A career move from Actuary to Self employed IFA, Why Daniel chose Financial Planning as a career
As the advice gap widens and a high proportion of advisers are set to retire over the next 5- 10 years it's now commonly accepted that we need to increase efforts to attract talent from other professions. I personally find this very interesting, what transferable skills, attributes, and personalities are suited to financial planning? So, when I got the opportunity to interview Daniel Wiltshire a Chartered Fellow Actuary who made the move to Financial Planning, I jumped at the chance. Actuaries tend to be predominantly conventional individuals, they are usually detail-oriented and organised, and like working in a structured environment. They also tend to be investigative, which means that they are quite inquisitive and curious people. I would consider these transferable attributes to financial planning. Daniel is one of the few Financial Planners brave enough to move straight into self-employment, and today he shares why he chose this path.We cover:· His experience of a Financial Planning academy, the good and the bad. · First-year realities of self-employment, what you should prepare for. · The benefits of working with an external business consultant.· Why self-employment and IFA were the only options for him. · Spinning plates, what he does to stay focused ad productive. Michael Pashley discusses the brand new PIP Qualification, a game changer for all levels of financial planners
It's no secret that there is a growing adviser gap in the UK and we need new Financial Planners to join the profession and for firms to upskill the growing number of administrators and paraplanners that want to progress their careers into an adviser role. there is a growing misconception that by achieving level 4 qualifications you can walk straight into a financial planning role, sadly this just isn't true. although level 4 is a great indication of technical knowledge, many Financial Planning firms are still put off by the lack of practical experience that a trainee financial planner has, thus delaying the return on investment of any new hire or an internal promotion. Time and resources play a big part in this, there are a handful of larger financial planning firms that are teaching the practical skills through academies but the vast majority of firms are SME's, they lack the resources time, and money to take this approach. What's the solution? The brand new game-changing 'Practical investment Planning' an RQF Level 6/SCQF level 9 qualification created and trained by Michael Pashley from Practical Financial Exams Ltd. In this episode we cover:How this will make you more marketable as a candidate, securing more job offers! especially if you are transferring from another profession. Why every company needs to make this part of their PDP framework, your staff will love you for this! and you will be better positioned for the future fight for talent.a complete run-through of the qualification, what you will be doing, and the amazing coaching and training provided by Michael Pashley. How much it costs, how long it will take. How the evidence gathered during this qualification will help speed up the competent adviser status process. Michael Pashley FPFS is an experienced financial planning training consultant with a technical background in investment, pensions, and compliance. He is an award-winning Chartered Financial Planner and Fellow of the Personal Finance Society. connect with Michal on LinkedIn here Within Practical Financial Exams Limited, he is chiefly responsible for internal verification, developing learning materials, and assessment design. Jason Mountford - Personal Injury Financial Planning and transfering skills from Australia to the UK
“In Australia, I was an experienced Financial planner holding the equivalent of chartered status. However, when I moved to the UK that equated to 30 CII credits! I quickly realised I had to leave my ego at the door, retake my exams and adapt to the UK market.”And that’s exactly what Jason did, spending several years in a client relationship manager role, retraining and passing exams, and eventually securing a role with Irwin Mitchel as a personal injury financial planner.I’ve always enjoyed representing financial planners in the clinical negligence and personal injury space and Jason shares deeply about why this is the perfect role for him and how Andrew Nicholson of Recruit UK helped him find the perfect role. - The role of a personal injury specialist, and why this financial planning niche is so rewarding. - Similarities and differences between the UK and Australian financial planning profession. - Challenges faced when stepping into the UK Financial planning profession from abroad. - Why he has decided to set up a YouTube channel and focus on social media marketing. if you are looking to progress your career within financial planning reach out directly to Sam Oakes or take a look at www.recruitukltd.co.uk for the latest job opportunities.
