It is under command (from Allah).” This continued until the camel landed at the doorsteps of Abu Ayyub RA only to move from there and go forward. But it was not long before the camel retreated its steps and stopped again at the house of Abu Ayyub RA. His happiness knew no bounds and this was shared by his wife too and they were the best hosts as shall be deciphered from the Shaykh’s lecture. He was one of the strongest defenders against the Munafiqun and this quality is illustrated numerous times even so in the presence of his own wife as is indicative in the following story: During the troubled time of accusations against Aisha RA of slander, Abu Ayyub al Ansari's wife came home and said to her husband "Have you heard?" Abu Ayyub RA was very angry and said, "We should not be saying these things. It's an evil lie". And Allah sent down Ayats with reference to this exact same incident though it transpired in the privacy of the house of Abu Ayyub RA - "Why didn't you say like this person said?” There are around a 100 Hadith that have been narrated by Abu Ayyub RA and deal with various issues. Abu Ayyub has his grave in Istanbul, Turkey.

Shaykh Al Islam Ibn Taymiyyah - An Introduction

Shaykh Yasir Qadhi discusses about one of the most famous scholars of the fourteen and a half centuries of Islam - Shaykh Al Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, a name that is synonymous with the studies of Islam. He was born in Damascus, during the invasion of the Mongols. Shaykh Al Islam Ibn Taymiyyah belonged to a family of scholars with both his father and grandfather being magnanimous Ulama. Consequently, his brothers too became eminent scholars of Islam. Scholarship, teaching and authorship was his forte and he had mastered it to perfection. He was also called a polymath for this very reason. Ibn Taymiyyah was blessed with excellent students such as Ibn Qayyim Al-Jawziyya and Ibn Kathir. This did not come as a surprise given the status of  Ibn Taymiyyah himself which was a stupendous one at that. Numerous publications and volumes have been released that have been authored by this great scholar. Some among them are: Al Asma was Sifaat (Allah's Names and Attributes) – Two volumes. Kitab al Iman (Book of the Tenets of Faith). Minhaj as-Sunnah an-Nabawiyyah (The way of the Prophet's Sunnah) – Four volumes.

7 Wisdoms Of Pain And Suffering

Sh. Dr. Yasir Qadhi discusses the 7 wisdoms of calamities, from the perspective of a Believer (Muslim). These are part of a larger list as authored by Al-Izz Ibn Abdus-Salam, a 13th century scholar of Islam. In part II of the khutbah, the people of Al-Ghouta (in Syria) are mentioned, their calamities, Islamic perspective and significance of this land as it is related to the end of times. Topics: Why is there pain, why is there suffering? What did Allah say to the angels when they asked such a question? How do we approach evil and suffering? If we don't have humility and faith, we may reject God due to arrogance. By rejecting God due to the existence of evil, you introduce an infinite long list of complex questions you have no answers for. Seven wisdoms of calamities and pain in this world: Demonstrates Lordship -  Only Allah is Powerful, no one else. Appreciation of the fact that we are the servants of Allah. The religiosity, Iman, Taqwa, Du'a and calling to Allah that comes as a result. Exhibition of the best Akhlaq in a person. Allah allows others to demonstrate generosity and test those who are blessed with the worldly benefits and pleasures. Appreciation of the blessings and ease in our daily life for which we ought to be thankful to Allah. Blessings of Allah on the Day of Judgment due to pain in this world. If you don't believe in day of judgment, you won't believe the wisdom of pain/evil in this world. Allah mentions in the Qur’an, “There are those people who worship Allah with a condition. If life is good, he’s happy and will happy with Allah. But if life is not good and a Fitnah happens, then he switches his faith in Allah, he ends up losing this world and the next.” [Surah al Baqarah]

Crisis Of Knowledge

Shaykh Yasir Qadhi discusses a very important topic of the hour which is an impending crisis in knowledge of Deen. The Shaykh quotes numerous instances to support his stance of how knowledge precedes every magnanimous quality that one may have. For example, the story of the mother who cursed her child on his failure to respond to her call on numerous occasions and how Allah accepted her Dua while causing no harm to the son too.many stories illustrate the blessings of having sound knowledge. Please do listen. A knowledgeable scholar is better than any act of worship. Knowledge takes superiority over worship too. For instance, through knowledge, the superiority of Adam AS was exhibited over angels as the angels were great in every way except that they had not been blessed by Allah with Ilm or knowledge. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ says  - "If Allah intends goodness for someone, He gives him understanding of the religion." [Sahih Bukhari] In the rest of the lecture, Shaykh Yasir Qadhi divulges important information on ways to gain Islamic knowledge. There are numerous institutes, centres and organisations that help in this regard and one should not make excuses to accommodate this quintessential factor in one’s life and should begin immediately so that he lives a life filled with the love for Islam.
