The Birth Trauma Inquiry: Maternity's Me Too Moment

Last week an inquiry began in NSW, with tearful evidence from a woman named Naomi Bowden, who recalled the treatment she received at Wollongong Hospital after the stillbirth of her baby Bella more than a decade ago. In her written submission, she had described how she felt when police took her baby’s body from her after being forced to identify her newborn, how the baby had been placed on her chest floppy, white and unresponsive despite what had appeared to be a textbook pregnancy, how weeks later at an appointment, staff questioned her about where her baby was, overworked nurses not having the time to read through her notes. This is the first of thousands of submissions to the inquiry regarding a phenomena known as birth trauma, sometimes referred to as obstetric violence or obstetric rape, where women have had experiences during labour that have left them scarred physically, mentally and emotionally. Today, the Quicky team looks at how this inquiry hopes to change things and how the truth telling will not be easy. Subscribe to Mamamia GET IN TOUCH Feedback? We’re listening! One Year In: King Charles' Reign & The Royal Family's Future

One year ago, the world woke to the news of Queen Elizabeth's death.  In the aftermath, there was speculation about the potential repercussions. Some predicted that this could mark the beginning of the end for the British monarchy. Others said it might serve as a catalyst to establish a republic in Australia and that other Commonwealth countries might also pursue their independence.  In this episode of The Quicky, we take a look at the past 365 days with King Charles on the throne, whether his reign has had a positive or negative impact on the Royal Family and what the experts think will happen next.  Subscribe to Mamamia GET IN TOUCH Feedback? Is Stockholm Syndrome A Misogynist Myth?

50 years ago a woman was taken hostage in a bank and had her life under threat for 6 full days. When she was finally released with her fellow hostages she was acting differently to the way many thought she should.  She was angry at police for putting her life in danger during negotiations. This led to a term that remains controversial to this day...Stockholm Syndrome.  In this episode of The Quicky, we find out if Stockholm Syndrome actually exists and what happens to someone who finds themselves threatened and at the same time befriending the person who has put them in harms way.  Subscribe to Mamamia GET IN TOUCH Feedback?
