Johnny Depp and Amber Heard's divorce has been one of the most acrimonious in Hollywood history, and their recent defamation trial in the US made for compelling viewing for millions of people who were firmly on "Team Johnny". But wile the case may now be over, for many other survivors of domestic violence the fallout from the jury's verdict is only just beginning, as millions of women will now find it harder than ever to speak out against their abuser. The Quicky speaks to two domestic violence experts, and a survivor about why the true cost of this case is going to be about a lot more than $15 million dollars. The world is still reeling from a mass shooting in Texas that killed 19 children and two teachers last month, but already there have been more massacres in the United States, which is averaging more than one a day. Australia has also experienced mass shootings in the past, including most notably Port Arthur, but what has happened since then? It's been nine months since the Taliban regained full control of Afghanistan, and despite their assurances to the international community that this time around they would be more respectful of women and girls, they are once again repressing half of the population. New laws and regulations restricting the freedoms, rights and movement of all women and girls continue to be introduced, including most recently a ban on all women from showing their faces in public, including on TV. The Quicky speaks to a woman who fled Afghanistan with her family about how the country is being gradually destroyed by the Taliban, as we look into how restricted daily life has become for millions of people, and what if anything is being done to stop it. Maria Aziz operates an organisation in Western Australia called AFG Young Leaders that aims to empower Afghan-Australian youth, and recently launched a GoFundMe appeal seeking donations to help support new Afghan arrivals with mental health services, torture and trauma counselling and accommodation.
